New PNC Park food items unveiled ahead of Pirates' 2025 season opener

CBS News18-03-2025
New food items that will be available at PNC Park for Pittsburgh Pirates games have been unveiled ahead of the team's home opener next month.
Aramark, the Pirates' food vendor, announced the new items on Monday, which includes several new offerings which will be available at PNC Park's Cannonball Stand.
The fried almond torte, which is made with funnel cake batter and topped with raspberry sauce, icing, and burnt almonds is new for this year.
Also new this year is the Polish Cannonball, a deep-fried ball filled with egg noodles, kielbasa, cabbage, bacon, and cheddar cheese and served with a creamy herb dip.
The last new item being introduced at PNC Park is the chipped ham empanada, which is filled with barbecue chipped ham, cheddar cheese, and pickles.
There will also be two new souvenirs for fans this year, including the Pirate Parrot foam mask, which will come with cotton candy sales and is adjustable for both adults and kids.
And just like the beer bat at other MLB stadiums, the Pirates are getting a popcorn bat and they're even thinking ahead, providing a lid that comes with the bat.
The Pirates are set to kick off their season on the road against the Miami Marlins on March 27 and the team will host the New York Yankees on April 4 for their home opener at PNC Park.

All three of Pittsburgh's major league stadiums named among the best for game day eats

Yelp, the crowd-sourced business review platform, released a ranking of the top 50 U.S. stadiums for game day food based on its data. Among the top 50 were all three of Pittsburgh's major league stadiums, including PNC Park, Acrisure Stadium, and PPG Paints Arena. "Today's stadiums are raising the bar on fan food with creative, crave-worthy dishes inspired by popular restaurants, global flavors, and hometown traditions," the survey said. Coming in at number two was the home of the Pittsburgh Pirates, PNC Park. "Fans can enjoy classic ballpark fare, but local specialties like the all-new crispy Polish Cannonballs, a deep-fried ball filled with egg noodles, kielbasa, cabbage, bacon, and cheddar cheese, and Primanti Bros. sandwiches," they said. PNC Park, obviously, got the highest ranking of the Pittsburgh venues, with Acrisure Stadium coming in 27th and PPG Paints Arena clocking in at 44th. According to Yelp's crowd-sourced reviews, Acrsure Stadium has an average rating of 4.5 stars out of 5, and PPG Paints Arena has an average rating of 4 stars out of 5. Pennsylvania also had other representation on Yelp's rankings, with Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia coming in at number 10.

Pirates call up top pitching prospect Bubba Chandler

The top pitching prospect in baseball is now a Bucco. Right-hander Bubba Chandler was called up by the Pirates on Wednesday ahead of their three-game series against the Blue Jays, which starts on Friday. Chandler has a 4.05 ERA this season in Triple-A Indianapolis, along with a 5-6 record, but is still listed as the majors' best pitching prospect according to MLB Pipeline. Pirates pitcher Bubba Chandler delivers a pitch during a spring training game against the Twins on Feb. 27, 2025. AP His 121 strikeouts are the most in the International League. The righty is expected to work out of the bullpen once he arrives in Pittsburgh, a similar move that the Pirates used with Braxton Ashcraft when he was called up earlier this year. 'Just getting him up here in the big leagues and getting him in that role,' Pirates manager Don Kelly said about the callup, according to the Associated Press. 'You saw Ashcraft really thrive in it. He got his feet wet in the bullpen, had some really big outings. … He's bounced around, done some different things, starting and being in the pen. 'To have [Chandler] in a situation like that, can go out in the pen and work on things at the big league level and be here to learn from the guys up here, and learn from the staff, the players and get feedback from major league meetings. It's really, really important for him and for us.' Ashcroft was in a similar position as Chandler coming out of Triple-A and he has gone 3-2 and posted a 3.02 ERA in 19 appearances. Ashcroft, who played with Chandler in Double-A and Triple-A, expressed excitement for the right-hander to be joining him in the big leagues. 'It's cool to see guys ascend into the pitchers that they aspire to be,' he said, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. 'I think that in that situation, there's a lot of emotions. There was for me. But ultimately it's just about the opportunity. I fully expect Bubba to be confident in that, excel in that role knowing that the end goal is to be a starting pitcher.'

Oviedo earns 1st major league win since 2023 as Pirates beat Blue Jays 2-1 to take the series

PITTSBURGH -- Johan Oviedo earned his first major league win since 2023 and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Toronto Blue Jays 2-1 on Wednesday to take the three-game series. In his second start since having Tommy John surgery in late 2023, Oviedo (1-0) struck out six, allowed two hits, one run and had a walk in five innings. His last win came with six scoreless innings in an 8-6 victory against the Cubs on Sept. 21, 2023. Dennis Santana struck out one in a perfect ninth for his ninth save. Toronto, first in the AL East, dropped two of three to Pittsburgh, last in the NL Central. George Springer quickly put the Blue Jays ahead, driving the 10th pitch of his leadoff at bat to the left-field bleachers for his 21st homer. Tommy Pham then plated a pair with a double in the bottom half. Bryan Reynolds hit a two-out double, Spencer Horwitz walked and Pham brought them in with a liner just inside the left-field line. Blue Jays starter Chris Bassitt (11-7) was tagged for two runs and six hits, tying a season-high with 10 strikeouts and walking two in 5 2/3 innings. Bo Bichette led off the fourth with a double. Oviedo kept him at second by striking out Alejandro Kirk, getting Daulton Varsho to fly out and sending Nathan Lukes down swinging after hitting Ty France with a pitch. The Pirates are 23-27 in a major league high 50 games decided by a single run. Blue Jays RHP Shane Bieber (0-0, 0.00 ERA) makes his season debut Friday, opening a three-game series at Miami. The 2020 AL Cy Young winner was traded by Cleveland to Toronto on July 31 and has not pitched in the majors since undergoing Tommy John surgery in April 2024. ___
