MSNBC Layoffs Target 99 Union Staffers, WGA East Claims

Yahoo25-02-2025

Amid a broad reshuffle of its programming lineup, MSNBC is initiating 'mass layoffs' of 99 employees who are members of the WGA East, the union said Tuesday.
Over the past two days, according to WGA East, 'we learned that MSNBC is starting mass layoffs of 99 of our union colleagues from at least nine different shows. This devastating news comes after the slow, painful trickle of announcements regarding a near-total overhaul of the network's broadcast lineup.'

Among other changes, Comcast-owned MSNBC is removing Joy Reid and Alex Wagner from its primetime lineup. Meanwhile, Jen Psaki, the former Biden White House press secretary who joined MSNBC in 2023, is moving into the network's 9 p.m. slot between Tuesday and Friday.
Affected staffers at the cable news outlets work on the following shows: 'The ReidOut,' 'Alex Wagner Tonight,' 'The Weekend,' 'Andrea Mitchell Reports,' 'Ayman Mohyeldin Reports,' 'Weekends With Jonathan Capehart,' 'The Katie Phang Show,' 'Jose Diaz-Balart Reports' and 'Inside With Jen Psaki.'
MSNBC reps did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the layoffs.
On MSNBC's air Monday night, longtime anchor Rachel Maddow criticized the changes and said some of the network's 'most experienced, most talented' producers are facing layoffs.
WGA East's statement said, 'Although the Company has acknowledged that there are plenty of job openings at MSNBC, it has cruelly insisted that the workers slated for layoff must reapply for their jobs to remain employed. The MSNBC Union demands the Company not lay off any of the employees it has slated to be laid off but rather reassign them as needed. In the event that any employees are not retained, we demand the Company follow the layoff provisions of the collective bargaining agreement that it entered into with the Union.'
On Sunday evening, President Trump on social media unleashed a tirade attacking MSNBC, along with Reid (whom he called a 'mentally obnoxious racist') and Comcast chairman and CEO Brian Roberts (whom he called a 'lowlife').
'This whole corrupt operation is nothing more than an illegal arm of the Democrat Party,' Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social. 'They should be forced to pay vast sums of money for the damage they've done to our Country. Fake News is an UNPARDONABLE SIN!'
Word of layoffs 'comes against the backdrop of the President of the United States making direct threats against MSNBC, among other news outlets, and at a time when it has never been more crucial to have a fully staffed newsroom to cover a democracy under attack,' WGA East said.

Trump isn't done with Musk yet, Michael Cohen says

President Trump's ex-personal attorney Michael Cohen on Saturday said that Trump isn't done with tech billionaire Elon Musk yet, after tensions between the two men became incredibly heated in a public social media spat last week. 'They're going to really go after Elon Musk like nobody has seen, ever, in this country, because they can,' Cohen told MSNBC's Ali Velshi. 'And one thing Elon doesn't understand is this political guerilla warfare that they're going to conduct against him,' he added. On Thursday, a fight between Musk and Trump over the president's 'big, beautiful bill' earlier in the week escalated rapidly on Musk's X platform and Trump's Truth Social platform. The president said the tech billionaire 'just went CRAZY!' and threatened Musk's government contracts. Musk alleged that Trump had ties to convicted sex offender and financier Jeffrey Epstein on X. The public spat followed the end of Musk's recent service in the Trump administration and an alliance with the president that appeared to start off strong. Musk endorsed Trump in July 2024 in the wake of Trump surviving an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania. Musk's administration service was marked by intense backlash from those on the left and Democrats over actions taken by Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) on the federal government. 'He doesn't care about Elon Musk,' Cohen said in his MSNBC appearance, talking about Trump. 'He used Elon Musk for what he needed. Initially it was the money, so that he didn't have to lay out any of his own, and also, more importantly, for his access with X.' The Hill has reached out to the White House and X for comment.

YouTube Makes Adjustments to Its Moderation Guidelines

YouTube quietly made changes to its moderation policies last December, ahead of President Donald Trump's second term. According to The New York Times, which reviewed internal documents, YouTube is allowing content containing political, social, and cultural issues that would have been subject to removal under previous guidelines to remain on the platform. YouTube is allowing this type of content to remain on its platform as long as it is considered to be in the public's interest. The threshold for these videos has been extended from one-quarter of a video to one-half of a video. In a statement to the Times, Nicole Bell, a spokesperson for the Google-owned platform, said, "Recognizing that the definition of 'public interest' is always evolving, we update our guidance for these exceptions to reflect the new types of discussion we see on the platform today." She added, "Our goal remains the same: to protect free expression on YouTube while mitigating egregious harm." For years, conservative circles decried the moderation techniques employed by the various social media platforms, bemoaning that the takedown of their content was agenda-driven and a form of censorship. With the transition to the Trump administration, the rigid stances employed by various platforms have been jettisoned in favor of a more loose approach. YouTube joins Meta's Instagram and Facebook and X, formerly Twitter, in relaxing their moderation guidelines. Those platforms shifted from employing fact-checkers to having community members vet the veracity of content posted on their sites.

Trump supports Tom Homan arresting Newsom over California protests

President Trump on Monday said he would support arresting California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) after Newsom dared the White House's border czar to do so amid a clash over protests in Los Angeles that center on immigration. Upon returning from Camp David to the White House on Monday, Trump was asked if his border czar Tom Homan should arrest Newsom in the wake of suggestions to do so over the weekend as protests erupted over immigration raids. 'I would do it if I were Tom,' Trump responded. 'I think it's great. Gavin likes the publicity, but I think it would be a great thing,' Trump said. 'Look, I like Gavin Newsom. He's a nice guy. But he's grossly incompetent.' Newsom responded swiftly on social media, calling the threat an 'unmistakable step toward authoritarianism.' 'The President of the United States just called for the arrest of a sitting Governor. This is a day I hoped I would never see in America,' Newsom posted on X. 'I don't care if you're a Democrat or a Republican this is a line we cannot cross as a nation — this is an unmistakable step toward authoritarianism.' The Trump administration has sparred with Newsom and other California officials over the response to demonstrations in Los Angeles in response to immigration raids there. Protests have intensified in recent days, devolving at times into violence. White House officials have highlighted images of burning vehicles and clashes with law enforcement to make the case that the situation had gotten out of control. Newsom announced the state would sue the Trump administration for deploying the National Guard without his approval. The governor and other Democrats have argued the decision by the White House inflamed an already tense situation that local law enforcement was handling. Trump and Homan have warned that state and local officials could be arrested if they are violating the law. 'Come after me, arrest me. Let's just get it over with, tough guy, you know? I don't give a damn. But I care about my community. I care about this community,' Newsom told MSNBC on Sunday. Trump and Newsom have also been at odds over the White House's decision to deploy the National Guard to Los Angeles to quell protests, against the wishes of the governor and local officials. The people that are causing the problem are professional agitators. They're insurrectionists. They're bad people. They should be in jail,' Trump told reporters on Monday. He did not respond to a shouted question about whether he would invoke the Insurrection Act. Updated at 1:22 p.m. EDT Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
