Cravin', the popular Mold bakery was refurbished and re-launched by new owner Shane Mellor, earlier this year. Shane used to be a stall holder on Mold Market with an artisan bread and cake stall, so is well known in the town.
Shane's baking heritage goes back to 1968 and he is incredibly proud of his range of handmade products, produced at his small bakery in Neston.
Cravin' is known for its old school cakes, ice cream, milkshakes and hot desserts as well as a fantastic savoury range of delicious gourmet sausage rolls, handmade pasties and tasty quiches. It's really difficult to walk past the Cravin' shop window, without gazing lovingly at the cakes.
Cravin' recently caused a bit of a fuss in the town by advertising the sausage rolls as 'Mold's most expensive sausage rolls' and they even released a mug, which had the words 'I am the mug who paid £4 for a sausage roll' on them.
Mold's most expensive sausage rolls may be the talk of the town, but these gourmet rolls are much bigger and tastier than your usual bog-standard sausage rolls. They are named things like 'Get Stuffed' 'Boss Hog' 'Pigin Pickle' or 'Cheesy Trotter' although they did have a traditional one called 'Olde English' as well.

We decided to see what the fuss was about and popped into the shop. Be warned, the smell of sugar in the store, might play havoc with your sweet tooth. The head spinning cake display is worth a visit in its own right. But first, we took a gander at the controversial pork savoury snacks.
We saw a sign that offered three sausage rolls for £10, which seemed like too many sausage snacks for me, but the lady behind the counter handily suggested that you can also mix and match with the fine-looking cakes as well.
I decided to go with a 'Bombay Bad Hog' although I did feel a little self-conscious saying it out loud. This sausage roll included top quality seasoned pork with red onion and Indian spice, wrapped in a flaky puff pastry. This puff pastry bite had a little bit of a kick to it, but it was fairly lightly spiced compared to the ominous name.
I also went for one entitled 'El Matador'. This Spanish sounding sausage roll was made with chorizo and paprika. Just by adding a tiny bit of chorizo, took this sausage rolls from standard to fabulous. The paprika added a smoky, sweet tang to the crisp red-tinged outer layer of pastry. The moist underbelly was tightly packed with tasty peppery pork.
It was impossible to pick one cake from the wondrous display of sweet baked goods, but needs must. They had everything here from silky buttercreams, loaf cakes to golden sponges. Reece's or Freddo brownies and Jammy dodger tarts were all competing for your attention, alongside all manner of old school cakes.

A lot of the cakes were taking advantage of the Dubai Chocolate Pistachio craze with Pistachio éclairs, Pistachio brownies or Pistachio lemon tarts on sale.
I decided to try the Pistachio rocky road. It was a door stopper of smashed up salted green pistachio nuts, mixed with fluffy pink and white marshmallows, dense digestive biscuits and coated in a heavenly mixture of melted milk chocolate and syrup.
Before you knew it, your taste buds were having an affair with a mouth-wateringly good, salted pistachio bar, full of squidgy slabs of deliciousness.
In truth, it was too big for one person, so we cut into half and shared it. The sugar rush to the head was amazing.
We didn't partake with any beverages but noticed that they offered 'Milkshake madness" with thick, creamy, dreamy shakes with flavours such as chocolate, vanilla or strawberry for £3.50 each or 2 for £5.
You could also upgrade and create your own masterpiece using any of their chocolate bars or sweets. Think Oreo overload, Kinder chaos, Biscoff heaven or Haribo happiness, the choice is yours.
They also offered tea, coffee and hot chocolate but that sounded a bit boring after looking at the milkshake machine. However, I had craved enough sugar and carbs for one day, so decided to leave the milkshake machine alone.
The Mold sausage roll controversy just seemed like a bit of good marketing to me. Their super tasty gourmet sausage rolls were packed with quality pork with a variety of fun names, which could turn the head of even the fussiest of sausage roll desperadoes.
Yep, in summary, it looks like Craven' is on a roll, when it comes to serving up a perfectly good baked sausage gourmet delight.

North Wales shopping park secures major new retail lettings at empty units

A retail park has secured lettings for two large empty units. Island Green Shopping Centre in Wrexham had lost a number of brands in recent years, with occupancy falling to near 70%. But Focus Estate Fund has now bagged lettings at the former Wilko and Asda Living stores. The units have been taken by Trade Outlet, a growing discount retail chain offering a mix of household goods, electricals, homewares, and general merchandise. The brand will occupy over 45,000 sq ft combined, breathing new life into long-vacant anchor space and "broadening the value offer at the centre". Sign up for the North Wales Live newsletter sent twice daily to your inbox Maxim Skolnick, general partner at Focus Estate Fund, said: 'At Focus Estate Fund, we specialize in turning around retail assets by identifying value-added potential and unlocking it through active management and strategic repositioning. Island Green is a clear example of this strategy in action. "When we took over the scheme, it was facing significant challenges — several major voids, declining footfall, and underutilized potential. Today, all key units are re-let, the tenant mix is stronger, and early indicators show the centre is regaining its traction. "This turnaround wouldn't have been possible without the excellent work of the teams at Estama and Barker Proudlove, and our in-house asset management team. There's still more to come — we're continuing to build on this momentum to deliver the strategy at its full potential.' Alex Butler, managing director at Estama of Island Green, added: 'These lettings are a big win for the scheme and the town. We're expecting a solid uplift in footfall as the new stores open, and the leasing momentum puts us in a strong position to complete the final phase of the asset plan.' Occupancy at Island Green has increased from 71.4% to 98.7% since Focus Estate Fund took ownership of the scheme. The centre is seeing increased activity; according to data from Euro Car Parks, the number of cars at the shopping centre rose by 23.8% compared to the same period last year. A spokesperson added "With the final major voids now let, this upward trend is expected to continue into the second half of 2025 as the new stores open. People who get four different DWP benefits urged not to ignore letter

While the Universal Credit and Personal Independence Bill is grabbing attention in Parliament, the transition to Universal Credit is quietly taking place. This managed migration began in May 2022 with the aim of moving all recipients of six legacy benefits onto the Universal Credit system. The DWP intends to send out migration notices to all remaining claimants by the end of this year, with a plan to close all legacy benefits by March 2026. Working Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit have already been phased out due to the migration. However, claimants of four other benefits are still being transferred and should anticipate a letter from the DWP if they haven't received one yet. The following benefits are set to cease soon as part of the Universal Credit migration: Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) Income Support Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) Housing Benefit People claiming these benefits who are affected by the migration will be sent a migration notice letter from the DWP. It's vital that people don't disregard this letter, as the migration won't be automatic and your benefits will terminate even if you decide not to claim Universal Credit, reports the Mirror. The letter you'll receive will include a personal deadline date, which is the final day you can apply for Universal Credit and still be eligible for transitional protection. You're free to apply for the benefit after this date or even before receiving a migration notice, but you'll miss out on this safeguard. The DWP clarifies: "As you've received a Migration Notice letter some of the normal eligibility rules for claiming are different. This is part of 'transitional protection'." This transitional protection is designed to make sure that individuals receive the same amount on Universal Credit as they did from their previous benefits, regardless of whether they fit the new criteria, to prevent anyone from being worse off due to the change. Take, for instance, if you were getting £140.55 weekly on ESA but under Universal Credit's standard rules, you're only entitled to £100, you'd receive an extra £40.55 per week as transitional protection. Sign up for the North Wales Live newsletter sent twice daily to your inbox Should you find yourself unable to apply before your transitional protection deadline, it's crucial to ring the Universal Credit Migration Notice Helpline at 0800 169 0328. If you have a valid reason and contact them before your deadline, you might be granted an extension. To claim Universal Credit, you can go online and set up a Universal Credit account. Remember, you must finish your application within 28 days of creating the account. Alternatively, you can apply over the phone using the Universal Credit Migration Notice Helpline. The shift to Universal Credit is still ongoing, with a significant overhaul planned for next year. The proposed alterations in the forthcoming Bill will slash and freeze the health component rate for new claimants from April 2026. Those already receiving the benefit before the change comes into effect will be shielded from the reduction. Considering the government's plan to send out all migration notices by December 2025 and wrap up all legacy benefits by March 2026, those transitioning to Universal Credit should also be safeguarded by this concession.

Llandudno seafront venture aims to honour town's Victorian legacy

A small family business is hoping to get licensing permission for a sauna and 'sea dipping' venture on Llandudno 's West Shore. Conwy 's general licensing committee is set to consider a request on Monday (21 July) that would allow the operators — Pethi Sauna— to run electric sauna sessions from Dale Road Car Park, West Shore, near the Coast Watch Cabin. The proposal would require a change in the street's current designation from "prohibited" to "consent", allowing trading to take place. The applicants, a local couple with ties to the area, say they want to create a quiet, sustainable space for residents and tourists to unwind. In a statement submitted ahead of the meeting, the team behind the venture describe their business as 'a mobile, all-electric sauna designed with care for the local environment and heritage". They claim the 'sleek, modern-looking' sauna, which is still under construction, would run on 'green energy', produce zero emissions, and operate up to five days a week, offering bilingual group or private sessions lasting between 50-80 minutes. S ign up for the North Wales Live newsletter sent twice daily to your inbox. Up to eight people would be allowed per session, with sea dipping permitted at users' 'own risk', in line with other coastal sauna operators. The applicants also pledge to employ and train local staff, work with nearby cafés, therapists, and fitness providers, offering a 'pay it forward' scheme for those unable to afford sessions. Llandudno councillor Louise Emery is among those said to support the scheme. The business says the proposal could help Llandudno re-establish itself as a destination for sustainable wellness tourism, pointing to similar ventures in Gwynedd, Anglesey, and Ireland that have proven popular with both locals and councils. The company says: 'Llandudno was once a celebrated Victorian spa town, attracting visitors to its sea air and wellness treatments. 'Our electric sauna continues this legacy with a modern, sustainable twist. It offers a peaceful space for people to unwind and reconnect with nature, themselves, and the landscape.' The statement added: 'Small-scale health-focused experiences like sauna bathing can help re-establish Llandudno as a destination for sustainable well-being tourism.' Members of the licensing committee will now decide whether to lift the current trading restriction and grant the necessary consent for the sauna to operate.
