Quoting sources, Associated Press (AP) reported that under purported plan, which is the brainchild of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Jewish state is in talks with the African nation. What is Israel's Gaza relocation plan? The move is part is of Israel's broader plan to 'encourage' the mass exodus of Gazans from the Strip, where thousands of Palestinian civilians, including women and children, have been killed in Israeli military action against the Hamas armed group for the past 22 months. As per the AP report, the proposed Gaza relocation plan has raised human rights concerns as Gazans would essentially be relocated from one war-ravaged, famine-prone region to another. However, the progress of the alleged talks between Israel and South Sudan on the matter is unclear at present. Meanwhile, the purported Gaza relocation plan championed by PM Benjamin Netanyahu, has triggered a backlash from global rights groups and the international community at large, who have rejected the 'insidious' proposal, saying it violates international law, and dubbed it as a blueprint for the forced expulsion of Palestinians, and part of Israel's alleged 'Greater Israel' plan. The relocation plan would allow Israel to annex the Gaza Strip and build Jewish settlements in the Palestinian homeland after forcing out the natives, they allege. Why Israel's plan is facing global backlash? Additionally, South Sudan has been at war for almost half of the time since independence from Sudan in 2011, and is currently facing a political crisis with President Salva Kiir's government recently placing Vice President Riek Machar under house arrest, once again raising the risk of a civil war in the African nation. The famine-ravaged country is crippled by rampant corruption and relies upon international aid to feed its 11 million population, a challenge that has increased after the Trump administration drastically cut foreign aid. Will South Sudan accept Israel's offer? Notably, South Sudan has refuted claims that it was in talks with Israel on the matter. 'The claims are unfounded and do not reflect the official position or policy of the government of South Sudan,' South Sudan's foreign ministry said in a statement, which came after Israel's Deputy Foreign Minister Sharen Haskel met South Sudan President Salva Kiir and Foreign Minister Semaaya Kumba. Experts believe the deal could be a major opportunity for South Sudan to forge closer ties with Israel, and also improve relations with Washington, particularly the Donald Trump administration, that had previously supported the idea but has backed away from it in recent months. What are the challenges to settling Gazans in South Sudan? However, Israel's plan to resettle Palestinians faces multi-faceted challenges as the African country is predominantly Christian and animist, and is in constant turmoil with the Arab and Muslim-dominated north Sudan, with whom it fought a long war for South Sudan's independence. This historical animosity with Arab Muslims means Palestinians may not feel welcome in South Sudan. 'South Sudan should not become a dumping ground for people,' said Edmund Yakani, head of a South Sudanese civil society group. Yakani warned of tensions if the identity of the incoming people and the duration of their stay is not clear. The report, citing Egyptian officials, said that Egypt, which shares a border with Gaza, has known for months about Israel's efforts to persuade other countries, including South Sudan, to accept Palestinians. Cairo has strongly opposed Israel's plan and pressured South Sudan not to accept the proposal because it fears it could lead to a flood of refugees into its own territory, the report added. Turkiye to provide weapons, support to Syria under new defence agreement
Ankara, Aug 14 (AP) Turkiye will provide weapons, military equipment, and logistical support to Syria under a newly signed defence cooperation agreement, Turkish Defence Ministry officials said Thursday. The announcement came a day after Turkish Defence Minister Yasar Guler and Syria's Defence Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra signed a memorandum of understanding for cooperation on military training and consultancy, reinforcing Turkiye's support to Syria's interim government. Syria last month requested Turkiye's support to strengthen its defence capabilities following sectarian violence in the country that also drew intervention by Israel. Under the agreement, Turkiye would share its 'knowledge and experience" and supply military equipment, weapons systems and logistical materials to help strengthen the country's capabilities, Turkish Defence Ministry officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to be quoted by name. Syria's newly formed interim government has faced mounting challenges in restoring order and addressing the deep scars left by nearly 14 years of civil conflict, following the ouster of former President Bashar Assad by Islamist-led rebel forces in December. Most recently, hundreds were killed in clashes in the southern province of Sweida between government forces and local Bedouin tribesmen on one side and fighters from the Druze minority on the other. Turkiye has been supportive of Syria's new administration, which is formed largely by rebels that Ankara backed during the civil war. Also Wednesday, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan warned Israel and Kurdish fighters to cease actions threatening Syria's stability, accusing them of undermining the country's efforts to reestablish itself after more than a decade of civil war. Speaking during a joint news conference Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani in Ankara, Fidan accused the US-allied and Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, or SDF, of stalling the implementation of an agreement that was reached in March to merge with the Syrian army. Last week, representatives of Syria's various ethnic and religious groups held a conference in the northeastern Syrian city of Hassakeh — which is under the SDF's control — and called for the formation of a decentralised state and the drafting of a new constitution that guarantees religious, cultural and ethnic pluralism. The Syrian government criticised the meeting, and alleged that among the attendees were some with secessionist ambitions. It said that as a result it no longer intends to join planned talks with the SDF in Paris that had been agreed upon in late July. No date had yet been set for the Paris talks.
