The final day of the Rapid section at the Grand Chess Tour event in Saint Louis saw D Gukesh climb from sixth to fourth position, as he managed to end it on a positive note. On Wednesday, in the final three rounds, Gukesh faced three Americans and began with a defeat to Leinier Dominguez. Then he staged a comeback, beating Wesley So and also the leader, Fabiano Caruana. The reigning World Champion now has 10 points, and trails Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (11 points), Levon Aronian (13 points) and Caruana (14).
Meanwhile, Dominguez, So, and Uzbekistan's Nodirbek Abdusattorov have nine points and share the fifth position. They are two points ahead of Vietnam's Liem Le Quang. American GM Sam Shankland is ninth with five points, and Grigoriy Oparin is last with three.
Gukesh's win against Caruana also saw the American GM fall to his only defeat in the event so far. Caruana had the advantage early in their final round face-off, but Gukesh managed to find a way out and also got his fourth win in a row over his opponent.
'Today could have been horrible…': D Gukesh
The opening two days at St. Louis was disappointing for Gukesh, as he had two defeats, two draws, managing two wins too. 'Today could have been horrible, but turned out to be good,' Gukesh said, after beating Caruana.
'For a long time in the game, it was just about surviving,' he added.
Commenting on Caruana's early advantage, he remarked, 'Once I allowed f4 it was just… I quickly realised it was just too bad.'
Speaking about his game, he said, 'I was quite happy to get my rook there because I was just afraid I would not get any piece above the fourth rank. And then I got my rook to the sixth rank. That was a success.'
The Indian GM will look to continue his momentum into the Blitz section, a format where he will want to put in a strong performance. 'It'll be a great challenge because Zagreb Rapid and Blitz didn't go well. So here it'll be a chance for me to prove myself,' he said.

Jasprit Bumrah informs selectors he is available to play in the Asia Cup

India's star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has made himself available to play the forthcoming Asia Cup in Dubai, a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) source said. The Indian Express understands that Bumrah had spoken to the selectors a few days ago and informed them about his readiness to play. The senior selection committee headed by former all-rounder Ajit Agarkar is expected to meet on August 19 in Mumbai to pick a 15-member squad for forthcoming Asia Cup, which is scheduled to be played from September 9 to 28 in UAE in the T20 format. 'Bumrah has informed the selectors that he will be available for Asia Cup selection. The selection committee will meet and discuss it when they meet next week,' the source said. Bumrah was released from the Test squad for the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at the Oval keeping in mind his workload. Bumrah had played in the first Test at Headingley, skipped the second Test at Edgbaston, which India won, and played in the third and fourth Tests at Lord's and Old Trafford. During the Test series, he had two-five wicket hauls and bowled 119.4 overs. With Asia Cup to be played in T20I format, Bumrah won't have to bowl longer spells and the team management can even pick and choose his games. Bumrah will get a gap of nearly 40 days between the last Test he played in England and the start of the Asia Cup. Bumrah's last T20I appearance was in the 2024 T20 World Cup final against South Africa in Bridgetown that India won by seven runs. He took 2 for 18. The Indian team will be travelling early to UAE for the Asia Cup. Most of the players will be going to the Asia Cup without any match practice game. The BCCI had asked team management whether they were in favour of a short camp in Bengaluru. However, the team management felt that it would be better to fly early so that players can get used to the conditions. 'Instead of having a camp here, the team will fly three-four days early so that they can get decent practice before the tournament starts,' the source said.

Chennai GM here to stay, organisers may expand event to other centres

CHENNAI: The Chennai Grand Masters event is here to stay. Those were the words of Srinath Narayanan, the GM-turned tournament director, who willed the inaugural edition out of thin air in 2023. After two more editions, in 2024 and 2025, Narayanan is a relieved man as he has put the building blocks in place for India's biggest super tournament to become a permanent place in the calendar. On Friday, Narayanan and Sreekar Channapragada, the co-founder of MGD1, the competition's organisers, fielded a few questions from select media on a number of issues pertaining to the tournament's future and player feedback from this year. Excerpts: On how the tournament went Srinath: We are pretty happy and pleased, and felt everything went smoothly despite last-minute challenges (one of the players withdrew with days remaining and the tournament opener was pushed back by a day after a fire broke out). From the perspective of the fans, there was an overwhelming positive feedback. I heard so many people say how much they enjoyed it and how much they would like to be back. The fans get access to players for selfies and getting autographs... I know it happens in other tournaments as well. These things worked out well. On the prospect of exhibition matches during the tournament Sreekar: There's always an interest from brands, about wanting to see Vishy (Viswanathan Anand) playing a game. Actually, there were more ticket sales when he was here than for today (final day). The prospect of an exhibition is always on the cards but it depends on other factors as well. Maybe it can be staged at the very start of an event. On staging a Rapid and Blitz section before Classical like what happens at St. Louis Sreekar: Definitely. I think all the CEOs and companies coming in over the last week, they have kind of figured out what we are trying to pitch. That is what drives what viewership (Blitz and Rapid). We may also have an event in, say, an Hyderabad or a Bengaluru or Mumbai. On the event in Chennai staying Srinath: No, the Chennai event is here to stay. If it had to be moved, it would have already shifted. The fact that we are here shows that it's here to stay. Sreekar: I think this window is a better window for us. In November and December, other things may happen. It's usually when the World Championship happens, there may be some rain in Chennai. I think this slot works best for us. On approaching this event without government funding Sreekar: So irrespective of an event being held with government funding or not, the main focus is on promotion of the sport. Under a private sponsor, they are also interested in promoting the brand. But they leave the dynamic of promoting the sport to us. They expect certain deliverables and those deliverables are crystal clear. With the government, it's about the sport but sometimes the lines can be blurry and deliverables may not be clear. But we are grateful that the government continues to support this event. On money streams available to organisers Sreekar: For organisers in chess, maybe someday the broadcasting rights like what happens in cricket (smiles). In chess, the title sponsorship is the main thing. The reason we had ticketing is for the purposes of filtering, we wanted to have serious chess fans. With respect to the price points — Rs 250, Rs 750 and Rs 3500 — we were experimenting a touch to know what they (fans) value the most. Would it be just access to the commentary hall, access to the playing hall once or access to the playing hall multiple times. In terms of revenue, ticketing and merchandising combined I don't think contributes more than 2%. So, yeah, we were experimenting a bit. Most of the revenue is from title sponsorship. On keeping the Challengers section an all Indian competition Srinath: It's definitely by design. And even then, there are lots of others, deserving players, who don't get the chance. Like, for example, (M) Pranesh won the tournament and he qualified from winning the online competition. There are so many such deserving talents. I would like to continue this aspect of the tournament this way.

Big Boost For India! Suyakumar Yadav Clears Crucial Test Before Asia Cup Selection

Last Updated: India T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav cleared a fitness test at BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, ahead of the 2025 Asia Cup selection meeting on August 19 in Mumbai. India T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav has reportedly cleared a fitness test at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, crucially in time for the board's selection meeting regarding the 2025 Asia Cup in September. Suryakumar underwent surgery for a lower abdomen hernia in Germany in June. The selection committee will convene in Mumbai on August 19 to discuss and announce the squad for the T20 multi-nation tournament. Suryakumar is expected to be present alongside chief selector Ajit Agarkar, with many pivotal calls set to be taken for India's T20I future. 'He has cleared his fitness and will be available to captain the Indian team during the Asia Cup," The Indian Express quoted a BCCI source as saying. 'He was at the COE till a few days ago, where he underwent a rehab programme and has now been declared fit. He will be attending the Indian team selection meeting." The 34-year-old has recently been rocked by injuries. He went under the knife for a similar sports hernia injury last year, too. The year before that, he underwent surgery for an ankle issue. This time, he was said to have consulted a doctor in the United Kingdom after IPL 2025. India will hope that the recurrent injuries don't hamper his preparations for a crucial patch of T20I cricket. India's Asia Cup campaign begins on September 10 against the UAE. Suryakumar is the sixth-ranked T20I batter in the ICC rankings but is widely considered one of the best in Indian history, and thus crucial to the team's hopes of defending the title. Will Suryakumar pick his successor? Although Suryakumar has a goos few years of cricket ahead of him, a lot of the talk ahead of the Asia Cup team selection has surrounded around who'd be his successor. Axar Patel is the current vice-captain, and he's 31, but Shubman Gill's success with the Test team has shaken things up, if reports are to be believed. Some believe that this is the right time to appoint Gill as the T20I vice-captain, like in ODIs, to prepare him for eventually taking over from Suryakumar. However, he's a top-order player, and the current top-three of India — Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Tilak Varma — have been in good form and enjoy the team's backing. The team's selection will not only decide India's Asia Cup future but also view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive.
