A woman died and another passenger was injured when a speeding Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) bus rammed into a station platform where passengers were waiting, at Dwaraka Bus Station in the city on Monday.
The authorities have not confirmed the cause of the accident, but it is suspected that the accident occurred due to brake failure.
The deceased has been identified as Gedela Muthyalamma (45), a resident of Pothanapalli village in S. Kota mandal in Vizianagaram district.
According to eyewitnesses, the bus rammed into the station platform between Platforms 24 and 25 at around 4:45 p.m. Muthyalamma was hit by the bus and died on the spot. A man waiting near Muthyalamma sustauined greivous injuries.
Two Town police shifted the body to King George Hospital (KGH) for post-mortem. The injured was admitted to the same hospital.
According to APSRTC Deputy Chief Traffic Manager K. Padmavathy, the bus, a hired vehicle being used as a Palle Velugu service, plies between Srikakulam and Visakhapatnam.
'After arriving from Srikakulam, the driver kept the bus at the drop-off point for around 30 minutes after all the passengers alighted. The incident happened when the driver was trying to park the vehicle at the bus bay on the platform to pick up passengers for the return journey. We are yet to ascertain the exact reason behind the incident. The police are investigating. As per rules, the speed limit for buses on the bus station premises is 5 kmph,' Ms. Padmavathy told The Hindu.
The bus has been seized and the driver has been taken into custody, the police said, adding that an alcohol test performed on the driver came negative.
'Preliminary investigation suggested that a brake failure might have caused the incident. The driver also claimed the same. However, we are investigating the case thoroughly,' the police told the media.
In a similar incident at Pandit Nehru Bus Station (PNBS) in Vijayawada in November 2023, three passengers died on the spot after an APSRTC bus rammed into a platform.

Kerala woman's alleged suicide over ‘forced' conversion triggers row

The alleged suicide of a 23-year-old woman in Kerala's Ernakulam district after she was allegedly tortured by a man and his family who insisted that she convert to his faith has triggered a row, The Indian Express reported on Tuesday. The woman, a college student Sona Eldose, was found dead at her home in Kothamangalam town on Saturday, The Hindu reported. The police had initially registered a case of unnatural death. However, a purported suicide note was recovered, following which the police on Monday arrested the man, and charged him with abetting suicide and physical assault. The man was identified as 24-year-old Ramees. Ramees, a part-time employee at the Kochi airport, had also been picked up by the police two weeks earlier on allegations of 'immoral trafficking', The Indian Express reported. Basil, Eldose's brother, told reporters that Ramees and his sister met in college. She was earlier willing to convert her religion and marry him, he said. 'But three months ago, our father died, and the marriage could only be held a year later,' the newspaper quoted him as saying. He claimed that Eldose changed her mind about converting after Ramees was caught for alleged trafficking. 'But he was insistent and wanted to stay at a religious centre at Ponnani [in Malappuram district] for two months,' Basil said. 'They even made arrangements to take her there. When she refused to go, Ramees and his family members tortured her after detaining her at their house.' In her purported suicide note, Eldose claimed that she had forgiven Ramees after he was caught for alleged trafficking and that she was ready for a registered marriage without the religious ceremonies. 'But he wanted me to convert,' The Indian Express quoted her as purportedly saying in the note. 'After taking me out of my home under the pretext of registering the marriage, he lodged me at his house, where his family members insisted that I should convert. When I refused, they tortured me.' The woman eventually returned home and allegedly died by suicide. Unidentified police officers told the newspaper that Eldose had sent the note to Ramees' mother on Saturday. She also informed her own mother, who, upon returning home, found that Sona had died. After the incident came to light, the Kerala Hindu Aikyavedi, a Hindutva outfit, and the Syro-Malabar Church described it as a case of 'love jihad', The Indian Express reported. Love jihad is a Hindutva conspiracy theory that Muslim men trick Hindu women into romantic relationships with the aim of converting them to Islam. The Union home ministry has told Parliament that Indian law has no provision defining such a term. V Babu, the state chief of the Kerala Hindu Aikyavedi, claimed that the 'secular' society in Kerala was busy criticising the film The Kerala Story even though it reflected the truth. The film, which released in May 2023, claims to depict how women from Kerala were converted to Islam and recruited by the Islamic State terror group. The filmmakers initially claimed that 32,000 women from Kerala had joined the Islamic State, but when asked for evidence, they altered the trailer to state that the movie was a 'compilation of the true stories of three young girls'. Critics have accused the film of spreading misinformation and inciting communal hatred. The Syro-Malabar Church said that political parties should show the courage to oppose all tendencies that pose a threat to secularism, the newspaper reported. 'It is sad that girls still fail to understand the religious extremists who make use of genuine love as a weapon of betrayal,' it said in a statement. 'It is expected that the law will take its course. Or, are we going to see the law taking the course of certain organised forces?'

MS Dhoni's Rs 100 Crore Defamation Case: HC Orders Trial, Cricketer To Record Statement

Last Updated: MS Dhoni is reportedly available to provide evidence between October 20 and December 10 as per a petition. MS Dhoni is set to record his statement after Madras High Court ordered a trial in a Rs 100 crore defamation case filed by the former India captain against two prominent media channels and a journalist for dragging his name in the 2013 IPL betting scandal. Justice CV Karthikeyan has appointed an advocate commissioner who will record the evidence on behalf of Dhoni. The two-time world cup winning captain will not appear in person for the examination as his presence could lead to chaos on account of him being a celebrity. The case was filed by Dhoni back in 2014 seeking damages of Rs 100 crore from the defendants. The 44-year-old alleges that during a Television debate on the IPL betting scandal, defamatory remarks were made against him. As per a report in The Hindu, senior counsel PR Raman submitted an affidavit from Dhoni seeking the start of the trial which has now been pending for a decade now thanks to the involved parties seeking relief over the years. 'The above request is made with the intent to avoid any undue delay (in disposal of the suit pending in the High Court for over a decade) and to support the fair, just, and speedy adjudication of the suit. I state that I shall extend my full co-operation with the Advocate Commissioner and comply with all directions issued by this honourable court regarding the trial and the recording of evidence," the affidavit read. The IPL spot-fixing and betting scandal of 2013 is considered to be a major blot in the T20 league's history. As many as three cricketers were found guilty of having indulged in spot fixing while two franchises – Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals – were suspended for two years due to the betting activities of their top officials. Dhoni retired from international cricket in August 2020 but continues to represent CSK in IPL. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
