Ghulam Nabi Azad confident of Centre restoring statehood to J&K

The Hindua day ago
Democratic Progressive Azad Party chairperson Ghulam Nabi Azad on Thursday (July 24, 2025) expressed his firm belief that statehood would be restored in Jammu and Kashmir and said that the sooner it is done, the better it would be.
He asserted that statehood is an absolute necessity for the development and progress of the region.
Azad also played down speculation about him being nominated for the Vice-President's post and asked the media and people to stop resorting to such rumours.
"I am thankful to the Prime Minister and the Home Minister for promising that statehood will be restored in Jammu and Kashmir. I firmly believe that they will return the statehood. But the sooner it is done, the better it will be," Mr. Azad told reporters during a visit to Jammu's Reasi district.
Responding to a question, Azad said, "For the development, progress and the overall betterment of the region, statehood is absolutely necessary. This is not a matter of Hindu or Muslim, or of Kashmir or Jammu; it concerns every party, religion, and community. Statehood is essential for all political parties, whether the BJP, National Conference or PDP." He said the statehood restoration should happen at the earliest. "When I was a minister, I had recommended the conversion of three Union Territories into states, and all the three were granted statehood. But, for the first time, I saw my own state being turned into a Union Territory. That was an unfortunate event."
Replying to another query, he said that Article 370 and statehood are two different things. "Our immediate demand is for the restoration of statehood. I have already spoken extensively in Parliament about Article 370. You and the entire media have heard it." He reiterated his earlier statement that statehood can be reinstated only if Prime Minister Narendra Modi brings a bill in Parliament or the Supreme Court reviews the matter and gives a verdict.
On speculation of him being elevated to the post of Vice-President, Azad said that these are all just assumptions. "Look, there are several good things that are unique to Jammu and Kashmir, which is why it is called the Paradise on Earth. But there are also a lot of rumours being peddled here. I request people and the media — please stop spreading them."
Mr. Azad pointed out that there are important works to be done in Jammu and Kashmir. "It needs to have its statehood back, development works should be carried out, unemployment needs to be eliminated. Finding solutions to these issues should be the priority," he said.
He suggested that the media and people focus on constructive things so that Jammu and Kashmir can progress. "Who even has the time to keep spreading rumours? Here, one day someone is made something, and the next day it is someone else. This goes on," he said.

Cong, BJP allege conspiracy, security lapse

Kochi/Thrissur: Alleging a conspiracy behind the jailbreak of rape-and-murder case convict Govindachamy, opposition leader V D Satheeshan on Friday said the criminal received assistance from inside and outside Kannur Central Prison. Satheeshan said it was unbelievable that a person with one hand could cut through the jail cell window bars, climb out and escape over such a high wall using a cloth. Such an incident hasn't been seen even in Tarzan movies, he said. He said the jailbreak incident was an embarrassment for state govt. "Jail authorities came to know of Govindachamy's escape only at 5am and police were informed by 7am. It was the vigilance of ordinary people that led to the fugitive's capture," he said. "Opposition repeatedly highlighted security lapses in Kannur central jail. Criminals, including those accused in the TP murder case, are being provided with all kinds of assistance by govt and jail authorities there. The accused in TP case are given parole and food of their choice. These prisoners themselves decide the jail menu. Alcohol and drugs are readily available there. Additionally, these inmates run drug trafficking and gang operations from within the jail. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 15 Amazing Hotel Swimming Pools Learn More Undo They use the latest phones. Kannur central jail has become a haven for criminals," he alleged. BJP demands judicial probe Meanwhile, BJP state general secretary M T Ramesh alleged that a powerful mafia, with links to ruling CPM, was controlling the affairs of Kannur central jail and Govindachamy was able to escape from that high-security prison with the mafia's help. He demanded a judicial probe into the operations of mafias in state jails and into the circumstances that led to Govindachamy's jailbreak. "It is clear that Govindachamy received help from within the jail and outside. The incident is a clear manifestation of the failure of jail department controlled by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan," he said.

Telangana led way in caste census, BJP trying to derail BC empowerment: Ponnam Prabhakar

New Delhi/Hyderabad, July 25 (UNI) Telangana Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar on Friday said the Congress government in Telangana has taken decisive steps to implement a caste census despite not being in power at the Centre, and condemned BJP leaders for attempting to undermine the process. Speaking to the media at Telangana Bhavan in New Delhi after a meeting with AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi, Prabhakar said Rahul Gandhi had emphasised the need for a caste census during the Bharat Jodo Yatra and promised to implement it if voted to power. Telangana, he said, took the lead by initiating the caste census on February 4, 2024. Despite delays due to the Lok Sabha elections, the state government successfully completed the enumeration with 3.5 crore people voluntarily participating. The collected data, comprising over 80 crore documents, was digitised, reviewed by a subcommittee, and approved by the state cabinet. The resulting legislation to implement 42 per cent reservation for BCs in education and local bodies was passed and sent to the Governor, and later to the President for approval on April 30, 2025. Prabhakar slammed Union Minister G Kishan Reddy and BJP leaders for opposing the bill and accused them of betraying the Backward Classes. 'What has BJP done more than us for BCs? Instead of supporting this historic move, they are trying to spread misinformation and dilute our efforts,' he said, citing BJP's past opposition to the Mandal Commission and social justice policies. He also questioned why BJP, while claiming to support BCs, failed to appoint a BC as the Leader of the Opposition in Telangana or maintain BC leadership in their own party. 'Our Congress party stands as the brand ambassador of social justice. We are not blaming any party, but facts must be examined,' he said. He urged BJP leaders to stop creating divisions and instead support the caste census and reservations for BCs. 'This is not just about Telangana, but a nationwide movement to ensure social justice,' he said, reiterating the Congress' commitment to fight for the rights of weaker sections. Ministers Konda Surekha and Vakiti Srihari were also present during the interaction. UNI VV ARN

No funds from muzrai temples diverted: DGR

Mangaluru: Minister for health and family welfare, Dinesh Gundu Rao, expressed concern over the spread of false information accusing the govt of diverting revenue from endowment temples for other purposes. Stating that the govt utilises the revenue from muzrai temples exclusively for the development of religious shrines under the department, the minister said that a few organisations have been spreading malicious campaigns against the govt with a political agenda. Rao was speaking at a consultation meeting with the management committee members of temples under the Hindu religious institutions and charitable endowments department on Friday. The Congress govt under chief minister Siddaramaiah increased 'tasdik' (remuneration for archaks) from Rs 24,000 to Rs 36,000 per year, and later to Rs 48,000 during his previous term. "The govt has further increased the tasdik to Rs 72,000. There is a political conspiracy to portray the Congress govt as anti-Hindu," Rao alleged. The state govt passed the Karnataka Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowments (Amendment) Bill to make provisions to utilise a portion of revenue from rich temples for the development of Hindu shrines with lower income. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "While the BJP opposed the bill, the governor has referred it to the President of India for approval," he said, and called upon endowment temple management committees to submit a memorandum to the governor and the President, seeking approval for the bill. MLC Manjunath Bhandary said that to prevent this malicious campaign, all endowment temples should put up notice boards clarifying that 'no funds from Hindu temples are diverted for other purposes.' He demanded that members of all B and C Grade endowment temples should be given ID cards from the department. Shwetha Palli, executive officer of Bappanadu Durgaparameshwari Temple, noted that 493 temples in Dakshina Kannada come under the muzrai department, of which 10 generate the highest income. MLC Ivan D'Souza, deputy commissioner Darshan HV and zilla panchayat CEO Narwade Vinayak Karbhari were present.
