Time Out6 days ago

Becoming a student is just about as exhilarating as it is nerve-wracking, but one of the coolest opportunities you could be offered is the chance to study abroad – head overseas for a year to an international university, immerse yourself in a new culture and expand your life skills as well as your academic knowledge.
But, it can be expensive, depending on where you opt to go. That's why this new report from Remitly is so handy. The money transfer platform has conducted analysis into tuition fees, the price of a visa, how much rent is and the cost of living, and now, we've got a comprehensive ranking of the world's spenniest and cheapest cities to study abroad.
So, which city topped the list as the most expensive? That would be New York (no surprises there). The Big Apple scored a perfect 100 on the education expenses index, all supplemented by eye-watering rent costs (an average one-bed apartment will set you back $5,101.73 per month), high tuition fees (around $30,748 per year) and steep daily living costs of $35.22.
Not to mention it's also recently topped the Global Cities Index, as well as lists of the planet's priciest and wealthiest hubs.
Way down at the other end of the scale is Cairo, the Egyptian capital, which scored a mere 8.03 on the education expenses index. Here, you'll pay nothing for your visa, will fork out a little over $2,000 in tuition fees and not even spend $10 a day on living costs. Talk about contrast, eh?

'I ordered fish and chips abroad and the price left me gobsmacked'

'I ordered fish and chips abroad and the price left me gobsmacked' Suzanna, who is a travel vlogger, shared the meal online and couldn't believe the cost of it. She simply had to tell everyone about it as the price left her totally stunned She was left stunned by the price of the meal (stock image) (Image: undefined via Getty Images ) During her holiday, a woman was left astounded by the price tag on her fish and chips order. Suzanna, known for her travel vlogs, shared her astonishment online over the cost of her meal. The TikTok user, who posts under suzannatravelsolo, relished the dish at her "favourite" dining establishment while vacationing in Egypt, setting the mood with a bottle of Prosecco in her hotel room before heading out. She took her followers along to a cherished eatery in Luxor known as The Lantern Room Restaurant. Accompanied by a friend, Suzanna went to what she considers the best English restaurant in the vicinity. She pointed out that it's tucked away on a side street in Luxor, a venue she frequents during her travels. The video tour included a look at the menu where starters are priced around £2 each, with Suzanna confessing her preference for the garlic mushrooms. ‌ Main courses at the restaurant feature a variety of classic options, but Suzanna chose the traditional fish, chips and mushy peas. She described the meal as nothing short of "beautiful." ‌ To top off her dining experience, Suzanna enjoyed a cup of tea, and the total bill amounted to £8 per person. She coined it remarkable "unbelievable value for money." In response, a social media user expressed their envy, commenting: "Aw, this would be my dream. I adore Egypt after my first visit. Loving your content." One enthusiastic traveller wrote: "What a lovely life you have Suzanna - just tracking the world and having a great time. Love your content. Have a lovely time in Luxor and on the cruise." ‌ A different user commented, expressing their amazement at the affordability: "Looks yummy, so cheap." Garnering an impressive average rating of 4.7 out of 5, diners frequently applaud the establishment for various aspects. One diner complimented the venue, sharing: "Great atmosphere and decor - friendly welcome, good choice of international and Egyptian cuisine. All cooked in their restaurant to a high standard - highly recommend this resturant." ‌ Another shared their delightful dining experience, elaborating: "Small restaurant, very friendly. Very friendly staff. And above all we eat very well... the Shish Tawook is excellent, as well as the lentil soup. The other dishes are just as tasty. All for a very reasonable price." A third individual enthused: "This is a great little restaurant offering European and Egyptian food. They also do a good British Sunday roast, highly recommended, but best to book. "I recommended it to guests staying at my hotel, and they were so impressed they went back three times during their stay - says it all really." My family and I have been coming here over 20 years. "Tonight I had fish and chips - a small portion, which was amazing. Just right to then have apple crumble and ice cream. Again the food is top notch. "The place and staff couldn't be nicer. The prices are very good. For sure the best place in Luxor. Cannot wait to come back again."

The best cities in the world revealed - and seven UK cities make the list... is YOUR hometown on it?

A new ranking of the world's best cities has been released and there are seven UK cities in the top 100. The Oxford Economics Global Cities Index ranks 1,000 cities based on their economy, quality of life, environment, human capital and governance. In 2025's list, New York takes the crown and is described as the 'economic capital of the United States' and 'in many ways, the world'. Second on the podium? London. The report says: 'London may fit the definition of a "Global City" more than anywhere else in the world. 'The city has established itself as a perpetually relevant locale for business, science and technology, education and the arts.' While the Big Smoke's economy helped it rise up the ranking, London 'really stands out' as the 'world's leading city for human capital', due to its 'numerous world leading universities, diverse labour force and large pool of international headquarters'. The report adds: 'London has weathered the UK's past stumbles related to Brexit and the turmoil of the Prime Minister's office quite well. Fears that Brexit would lead to a decline of the city as a global financial centre have not been realised.' Although London scores highly in the ranking, its high housing expenditure, low economic diversity and low income equality are noted as weaknesses. But London isn't the only British city to earn a place in the top 100. Edinburgh lands just outside the top 50 in 57th place. The Scottish metropolis is listed as a key example of a 'cultural capital'. Cultural capitals have a 'high quality of life' with many 'cultural sites' and a 'sizeable share of foreign-born residents'. Bristol is the second-highest performing English city and ranks at 68th place. The city picks up high scores for economy and quality of life. Leeds ranks in 83rd place and is listed as a sustainable city. Sustainable cities are considered to have 'prioritised sustainable growth' and are 'focused on the clean energy transition'. Cambridge, another city considered to be a 'cultural capital', ranks in 86th place on the list. It gets its highest scores for its economy and quality of life. Glasgow just makes the top 100, ranking at 90th on the index. It scores particularly highly for quality of life. BEST CITIES IN THE WORLD 1. New York, USA 2. London, UK 3. Paris, France 4. San Jose, the home of 'most major technology companies' including Apple, Meta and Alphabet, takes fourth place on the list. The report states that the Californian city 'attracts some of the brightest minds around the globe'. Seattle rounds off the top five due to its status as a 'major tech sector' and its high income per person.
