Why a New York Rangers forward spends his summers in a Connecticut basement

When 22-year-old Brett Berard makes his way downstairs every evening, it's not because he's avoiding the world. The New York Rangers forward is spending his NHL off-season living with the Fiorita family—an unabashedly Rangers-obsessed family that has unofficially claimed him as one of their own.

Brett Berard, signed in 2020, is in the final year of his three-year entry-level agreement. Although his NHL salary will increase shortly, his present two-way contract pays him $80,000 when he skates for the New York Rangers' AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack—a far cry from the multimillion-dollar deals fans envision.
That's how Rhode Island-born Brett Berard found himself in suburban Connecticut. During summer training with strength coach Ben Prentiss in Stamford, Brett Berard spoke of his intentions to a friend he had grown up with, who just so happened to know the Fioritas.
In a matter of days, the situation was arranged.
For the Fioritas, whose four kids were raised on Rangers hockey, it was a no-brainer "yes." Missy Fiorita remembers, 'Anyone that could would do this,' Brett Berard says. 'I live all year by myself, so it's kind of a second family away from my family.'
Life with the Fioritas
Berard fit easily into everyday life. Mornings begin with eggs—sometimes five eggs at once—followed by gym sessions and skating drills.
Afternoons can include pool workouts or golf games with Matthew Fiorita, the family club champion. Evenings are for TV viewing, movies, driveway basketball, or competitive Rummikub until Missy instructs him to get some rest.
He makes use of the main floor bathroom, showers upstairs as the rest of the household does, and sometimes takes over a sibling's bedroom when weary of hotel life for the season.
The basement setup benefits all parties—Berard avoids rent, and the Fioritas enjoy a front-row view of his NHL adventure. But it's not without surprises, such as the evening last summer when Berard returned home cradling his jaw following a skate. His teeth had been displaced by an injury, and by dawn Missy was taking him to an oral surgeon in White Plains.

A second family away from home
Berard appeared in 35 games with the Rangers last season, and when the offseason concludes in mid-September, he'll go back to Hartford or New York. But for now, the basement in Darien is his summer home.

Kroy Biermann reveals disturbing custody details and warns Kim Zolciak home is hurting their children's mental health

Kroy Biermann reveals disturbing custody details and warns Kim Zolciak home is hurting their children's mental health (Image via Getty) Kroy Biermann has asked a Georgia court to make his home the main residence for the four children he shares with reality star Kim Zolciak. The former NFL player claims that the current shared custody arrangement is harming the kids' mental health. Under the existing plan, each parent takes care of two children at a time, with the older sons and younger twins switching homes weekly. Kroy Biermann argues that this split setup is not good for the children and wants full custody to provide stability and proper guidance. Kroy Biermann details concerns over Kim Zolciak's parenting and household environment According to court documents filed by Kroy Biermann's legal team, there is a 'noteworthy absence of structure and accountability' in Kim Zolciak's home. Biermann claims that his children often lack parental supervision when at their mother's house. Biermann accuses Kim of leaving the kids home alone or with other people for long periods of time. Biermann thinks this doesn't allow it to have consistent training for the children, that are a must for their emotional and mental health. The ex-NFL player stresses how one home offers the kids more stability in routine, behavior, and their family togetherness. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Linda Kozlowski, 67, Shows Off Her Perfect Figure In A New Photo The Noodle Box Also Read: Travis Hunter Continues Two Position Role As Trevor Lawrence And Coaching Staff Monitor His Snap Count Closely Kroy Biermann explains the need for primary custody to protect children's best interests Kroy Biermann points out that the current weekly rotation between his home and Kim Zolciak's disrupts the children's daily lives. He claims the older sons and younger twins live almost separate lives, and this split can create confusion and stress for the children. Kroy Biermann says that his goal is to offer a stable environment where all four kids can be together, receive consistent guidance, and have regular parental involvement. He argues that being the primary custodian in his home would be better supervision, more structured activities and a healthier environment for the kids. The legal filing was filed in Georgia in August 2025, and Kroy Biermann's lawyers are now asking the judge for a review and to grant him primary custody. The case is gripping due to the continued disagreements between former NFL star Biermann and Kim Zolciak about how they are parenting and caring for their children. Biermann states the move has everything to do with the children's best interests, nothing to do with personal matters, and to ensure a more stable and accountable home for all four kids. Haywood Highsmith has been traded (Image via Getty Images) The Miami Heat's roster is now down to 13 players on standard contracts for the upcoming season, two fewer than the NBA regular-season cap of 15 players on standard deals. This was because they traded the star player without receiving a player in exchange. It would drop from around $1.3 million above the luxury-tax threshold to roughly $4.3 million below it by cutting Haywood Highsmith's almost $5.6 million salary. The team was determined to avoid the luxury tax for the upcoming season after finishing as a luxury tax team in each of the previous two seasons. The management wanted to avoid the burdensome tax that is imposed when a team crosses the luxury tax threshold four times in a five-season span or four times in a single season. On the other hand, Haywood Highsmith has sustained a knee injury while exercising. After ten weeks, he will rejoin the team on October 17. Opening night is just a few days away. However, he won't be able to experience the team's training camp or preseason schedule. He would also need some time to get back in his game.
