Anantapur: Kadapa district witnessed a vibrant and energetic gathering as the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) held its Mahanadu, with enthusiastic participation from leaders and supporters, especially from the Puttaparthi constituency. The event was marked by the strong presence of TDP leaders, including National General Secretary Nara Lokesh Babu, who was praised for giving women MLAs prominent recognition and respect on the Mahanadu stage. The Kadapa Mahanadu venue was filled with party cadres, transforming the premises into a sea of yellow, resembling a grand public fair.
On stage, Nara Lokesh Babu specially greeted key leaders from the region, including Puttaparthi MLA Palle Sindhura Reddy, Minister Savithamma, MLAs Paritala Sunitha, Bandaru Sravani, and other prominent representatives, highlighting the unity and strength of the party. During the event, MLA Palle Sindhura Reddy and former minister Dr. Palle Raghunath Reddy inspected exhibitions and blood donation camps, interacting warmly with the large number of TDP workers who had gathered from across the Puttaparthi constituency.

TDP, YSRCP activists clash during Jagan's Podili visit
Vijayawada: Tension prevailed as TDP and YSRCP activists clashed and pelted stones at each other during former chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy's visit to the tobacco auction platform in Podili on Wednesday. The confrontation resulted in injuries to at least three police constables and two women. Additional police forces were deployed to the town to restore order. The disturbance began when TDP women activists protested against Jagan's visit by hoisting black balloons and displaying placards. They vocally opposed Jagan, demanding an apology for the recent controversy over comments on Amaravati women on a TV channel. YSRCP activists countered the protest with their own slogans and attempted to disperse the TDP activists. The situation escalated when TDP members hurled stones and chappals at Jagan's convoy, prompting retaliatory action from YSRCP supporters. Police had a tough time in managing the warring groups. Condemned the incident, HRD minister Nara Lokesh warned that the govt would not tolerate assaults on women. "Women held the protest in a peaceful manner, and it is a shame that YSRCP chief Jagan encouraged his party members to attack women. We will not spare anyone who attacked women," he said. In response, YSRCP spokesperson and former minister Ambati Rambabu accused Lokesh of instigating the protests. "This is a deliberate ploy to generate law and order trouble. The ruling party encouraged similar protests during Jagan's recent visit to Tenali," Ambati stated. YSRCP women's wing president and MLC Varadu Kalyani too slammed TDP for "exploiting" women in what she termed "shameful diversion politics". "It is disgraceful that chief minister Chandrababu Naidu is stooping to such low tactics, using women to shield his administration's incompetence," she alleged, while claiming that unable to tolerate Jagan's connection with the masses, Naidu and Lokesh are resorting to "cheap diversion tactics". Later, during his interaction with tobacco farmers, Jagan criticised the govt for neglecting them and pushing them into severe distress. He attributed the rise in tobacco farmers' suicides over the past two months to the state govt's inaction and demanded that the govt assign Markfed as a buyer to ensure fair pricing. Highlighting the drastic fall in tobacco prices compared to previous year, he noted that prices have plummeted from Rs 360 per kg during the YSRCP regime to Rs 240 per kg for graded varieties in the current season.

Vijayawada: Energy minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar has ordered a field-level inquiry into the performance of smart meters following complaints that electricity bills increased after their installation in industrial and commercial establishments. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Responding to concerns raised by power consumers, the minister instructed officials to conduct a thorough investigation into the meters' functioning and to verify whether the billing hike was genuine or resulted from technical or procedural issues, and submit a detailed report. Ravi Kumar said the govt received feedback that electricity bills were rising after the installation of smart meters. "I have instructed officials to identify the reasons behind this. The functioning of smart meters is being closely examined, and I want to assure everyone that no consumer will be burdened even by a single rupee unnecessarily," he said. Sources said that the discoms were yet to submit the report to the minister as they have decided to put the newly procured meters on testing mode to ascertain the technical glitches. TDP, which strongly opposed the installation of smart meters while in opposition, seems to have quietly adapted to the YSRCP regime's decision. The govt has asked the discoms to proceed with the installation of smart meters in two phases. In the first phase, industrial units and commercial establishments will have their old RF meters replaced with smart meters, while household points will be covered in the second phase. Consumers would be burdened as they will have to bear the cost of the smart meters and their maintenance costs. Although the discoms will collect the costs in instalments, the cost of each smart meter is expected to be around Rs 8,000 for single-phase meters and Rs 17,000 for three-phase users. The smart meters' price in the open market ranges between Rs 3,000 and Rs 3,500.
