FITUR strengthens its contribution to the competitiveness and sustainability of the tourism industry with the Knowledge Hub.
MADRID – FITUR, the International Tourism Fair, convenes the global tourism market from January 21 to 25, 2026 at IFEMA MADRID, in a context of growth that enables the definition of the foundations of a tourism sector that generates wealth and employment within a sustainable framework.
In this context, FITUR 2026 announces the creation of the Knowledge Hub, which strengthens its leadership with the addition of Hall 12 at the Madrid venue as the epicenter of debate and innovation in tourism. During the professional days – Wednesday 21, Thursday 22, and Friday 23 – experts from around the world will gather in hundreds of sessions to present proposals, share experiences, and disseminate best practices that are setting trends in the tourism industry. In addition, the dissemination of knowledge and technology available to companies and professionals in the sector will be promoted.
The Knowledge Hub, which concentrates the Fair's innovation and technology content, will have direct access from IFEMA MADRID's South Entrance and will be interconnected with the rest of the pavilions through Hall 4, in a layout that allows the expansion of the fair and optimizes visitor flows.
The Knowledge Hub, which will bring together highly current and relevant content, will host the sections FITUR TechY, FITUR Know-How & Export, FITUR Sports, the FITURNEXT Observatory, and the Travel Technology area, as well as new specialized content aligned with the industry's challenges, enhancing the conference offerings of the International Tourism Fair.
FITUR 2026 continues to grow in service of driving the tourism industry forward
The 46th edition of FITUR will occupy a total of nine halls — 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 12 — where the most pioneering global offering from across the entire tourism value chain will be presented. It will bring together public and private institutions linked to destinations, accommodation, agencies and tour operators, technology companies, transportation providers, and other sector services, as well as the latest innovations, trends, and research that are defining the direction of an industry which, according to UN Tourism forecasts, is expected to grow between 3% and 5% in international arrivals in 2025 with an estimated spending of 2.1 trillion dollars.
Hall 3 will bring together proposals from the Americas; Hall 4 will group together Europe and FITUR Cruises; Hall 5, 7, and 9 will house Spain, along with FITUR LGBT+ in Hall 9; Hall 6 will feature the Middle East and Africa; Hall 8, Asia-Pacific and Global Companies; Hall 10, Global Companies along with FITUR 4all, FITUR Lingua, FITUR Screen, and FITUR Woman; and the Knowledge Hub, Hall 12, will include FITUR TechY, FITUR Know-How & Export, FITUR Sports, the FITURNEXT Observatory, and the Travel Technology area.
María Valcarce, Director of FITUR, emphasized that 'after a 2025 edition in which the Fair exceeded expectations with record figures, in 2026, with Mexico as Partner Country, we are taking a new step that will reinforce FITUR's global leadership; its relevance in activating the global tourism market; and its role in promoting knowledge and innovation oriented toward a renewed and sustainable tourism model.'
FITUR 2026 will be held from January 21 to 25 at IFEMA MADRID.

limehome strengthens its market presence by adding several hotel assets across Europe. Multiple hotel properties in A-cities, including Berlin, Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia, completed or nearly completed. MUNICH – limehome, Europe's leading operator of design accommodations, is stepping up its focus on conversions of vacant and struggling hotels. The company has signed four additional projects in Italy, Spain and Germany, which will bring around 200 new units to market over the next year. These will be added to the expanding portfolio of completed or nearly completed hotel properties in A-tier cities. The next limehome opening of a former hotel is scheduled for fall 2025, with the launch of a newly converted property in Berlin. Increasing portfolio share of hotel projects In 2024, limehome took over the former Gold Hotel in Berlin-Friedrichshain as the sole tenant. A total of 42 new units will be available from the fall. This is already the second hotel conversion in the capital, following the property on Stresemannstraße that opened its doors in 2023. The above-average occupancy rate of 93 percent proves the success of the Berlin limehome property. Following this showcase, limehome will revitalize two adjacent three-star hotels in the southern Italian port city of Bari at Via Piccinni and Via Roberto da Bari with its partners. Just 400 metres apart and steps from the historic centre, both properties will reopen by mid-2026. On Spain's Costa Blanca, limehome will relaunch the former beachside Hotel Centro Mar on Benidorm's Calle Major by October 2025. Back in Germany, the company is converting a former Ibis hotel in central Jena, Thuringia, into functional design accommodations that will welcome guests in summer 2025. These projects are the latest additions to limehome's growing list of hotel conversions across major European cities, including Barcelona, Basel, Berlin and Prague. Lease renewals and rising costs prompt landlords to seek alternatives limehome's increasing focus on hotel takeovers addresses the growing cost facing hospitality operators face due to rising rents and labour costs. limehome's co-founder and co-CEO, Dr. Josef Vollmayr, offers the following insights: 'A significant portion of the estimated seven to eight million hotel rooms in Europe is outdated. At the same time, operating costs have increased by approximately 40 percent. As rental agreements expire – which will be the case for many properties in the coming years – the pressure on tenants is enormous. In this scenario, improving efficiency and modernizing existing properties is crucial to ensure the economic viability of these assets.' Converting existing buildings rather than building new properties offers a faster, more resource-efficient solution if the future tenant can maximise space and lower operational outlay. limehome's tech driven operating model allows for flexible floor plans and high space efficiency. The company's in-house team of architects, engineers and data scientists increase the net lettable area to around 70 percent, compared to around 50 percent in conventional hotel concepts. 'Our tech-enabled concept combined with deep conversion expertise provides a needed solution for underperforming hotel assets,' says Vollmayr. 'Hotel conversions already represent up to 15 percent of our portfolio and the trend is rising. Due to the increasing cost pressure faced by operators from the mid- to upscale segment, we expect a significant rise in conversion projects within our portfolio over the next few years. The same applies for hotel takeovers.' Diversified hotel projects for maximum coverage In addition to new hotel conversions, with which limehome takes over struggling hotel operators and thus enriches the accommodation market, the Munich-based company is also working on new hotel construction projects. Almost 400 new units are being built in the Spanish tourist centers of Madrid and Barcelona, as well as in Burgos, which is a popular stop on the Way of St. James and is equally interesting for short breaks. Since 2022, limehome has already been successfully managing a hotel accommodation with over 30 units in the Spanish metropolis of Barcelona. Through the mix of conversions and new construction projects, limehome is expanding its own portfolio across the board and demonstrating once again that the hospitality provider's digital concept can be used flexibly and successfully as a solution for the hotel market of tomorrow.

In a historic decision, Shaikha Al Nowais of the United Arab Emirates secured the council's nomination as the next Secretary-General, marking the first time a woman will hold the top position in the agency's 50-year history. Al Nowais, a corporate vice president at Rotana Hotels in Abu Dhabi, emerged as the frontrunner early in the voting process, clinching 16 votes in the first round and ultimately securing a projected 24 votes in the second round — well above the minimum 18 required. Her closest competitor, Greece's Harry Theoharis, who played a key role in Greece's tourism recovery during the COVID-19 crisis, received 11 votes. The selection now awaits formal approval by the United Nations General Assembly before Al Nowais takes office in January 2026. Gloria Guevara's gracious exit Among the five other candidates vying for the post, Mexico's Gloria Guevara, one of the most recognized voices in global tourism, was considered a strong contender but was eliminated in the first round after receiving eight votes. Guevara, who has more than 35 years of experience and served as Mexico's Minister of Tourism, offered a gracious concession and public congratulations to her opponent: 'Following today's vote of UN Tourism in Spain, I would like to thank President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo and the Government of Mexico for their unwavering support throughout my campaign. Africa's ambitions and lessons learned Ghana's Muhammed Adam, the African Union's officially endorsed candidate, received just two votes and was also eliminated in the first round. His defeat raised important questions about the coherence and effectiveness of African diplomatic coordination in multilateral tourism leadership contests. Despite the setback, Adam's campaign brought attention to critical issues such as strengthening the voice of developing countries and securing greater technical and financial support for underrepresented regions. WTTC: Spain 's tourism sector could exceed 260bn euros by 2025

In 2024, the sector in Spain achieved its best result since 2019, with a contribution of almost 249bn. euros to GDP International tourism spending grew by nearly 11% year-on-year MADRID, SPAIN – The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) forecasts that by 2025 the travel and tourism sector in Spain could reach a new all-time high, with an estimated contribution of 260.5 billion euros to GDP, equivalent to almost 16% of the national economy. According to the latest Economic Impact Research (EIR), prepared by WTTC in collaboration with Oxford Economics, these forecasts reinforce the role of tourism as one of the country's main economic drivers, with an estimated year-on-year increase of 4.7%. WTTC projects that by the end of 2025 the sector will account for 3.2 million jobs in Spain, equivalent to 14.4% of total employment. By 2025, spending by international tourists is expected to reach 113.2 billion euros, with a year-on-year growth of 5.7%, while domestic spending could reach 84.9 billion euros, 2.4% more than the previous year. Julia Simpson, President and CEO of WTTC, said: 'Spain remains a true global tourism powerhouse. The data reflects a dynamic, resilient and constantly evolving sector, which not only drives economic growth, but also creates quality jobs and promotes regional development. The forecasts for 2025 are very positive, and with a firm commitment to sustainability and innovation, Spain is well positioned to lead the future of global tourism, even in a challenging international environment.' A look back to 2024 During 2024, the Spanish tourism sector experienced its best year since 2019. Its contribution to GDP rose by almost 8% to €248.7 billion, or 15.6% of the economy. It also employed 3 million people, nearly 14% of the country's total jobs. Spending by international tourists was 107.1 billion euros (up 10.9% year-on-year), while domestic spending reached 82.9 billion, up 2.2% on 2023. These segments accounted for 56.4% and 43.6% of total expenditure, respectively. Leisure travel accounted for 88.3% of total expenditure, compared to 11.7% for business travel expenditure. The main source countries for arrivals into Spain in 2024 were the United Kingdom (20%), France (14%) and Germany (13%). The destinations most visited by Spaniards were France (25%), Italy (14%), the United Kingdom (8%) and Portugal (8%). The next decade Looking ahead to 2035, the WTTC projects that the tourism sector could contribute €315.7 billion to the GDP, which would represent more than 17% of the Spanish economy, as well as 4 million jobs, 700,000 more than at present. Regional data: European Union In 2024, the EU travel and tourism sector contributed almost 1.8 trillion euros to the region's GDP, or more than 10% of its economy. This figure exceeded 2019 levels by almost 6%. Employment associated with the sector grew by 4.7%, year-on-year, to 24.6 million jobs, accounting for one in nine jobs across the region. Domestic travel spending in the EU reached 1 trillion euros, while spending by international visitors reached 515 billion euros. By 2025, WTTC forecasts that the regional sector will reach almost 1.9 trillion euros, representing 10.5% of the EU economy. Employment linked to the sector is estimated to total 25.7 million people, or 12% of the regional total. In addition, the agency expects international spending to grow by more than 11% to 573 billion euros, and domestic spending to increase by 1.6% to more than 1.1 trillion euros.
