Vijay Deverakonda's Kingdom Faces Protests For Hurting Tamil Sentiments

Last Updated: The Telugu film Kingdom, starring Vijay Deverakonda, faces protests in Tamil Nadu for allegedly misrepresenting Tamil identity and hurting religious sentiments. The release of the Telugu film Kingdom, starring Vijay Deverakonda, has triggered widespread protests in Tamil Nadu, with several groups accusing the film of misrepresenting Tamil identity and hurting religious sentiments. The film, directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, premiered globally on July 31 but has since become the focus of a growing controversy. Criticism has largely stemmed from Tamil nationalist group Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK), which has taken strong exception to certain elements in the film. Members of the group claim Kingdom portrays Sri Lankan Tamils in a negative light. Further anger was directed at the film's decision to name its antagonist 'Murugan', a name associated with one of Tamil Nadu's most revered deities, Lord Murugan. NTK condemned these creative choices, calling them deliberate and insensitive. According to the group, the film maligns both the identity and cultural history of Tamils. In response, protests were staged outside multiple theatres across the state, with party members demanding that Kingdom be banned from screening in Tamil Nadu. One of the more serious incidents occurred in Ramanathapuram, where NTK supporters gathered outside a cinema hall to obstruct the film's screening. Protesters raised slogans and called for an immediate stop to the show. The situation escalated when police intervened to disperse the crowd, leading to a confrontation between law enforcement and demonstrators. A minor scuffle reportedly broke out during the standoff, prompting the deployment of additional forces to restore order. While no injuries have been reported, security remains heightened in the area to prevent further disturbances. The film features Vijay Deverakonda in the lead, alongside Bhagyashree and Satyadev in key roles. Despite its star cast and scale, the film's reception in Tamil Nadu has been clouded by the controversy surrounding its content. NTK has renewed calls for government intervention, pressing the Tamil Nadu administration to impose a ban on the film, which it claims spreads anti-Tamil narratives and disregards deeply held cultural beliefs. As tensions persist, political observers warn that the controversy may intensify if no response is issued by the filmmakers or the censor board. Talking about the box office collections, according to the latest figures from Sacnilk, Kingdom earned just Rs 2.25 crore on Day 5, its lowest so far. The film had kicked off with a strong opening of Rs 18 crore on Thursday, but the weekend didn't see any big jump. It collected Rs 7.5 crore on Saturday and Rs 8 crore on Sunday. With Monday and Tuesday showing a clear dip, Kingdom's total box office collection now stands at Rs 43.15 crore. At the heart of Kingdom is Vijay Deverakonda's Suri, a simple police constable with a very personal mission. He goes undercover in Sri Lanka to take down a dangerous drug cartel, hoping it'll somehow lead him to his long-lost brother, Siva (played by Satyadev). But things get messier than he imagined. He soon crosses paths with the menacing cartel kingpin Murugan (Venkitesh), and what follows is a high-stakes game of deception, danger, and emotional turmoil. Helping him navigate this chaos is Dr Madhu (Bhagyashri Borse), who is also working undercover. First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. RTC union threatens stir over land allotment to LuLu Group in Vijayawada

The A.P. Public Transport Department Employees Union has threatened to launch an agitation if the State government does not cancel G.O. No. 137, which allots APSRTC land in Vijayawada to the LuLu Group for the construction of a shopping mall. Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, union zonal secretary B. Krishna Murthy said that the RTC land in question, located at Governorpet 1 & 2 Depots and the Old Bus Stand, is valued at around ₹400 crore. The land, situated in the heart of Vijayawada city, currently serves 200 buses and over 1,100 employees, besides catering to thousands of commuters daily. He said the land had originally been acquired by APSRTC in 1959 at ₹16 per square yard for a total of ₹4.60 lakh, and strongly opposed its allotment to private entities. He suggested that if the government aims to develop 'Navyandhra Pradesh', commercial complexes like shopping malls should be set up on the outskirts of the city to boost suburban development. Criticising the move, Mr. Krishna Murthy said allotting prime RTC land while announcing free bus travel for women from August 15 would adversely affect female passengers. He alleged that the government was trying to privatise the RTC through backdoor methods by handing over its assets to private players. Citing earlier instances, he said the RTC Training College in Vijayawada, spread over 29 acres, was handed to a private company in 2014, and in 2017 there were attempts to depict the Governorpet Depots as being in a 'buffer zone' to facilitate similar transfers. He claimed that despite RTC employees working for the electoral success of the TDP-led alliance, the new government was now attempting to weaken the corporation. Union State secretary N.V. Rama Rao, zonal joint secretary M.S. Narayana, and other leaders G. Tatalu, M. Sankara Rao, K.S.M.S. Swami, K. Srinivasa Rao, and V.V. Rao were also present at the press meet.

Cash, cameras and confusion: Who is Andhra politics' mystery man Venkatesh Naidu?

In Andhra Pradesh's ever-turbulent political theatre, a new face has taken centre stage — and he brings with him bundles of cash and an entourage of confusion. Venkatesh Naidu, the man starring in a now-viral liquor scam video, has both the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) and the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) pointing fingers faster than a Tollywood rumoured to be a YSRCP insider, Naidu's alleged affiliations took a dramatic turn when photos surfaced of him posing with TDP heavyweights Chandrababu Naidu and Nara Lokesh. The YSRCP was quick to seize the moment, branding the episode a 'cash camera conspiracy' — a staged distraction to divert attention from policy failures and mounting public the liquor probe itself is not new, the sudden release of a video showing Naidu calmly handling stacks of cash has added fresh fuel to old allegations. First painted as a YSRCP loyalist, Naidu's growing photo archive suggests a warmer equation with TDP's top brass — including candid frames alongside Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and his son Nara Members of Parliament are now circulating these images as proof that Naidu is not one of theirs. Instead, they argue, his true loyalties lie across the aisle. 'He's not ours. The pictures show where he truly belongs,' said YSRCP MP Maddila Gurumoorthy, who also called the video's release 'too perfectly timed' — coinciding with opposition attacks on the government's liquor policy and debt TDP, meanwhile, insists Naidu is not a party member and accuses YSRCP of twisting the narrative to deflect scrutiny. With the footage trending and no clear context available, the public remains caught in a political screenplay of selective snapshots, shifting blame, and strategic thing is clear — in the ongoing Andhra liquor saga, it is not just the bottle that has been uncorked. The drama is only getting louder.- Ends IN THIS STORY#Andhra Pradesh
