Locals demand stadium on land acquired 30 yrs ago for tourist complex

Time of India12-05-2025

Panchkula: Villagers of Kajiyana in Pinjore block Sunday put forth the demand for the construction of a sports stadium for local youth on a piece of long-unused land—acquired 30 years ago for a tourism complex.
The villagers, supported by the panchayat samiti and its chairperson Promila Sharma, have submitted a formal resolution demanding a stadium on the land. They said the facility would benefit youths from Raithan, Pinjore, Morni, and nearby rural areas who currently struggle to access expensive private sports infrastructure. The demand was raised during a public meeting led by Vijay Bansal, advocate and president of Shivalik Vikas Manch, during which residents expressed frustration over decades of govt inaction. Bansal rued that successive govts had ignored the Kalka Assembly segment, with little to no development seen in the area. He added that under the 2013 Land Acquisition Act, if acquired land remains unused for five years, it must be returned to the original owners. Bansal had even issued a legal notice to the state govt in 2013, threatening court action if the land wasn't returned or used for its intended purpose. In response to the notice, the tourism department claimed in 2015 that it had a Rs 3 crore plan under the PPP model for the tourism centre, yet no action followed. With continued delay and growing demand for youth sports infrastructure, villagers and local leaders now strongly advocate repurposing the land. tnn

Kiren Rijiju lays foundation of e-Vidhan project for paperless Delhi Assembly

New Delhi: Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju on Saturday commended the quick introduction of e-Vidhan (Paperless Assembly) system in Delhi Assembly as a major step towards transparency and efficient governance. Laying the foundation of the e-Vidhan (Paperless Assembly) in the presence of Delhi Legislative Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta, the Union Minister said: 'The laying of the foundation stone for the e-Vidhan Project at the Delhi Legislative Assembly is a commendable step towards adopting technology for legislative efficiency and transparency.' He recalled the days of President's Rule in Delhi in 2014 when he prayed for election of an efficient and dedicated government. 'Now, I can say Delhi has got an that kind of responsive government. The e-Vidhan system is being implemented within 108 days, with the sanction of Rs 9 crore,' he said. Calling a legislature the heart of a government and democracy, he said the efficiency of the Assembly is indispensable for an efficient government. 'This event marks a significant milestone in the digitisation of legislative governance,' he said. 'While several states have already implemented the e-Vidhan system successfully, it is encouraging to see Delhi joining this important national initiative. I am pleased to be part of this progressive development. I want to see the Delhi Assembly as a model assembly, and this initiative will certainly help in achieving that goal,' he said. Speaker Vijender Gupta described the initiative as a milestone aimed at making Assembly functioning more efficient, transparent, and environmentally conscious. The project, being implemented under the National e-Vidhan Application (NeVA), is expected to digitize legislative operations, reduce paper usage, and provide lawmakers with real-time digital access to legislative business. The Speaker also informed that the tripartite MoU to implement NeVA was signed on March 22 between the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, GNCTD, and the Delhi Legislative Assembly Secretariat in the presence of Minister Rijiju. Gupta further said that the Delhi Assembly has received grants of over Rs 9 crore from the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs (MoPA), out which more than Rs 1 crore has been granted in first installment. He also said that the Delhi Assembly is on track to become the first in the country to run entirely on renewable energy, with a 500-kW solar power project being installed. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta highlighted achievements of her four-month-old government and reiterated her team's efforts to start new projects almost everyday. 'We had tried our best to do something new everyday and make the best use of each day of our four-month-old government,' she said. Hailing e-Vidhan as a green effort aimed at saving trees, she praised Speaker Gupta for initiating reforms and terminating corrupt and negative practices that were prevalent in under the previous government. Deputy Speaker of the Delhi Legislative Assembly Mohan Singh Bisht, Minister of Industries, Food and Supplies and Environment, Forest and Wildlife Manjinder Singh Sirsa and Chief whip Abhay Verma were present as Guests of Honour.

State forms committee to look into demand for farm loan waiver

With local body polls set to be held within three to four months, the Maharashtra government has announced setting up of a committee to look into the demands of farm loan waiver. The move comes after former independent MLA Bachchu Kadu threatened to intensify his ongoing fast from June 16 by deciding to drop water intake. Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Saturday wrote to Kadu informing him the same. 'A high-level committee will be set up on the issue of farm loan waiver within 15 days. A decision on the farm loan waiver will be taken based on the report. And a decision on staying the loan recovery from a defaulter and providing new loan will be taken by holding a special meeting,' said the letter, which was submitted to Kadu by Industries Minister Uday Samant. Kadu has been on fast for the past seven days in Amravati district demanding farm loan waiver, scholarship for their children, monthly honorarium of Rs 6,000 for disabled persons etc. All political parties had extended support to Kadu's agitation with NCP-SP chief Sharad Pawar calling him. A state-wide roadblock agitation was planned on June 15 as Kadu had announced to give up water from Monday. Bawankule on Friday had met Kadu and dialled CM Devendra Fadnavis from the protest site. The revenue minister had said that the decision on farm loan waiver will be taken in consultation with the cabinet. The letter mentioned that a decision on budgetary provision for honorarium for Divyang people will be taken in the upcoming monsoon session of the legislature and other demands will be addressed by holding a meeting of chief minister and ministers concerned. Earlier in the day, workers of Kadu created ruckus at the programme of Deputy CM Ajit Pawar demanding farm loan waiver. Pawar informed them that a decision has been taken to form a committee on all the demands raised by Kadu. As the protesters continued sloganeering, police used force and removed them from the auditorium. Meanwhile, opposition Congress slammed the state government over the decision to announce a committee on farm loan waiver. 'Why was no committee mentioned when Mahayuti promised farm loan waiver in its campaign during Assembly elections? The government has no intent to extend the waiver but wants to merely survive the day. The Rs 2,100 promised under Ladki Bahin scheme have not yet been given. This government is misleading people,' said state Congress chief Harshavardhan Sapkal. Senior Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat questioned the need to form a committee. 'The government has lakhs of crore to construct highways but has no money for farm loan waiver. The government in the past has used this trick of forming committee to sideline the issue,' said Thorat.

Incessant rainfall cripples Mangaluru and surrounding area, coastal Karnataka on red alert

Life in Karnataka's Mangaluru came to a grinding halt on Saturday as torrential rains lashed coastal Karnataka, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for Dakshina Kannada and surrounding districts. The intense downpour, which began on Saturday afternoon, led to widespread waterlogging, severe traffic snarls, and flooding of low-lying areas. In one incident, a public transport bus stalled mid-route due to flooding. Passengers and local residents were seen wading through knee-deep water to help push the vehicle to safety. Areas such as Car Street, Lower Bendur, Padil, Kottara, and other flood-prone localities bore the brunt of the downpour. The Padil railway underpass was rendered unusable after rainwater accumulated, cutting off traffic flow. Car Street and nearby residential colonies also reported water entering homes, raising concerns about urban drainage preparedness. While IMD had been forecasting heavy rains throughout the week with limited rainfall observed until Friday, Saturday's sudden and intense spell has caught many off guard. The department has warned that the red alert will remain in place until the morning of June 16, as weather models continue to indicate the likelihood of more intense showers and thunderstorms across the coastal belt. Emergency services are on standby, and civic agencies have begun pumping out water from inundated zones. This surge in rainfall is part of a broader monsoonal pattern affecting the western coast of India, with coastal Karnataka frequently witnessing flash floods during peak monsoon activity.
