Spring training roundup: Pirates charge past Phillies
March 18 - Javier Rivas hit a walk-off solo home run to complete a three-run uprising and hand the Pittsburgh Pirates a 3-2 win over the visiting Philadelphia Phillies in spring-training action on Tuesday in Bradenton, Fla.
Scoreless through eight, the Pirates got on the board with a pair of RBI sacrifice flies by Nick Yorke and Bryce Johnson before Phillies reliever Josh Hejka (0-1) replaced Devin Sweet and Rivas blasted the game-winner to left center.
Joey Bart and Adam Frazier finished with two hits apiece for Pittsburgh. Wilkin Ramos (1-0) pitched the eighth and ninth innings and fanned two without a hit.
Nick Castellanos drove in the Phillies' runs on a solo shot in the first and an infield single in the sixth. Starter Cristopher Sanchez lasted five innings, with two strikeouts and four hits.
Tigers 6, Twins 5
Detroit scored three in the top of the ninth and dug out of a 5-0 hole to beat host Minnesota in Fort Myers, Fla.
Thayron Liranzo worked an 11-pitch walk to load the bases in the top of the ninth against Jhoan Duran (0-1) and, after a pitching change, Ben Malgeri pushed across one run with a walk. Brady Allen's grounder was booted to score two runners.
Justyn-Henry Malloy hit a two-run single to get the Tigers' offense going, and reliever Troy Watson (1-0) threw a hitless eighth for the win. Edouard Julien had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs to lead the Twins' offense.
Red Sox 4, Yankees 4
Anthony Volpe hit two RBI singles for New York as it drew with visiting Boston in Tampa, Fla.
Volpe's second single scored an additional runner thanks to a fielding error in center by Trayce Thompson, which made it 4-2 Yankees. Roman Anthony poked a run-scoring single in the seventh and Rob Refsnyder tied the game with a sac fly in the eighth.
Masataka Yoshida hit a two-run homer for the Red Sox while Walker Buehler worked five innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits, fanning four. Max Fried threw 4 1/3 scoreless frames with two hits and struck out three for the Yankees.
Marlins 4, Cardinals 4
Connor Caskenette's pinch-hit RBI single tied the game in the top of the ninth as Miami finished all square with host St. Louis in Jupiter, Fla.
Nick Fortes had an RBI double and Xavier Edwards added a run-scoring single for the Marlins. Starter Connor Gillispie went four innings and yielded one run on two hits and two walks.
The Cardinals turned a two-run deficit into a 4-3 lead with an RBI groundout followed by Pedro Pages' and Jose Fermin's back-to-back homers. Miles Mikolas tossed six innings and allowed three runs on six hits and two walks, striking out four.

Yankees' Giancarlo Stanton begins rehab assignment
June 10 - Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton will begin a rehab assignment Tuesday at Double-A Somerset, putting him one step closer to his 2025 debut for New York. The five-time All-Star and former National League MVP has been sidelined all season with injuries to both elbows. Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed last week that Stanton, 35, was making progress. "He's probably headed up here, but I don't know the next step if it's a rehab assignment or what," Boone said last Thursday. Stanton went on the 10-day injured list in late March and was transferred to the 60-day IL in May due to right and left elbow epicondylitis, an issue last season that resurfaced before spring training. Playing exclusively at designated hitter last season, Stanton batted .233 with 27 home runs and 72 RBIs in 114 games. In seven seasons with the Yankees, he has belted 162 homers and driven in 431 runs while hitting .241. Calf, hamstring, Achilles and elbow issues have been a roadblock to Stanton's availability. He has averaged just 94.7 games per season since joining New York, playing more than 115 games just twice -- most recently in 2021 when he played 139 games. --Field Level Media

Rays outlast Red Sox in 11 in Roman Anthony's debut
June 10 - Jake Mangum went 4-for-6 with two RBIs for the Tampa Bay Rays, who scored twice in the 11th inning to upend the host Boston Red Sox 10-8 in the opener of a three-game series Monday night. After Junior Caminero drew a bases-loaded, full-count walk off Red Sox reliever Zack Kelly (1-3), Mangum beat out an RBI infield single that delivered an insurance run and helped Massachusetts native Ian Seymour (1-0) earn a win in his MLB debut. Yandy Diaz and Jonathan Aranda also had multiple hits for the victorious Rays. Seven of the 10 half-innings from the seventh through 11th featured scoring, but Tampa Bay held the hosts to 4-for-23 with runners in scoring position. Aranda hit a two-out RBI single during Tampa Bay's three-run seventh, and after Trevor Story's RBI single brought Boston within a run in the bottom half, the first baseman skied a ninth-inning sacrifice fly to center field. The Red Sox, though, would not be denied in the ninth. After Rafael Devers drew a leadoff walk and Abraham Toro cranked a wall-ball double, Roman Anthony -- No. 1 prospect who was making his big-league debut -- recorded an RBI groundout and Kristian Campbell knocked a game-tying RBI single over the pitcher's mound. In the 10th, a Taylor Walls sac fly gave Tampa the lead, but Toro reached on Aranda's fielding error that allowed Ceddanne Rafaela to score another tying run for Boston. Red Sox manager Alex Cora was ejected for arguing a strikeout call in Romy Gonzalez's penultimate at-bat of the game in the 11th. Story, Gonzalez and Rafaela all had two hits for Boston. Anthony, who was recalled from Triple-A Worcester earlier in the day, went 0-for-4 with a walk and the aforementioned RBI. Tampa's Shane Baz and Boston's Brayan Bello traded zeroes through three innings before the visitors scored on Mangum's two-out RBI single in the fourth and twice more in the fifth to take the lead. An inning after Mangum's go-ahead RBI, the Rays added to their advantage in a two-run fifth as Brandon Lowe and Diaz knocked two-out RBI singles. The latter preceded a misplay by Anthony in right, but Bello recovered to strike out Aranda to end the inning. Marcelo Mayer's leadoff double and a following single by Rafaela set the table for Boston in the fifth. Connor Wong's double-play groundout plated the first run. The Red Sox made it 3-3 after a two-run double by Gonzalez -- a line drive down the right field line off reliever Garrett Cleavinger, scoring Devers (walk) and Toro (hit by pitch). The Rays broke the game back open in a three-run seventh, including Josh Lowe's go-ahead double into the right-center gap. Walls scored after drawing a leadoff walk. Aranda added an insurance RBI single later in the frame. A Toro RBI groundout and Story's single brought the hosts back within one in their half. --Field Level Media

Red Sox call up Roman Anthony to bat fifth Monday vs. Rays
June 9 - The Boston Red Sox called up outfielder Roman Anthony from Triple-A Worcester ahead of Monday's home game against the Tampa Bay Rays. Anthony, regarded as Major League Baseball's No. 1 prospect, will start in right field and bat fifth for the Red Sox on Monday. The left-handed hitter takes the spot that belonged to Wilyer Abreu, who was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left oblique strain. Anthony, the team's second-round pick in the 2022 MLB Draft, forged a .288/.423/.491 slash line in 58 games for Worcester this season. He posted 10 homers and 29 RBIs in 265 plate appearances -- highlighted by a grand slam on Saturday that flew well over the right-center wall and was estimated at 497 feet. "We're trying to win ballgames," said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. "The kid has done an amazing job throughout (prospect development) getting ready for this moment. We're excited. It's a big day for the organization ... we'll use him the right way and we'll help him with the adjustments that comes with being a big-leaguer." The Red Sox (32-35) now have elevated all three of their elite hitting prospects to the bigs. Second baseman/outfielder Kristian Campbell broke spring training with Boston and, after a red-hot start, has settled in with a .233 average, six homers and 20 RBIs in 58 games. Shortstop Marcelo Mayer was called up two weeks ago when third basemen Alex Bregman went on the injured list with a quadriceps issue. Installed at third base where he had little experience, Mayer has posted a .222/.282/.361 slash line with one homer and two errors in 12 games. Abreu ranks second on the Red Sox with 13 homers, complementing a .245 batting average with 32 RBIs. --Field Level Media
