Five Luxe JBR review: Where Dubai's party brand meets refined beachfront luxury
Five Hotels is synonymous with Dubai's party scene, but Five Luxe JBR – the latest offering from homegrown brand Five Holdings – aims to strike a middle ground, offering a more balanced atmosphere than its JVC and Palm properties. Opened in April last year, the beachfront property is meant to be the most premium offering of the three, hosting an impressive line-up of bars and restaurants, including the Ibiza-famous Pacha brand, acquired by Five in 2023. Located in a quieter part of the vibrant Jumeirah Beach Residence area, the hotel offers sweeping views of Ain Dubai, Bluewaters Island, the Arabian Gulf and Palm Jumeirah. Plus, it can be easily accessed by taxis and the tram in the neighbouring Dubai Marina. It houses 222 rooms and 222 residences and, I'm told, is already frequented by celebrities, from sports stars to movie producers and DJs. The National checked in to find out what you can expect from this glamorous resort. The welcome As we drive in, there are supercars parked in front, a signature of the Five brand, before luggage porters whisk away my bags. Once inside the lobby, the first thing I notice is the triple height glass window that faces out to the swimming pool on the other side. A massive glass chandelier resembling a school of fish and bubbles hangs above the lounge. The staff are friendly and welcoming, helping me seamlessly change my restaurant reservations for my two-night stay. The room We stay at the city-facing Luxe Spa Suite. At 235 square metres, it is generously sized – one of the largest I've ever stayed in – and comes with a lavish bathroom, an in-room steam and sauna, jacuzzi, a shower, his and her faucets, a walk-in closet and an outdoor terrace. All the drapes and lights are electronically controlled. But the highlight of staying in the Luxe Spa Suite is having our own personal VIP butler, Khalid, who offers to unpack our luggage. He even escorts us to all our dinner, spa and beach club reservations during our stay. The food The ninth floor of the hotel houses most of the culinary action, and the variety of food and drink offerings make it stand apart from other Five hotels. We have dinner at Ronin, the Michelin Guide-recognised Japanese restaurant, where the chef welcomes guests by theatrically firing the teppanyaki. Although the air conditioning was not optimal, highlights of the night include the melt me Wagyu sandwich with caviar and 24k gold leaf (Dh160), kimchi bob chicken fried rice with sunny side up (Dh95), Wagyu tenderloin toban yaki (Dh280), BBQ yuzu miso black cod (Dh220) and Japanese doughnuts with salted miso caramel (Dh55) for dessert. After dinner, we head to Paradiso, a Barcelona export and former winner of the world's best bar, which opened its first international outpost at Five Luxe JBR. The Dubai outpost has a circus feel thanks to balloons and merry-go-round horses hanging from the ceiling and a carousel bar outside on the terrace overlooking Ain Dubai. Expect to be served some theatrical drinks, a tapas-style menu and groovy music. Five Luxe JBR food - in pictures My favourite dining spot, however, was Tete-a-Tete, a Monte-Carlo-inspired, fine-dining restaurant with a lavender-filled ceiling and glass jewellery boxes for private dining rooms. A perfect date night spot with ocean views, this venue also hosts the Bisou Bisou brunch on Saturdays. For our meal there, chef Daniel Welna recommends several dishes, but my favourites include the grilled prawns (Dh105) and seared foie gras toast (Dh110) for starters, roasted duck (Dh200) and beef short ribs (Dh220) for the mains, and creme caramel (Dh45) and chocolate fondant (Dh45) for dessert. I didn't have the opportunity to dine at sports bar Goose Island Tap House. On Sundays, this venue also hosts a roast brunch. Breakfast scene Breakfast is served beachside at Cielo and offers plenty of choice. There's something for everyone, including an Arabic spread as well as Indian fare. There's also a live station for pancakes, waffles and French toast, cereals and milk, plus a bread station. There is also an impressive pastry selection and an a la carte menu for eggs. The hummus on toast was a personal favourite.A selection of detox shots is also on offer. Avoid going too late in the morning as it gets very busy and it's hard to get a table indoors. Spa and wellness My husband and I try the 60-minute rebalancing massage at the ReFive Spa. Our masseurs Phat and Loppy work magic with their hands and put us to sleep during the treatment (Dh675), which is for deep relaxation. We are offered a detox water before and a fruit tea after the massage. Guests can unwind further in the sauna and indoor pool, while those hoping to keep their fitness on track can work out in a 24/7 indoor or outdoor gym with skyline and sea views. Hotel facilities Playa Pacha, a pool and private beach club, offers Ibiza party vibes. It was a tad too hot for us to indulge in a pool party, but we spot several guests at the spot, where the service is quick. The beach club offers three pools – one at the top reserved for in-house guests and families, one in the middle and one at the bottom right in front of the DJ booth. There are light bites available – think pizzas and Wagyu beef sliders. Despite the party vibes, the property bills itself as family-friendly and is home to a club and pool for children near Cielo restaurant. However, I didn't see too many family guests at the property, instead there were more couples and groups of singles. The hotel also houses a flower shop, a rent-a-car kiosk and a boutique, while the concierge desk arranges tours to Dubai and Abu Dhabi, as well as a range of water sport activities. Accessibility and sustainability Five Luxe JBR offers wheelchair-friendly rooms. The hotel is taking steps towards sustainability by reducing plastic use and installing solar panels to complement water-saving and recycling systems. Our spa suite houses a recycling bin and refillable glass water bottles. No fresh flowers are used at the property. Value for money Room prices start from Dh1,800 ($490), while a Luxe Spa Suite is priced Dh1,950 per night, inclusive of taxes. Check-in is from 3pm and check-out is at noon. As part of a summer promotion, guests can avail of either an early check-in from 10am or late check-out until 4pm and a 20 per cent discount on treatments at ReFive Spa for bookings through the hotel website, valid until September 30.

There aren't many things better for that than conquering your fear of heights at the world's largest indoor skydiving flight chamber. If you're feeling extra adventurous, you can combine indoor climbing with skydiving in the CLYMB Combo ticket (Dhs315) for a double dose of adrenaline. From Dhs235. There are some days when you just want to break stuff from boredom. Enter the Smash Room. Take any lingering frustration out on inanimate objects and break everything in your sight. We can't think of many things more cathartic than that tbh. And now, it is launching a special summer package where you and up to three mates can smash 50 glass items, a washing machine, a printer, a TV and four CPUs to pieces for Dhs1,164.94. If we're talking indoor things to do, then we'd be remiss not not mention the capital's outstanding food scene. Wash away your worries at Yas Waterworld Trust us when we say this is one of the most joyous things you can do in Abu Dhabi. Whooshing down waterslides at however-many-miles-per-hour is possibly the greatest way to alleviate any grown-up boredom your life may have bestowed upon you, and Yas Waterworld is the best place to do just that. The water theme park on Yas Island is one of the largest in the region, with more than 40 splashy rides, various pools and immersive aqua experiences. There are multiple boat rentals in Abu Dhabi, from the super luxe vessels to the casual day boat and, luckily for you, you don't have to do hours of research because we've done the hard bit for you. Play a round of golf at Yas Links Credit: Facebook @TOWERLINKSGC No, you don't have to be a golf pro to play at Yas Links, and yes, it is one of the best ways to have an active day (or morning, if you're trying to avoid the heat). Sitting pretty on the water's edge with dramatic views of the Arabian Gulf, Yas Links Abu Dhabi is the first true links golf course in the Middle East and the home of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship – a Rolex Series event on the DP World Tour. While more experienced golfers tend to make their way to the 18-hole championship course designed by renowned course designer Kyle Phillips, there's a nine-hole par 3 course that's a great shout for newbies. There are also plenty of spots to keep you well fed and watered, including Crafty Fox, a gorgeous gastropub boasting incredible views of the course and the mangroves. At Studio Coe, there are hand-building, wheel-throwing and glazing classes, as well as a number of themed options perfect for kids, where they'll recreate their favourite Pokémon, or carve pumpkins out of clay. It's a (only slightly daunting) dining experience that aims to encourage participants to re-evaluate their approach to food, at Bab Al Qasr's Fresh Basil you will eat in complete darkness, bringing the taste, smell and texture of the food into focus while removing sight. You'll enjoy welcome drinks and canapés before being led into the pitch-black dining room by staff who are fully kitted out with high-tech night vision equipment, allowing you to get to your table without incident. The three-course meal that follows caters to all preferences and intolerances – you just have to let them know in advance – with dishes carefully curated by executive chef Yvan Marclay and head chef Gayan Rupasinghe. It's a profoundly sensory food adventure that makes for one of the most unusual and unique dining experiences in Abu Dhabi. We highly recommend trying it out for yourself. Dhs399. Get the need for speed You don't have to be a Formula 1 driver to get behind the wheel at Yas Marina Circuit. You don't even need to have your own sports car. The circuit puts on loads of driving experiences for sports enthusiasts to try. All you need is a valid UAE license or a license from your home country. Wondering what you can drive? The Aston Martin GT4 is a semi-automatic car that has a sizzling acceleration. For Dhs1,840 you can speed along the track in this state-of-the-art car, which uses biometric technology to capture your individual performance, reading your heart rate and blood pressure as well as the frequency of brain activity, emotions and nervous impulses. The data is then visualised in a 3D avatar and driver persona. You can also whip around the track in a single-seat racing car with the Formula Yas 3000. You'll feel like a professional driver while you power around the track with F1 style paddle gear shift changes. Finally, there's the Alfa Romeo Guilia Quadrifoglio driving experience, where you'll reach speeds of 307 kilometres per hour. Other options include the Caterham Seven, Chevrolet Camaro SS drag racing and the Polaris drift sprint. Location: WOOHOO, Downtown Dubai Rent a Maybach as your taxi If a regular Dubai taxi isn't cutting it for your next trip, arrive in style with a Mercedes Maybach S-Class instead and really make an entrance. You can book ultra luxury cars through the app Wheely, and they show up just like a normal taxi, just with a higher price ofcourse. Well now you can get one for your birthday for a fraction of the price, and even better, you can eat it. Lot's of Dubai bakeries can whip one up for you, however this one (photographed) from Mister Baker looks stylish and delicious. In the Mall of the Emirates, you'll find a full sized ski slope with a chairlift, a zipline, a ski school, and so much more. You can even have lunch or dinner with penguins at Ski Dubai too. Location: Ski Dubai, Mall of the Emirates Get gold from a vending machine In the city of gold, the precious metal is added to so many things like facials and coffees. However actual gold bars are easy to get your hands on too and you can now grab them from a gold vending machine. Locations are in Dubai Mall, the Burj Khalifa, Atlantis the Palm and Souk Madinat Jumeirah. Location: across Dubai Cost: Normal gold rate according to weight Go deep diving, but indoors Deep Dive Dubai holds the record for the world's deepest pool and this underwater attraction is designed to mimic a sunken city. It's such a cool concept and you can experience it regardless of your level from specialised divers to snorkellers. Location: Deep Dive Dubai, Nad Al Sheba Cost: from Dhs400 Dine with fake waves lapping at your feet At 101 Restaurant in One&Only The Palm, the private dining experience is one to be remembered. Enclosed by curved, coral-inspired screens, this intimate space features customisable lighting and a mesmerising LED floor where you can watch the waves but not feel them. Location: 101 Restaurant in One&Only The Palm, Dubai Visit one street where it rains constantly Everything is possible in Dubai, we've established that, but having a singular street where it rains is almost pushing it for us. Head to The World Islands and feel like you're in a European city experiencing a gorgeous summer shower. Bring your umbrella though. Location: Voco Monaco, The World Islands, Dubai Buy a shark in a petshop Yep, you heard that right. We're not telling you to buy a shark, but in Dubai if you wanted to, you could. Cost: Dhs6,000 to Dhs10,000 Visit a life-size A380 plane made of flowers You may have spotted this one already, but if you haven't, it's impressive. Head to the Miracle Garden and see the life-sized plane made from flowers. It's a world record, the largest floral installation. Location: Dubai Miracle Garden, Al Barsha South Cost: Dhs95 for adults, Dhs80 for children Experience a rollercoaster, in a shopping mall Shopping and suddenly fancy an adrenaline hit? Head to Dubai Hills Mall and strap in for The Storm Coaster, the world's fastest vertical-launch indoor rollercoaster. Location: Dubai Hills Mall Cost: from Dhs65 Try a floating cinema It's closed for the summer, but when the weather cools down Floté cinema is a gorgeous spot for an evening date.
