'Don't Cast Amitabh Bachchan': Sholay Director Was WARNED Of Big B's Flops At Seeta Aur Geeta Jubilee Bash

News187 hours ago
As Sholay marks 50 years, Ramesh Sippy reflects on casting Amitabh Bachchan, whose performance became a key part of the film's legendary success.
This month marks 50 years since the release of Sholay, the 1975 film that became a milestone in Hindi cinema. While the movie is celebrated for its action, unforgettable dialogues, and iconic characters, one cannot overlook Amitabh Bachchan, who played the calm and composed Jai in the legendary Jai-Veeru duo.
Before Sholay, Bachchan had yet to make a mark at the box office. Many industry insiders even warned director Ramesh Sippy against casting him. 'When we were celebrating the jubilee of Seeta Aur Geeta (1972) with a party at home, a lot of people came there. They were whispering and advising me not to take him because he had a row of flops before that. They said, 'Don't make that mistake, young man! Don't do it,'" Sippy recalled.
Despite the warnings, Sippy felt Amitabh was the right choice. 'There was something about him that he felt right. There were a couple of good films in those that didn't work. In Anand (1971), Rajesh Khanna's role was far more expressive, and he (Bachchan) was the quiet man. But I don't think it would've worked if either of them hadn't worked. It's because he worked as the silent man that the other character got to take off," said Sippy.
Sippy also praised Amitabh's versatility. Recalling Bombay To Goa (1972), he said, 'Being such a huge guy, you could still see how his body movement was so free. He was so overpowering you might not remember the song, but you remember him because of the way he moved around, there was no awkwardness. There should've been because he could feel it. But he had to blend himself, look right, and have the rhythm while singing away."
Javed Akhtar also noticed Amitabh's talent during his comic action sequences. 'So when I saw these two contrasting characters and films, I felt here's a person who has the potential. Now, I already had so many accomplished stars… So let me take a chance with one, and it paid off," Sippy added.
By the time Sholay released, Amitabh had already found commercial success with hits like Zanjeer (1973) and Deewaar (1975). Yet his understated performance as Jai proved that subtlety could shine, leaving an indelible mark on Hindi cinema history.
Sholay (1975) tells the story of two friends, Jai and Veeru, who are hired by a retired police officer, Thakur Baldev Singh, to catch the feared bandit Gabbar Singh. Set in the village of Ramgarh, the film mixes action, drama, and comedy, and its characters, dialogues, and songs have made it a timeless classic in Hindi cinema.

'He taught me how to punctuate my dialogues, when to pause, and when not to,' shared Sharmila Tagore with us exclusively, as we connected with her on the occasion of Gulzar's birthday. 'Being a Bengali, my Hindi was not one of my strong points. He made me more confident in my spoken performance,' she recalled. Sharmila Tagore and Gulzar did several movies together, reminiscing about their collaborations, she mentioned about 'Mausum,' which the actress feels was a tough one. 'I had to play the mother and daughter as separate characters. The daughter, Kajri, was a prostitute. I had to speak like Kajri,' she said before adding, 'Cuss words were not challenging. They were new to me. I had to do a lot of preparation. This was not one of those walk-in-walk-out performances. ' She also revealed, 'For a long time, I considered 'Mausam' to be my favourite film with Gulzar Saab. But lately, I have begun to like 'Namkeen' more.' Explaining her reason, she said, 'There is something so endearing and warm about the film. Working with Waheedaji, Shabana, and Kiran Vairale, and of course, the ever-dependable Haribhai(Sanjeev Kumar). Of course, you do know that I was a last-minute replacement for Rekha?' She added, ''We shot Namkeen in Film City. It was almost like an outdoor location. My bonding with the actors was like nothing I had experienced before. Kiran Vairale and I were both fond of doing crossword puzzles. After shooting every evening, we would be huddled together over crosswords.' 'The more I think about it, the more I feel Namkeen is the best Hindi film I've done,' she concluded.

Kritika Kamra Reacts To Her Limited Role In Saare Jahan Se Accha: 'Female Characters Tend To…'

Last Updated: Kritika Kamra reveals many of her scenes were cut in Netflix's Saare Jahan Se Accha. She told News18 Showsha that she finds it hard to watch herself on the screen. Kritika Kamra played a pivotal role in the recently released Netflix series, Saare Jahan Se Accha. However, not a lot of her scenes made it to the final cut. In an exclusive conversation with News18 Showsha, Kritika spoke about the same. She also opened up about the challenges of watching herself on screen and how she prepared for her intense character. Speaking about self-criticism, Kritika Kamra admitted she finds it 'very difficult" to watch her own performances. 'I can't. Most actors I know have this issue. I only do it when I'm forced to, at screenings. It's hard to be objective. When I watch, I'm constantly judging myself and I go into a loop of 'I could have done this better.' That's why I rely on the director's vision and the audience's feedback instead," she told us. Kritika, who essays the role of journalist Fatima in Saare Jahan Se Accha, revealed that some of her scenes did not make it to the final cut. 'I wish there was more of me. I did shoot a lot more, but unfortunately, it didn't make the final edit. I was also a bit surprised to see that stuff that I shot for has not really made it, but happens sometimes. You, as an actor, don't really have control over the final edit. Often, the pace of a show takes precedence, and female characters tend to bear the brunt of it. Layers and complexities sometimes get compromised in the interest of speed," Kritika noted. Kritika Kamra on how she prepares for her roles On preparing for her character, Kritika says she drew inspiration from real-life journalists and public figures. 'Fatima is an intellectual elite, an editor who probably studied abroad. I wanted her to sound different from the other characters—her Urdu is touch-and-go, and she uses a lot more English. It helped me bring subtlety to the role," she explained. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Netflix India (@netflix_in) Kritika Kamra on sensitively portraying India-Pakistan backdrop Given the show's sensitive India-Pakistan backdrop, Kritika admitted she was initially cautious. 'When I met the makers for the first time, that's when I was quite careful about this. And instantly I realised that the makers were all on the same page and everybody understood how sensitive this is and they wanted to approach it with that sensitivity and sensibility and have a very balanced human view on people from both sides of the border." 'That's what drew me in. As someone interested in politics and history, the project felt both meaningful and ambitious," she said. Saare Jahan Se Accha has been streaming on Netflix from August 13, 2025. First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive.
