I tried on shapewear from Skims and Spanx. I had no trouble picking my favorite — and it was half the price of its competitor.

First, I tried on a pair from Spanx.
Growing up in the early 2000s, the name Spanx was pretty much synonymous with shapewear.
Founded in 2000 by Sara Blakely (who is now worth an estimated $1.2 billion), the brand sells a variety of shapewear products in different styles and compression levels.
I ordered the SPANXsculpt OnCore high-waisted mid-thigh shorts (80% nylon and 20% elastane) for $78. I really appreciated that the shorts were available in petite sizing since shapewear typically runs long on my 5-foot-2 frame.
It also came in four colors and eight sizes, ranging from XS to 3XL. I ordered a petite large in the "soft nude" colorway.
Overall, I wasn't impressed by the level of compression.
The Spanx website advertised these shorts as providing "targeted tummy control for a flat stomach."
Unfortunately, though, I wasn't impressed by the level of compression these provided.
Did it suck me in a bit and smooth out my stomach? Yes. But did it make a big enough difference for me to justify wearing it all night? Not really.
I also wasn't a fan of the elastic band on top of the shorts that only ran along the back half of my body. I still found the shapewear rolled down along the top as I moved, which was both uncomfortable and a bit annoying.
Otherwise, though, the shapewear was fairly comfortable. The shorts part of the shapewear generally stayed in place on my legs, and I didn't feel the need to pull down or adjust the fabric.
Next, I tried on a similar garment from Kim Kardashian's brand, Skims.
Skims was co-founded by Kim Kardashian in 2019 and has quickly become one of the biggest names in the shapewear market. The brand is now worth billions.
Many of my friends rave about Skims, but I had a disappointing experience with the brand in 2022 when I purchased my first pair of shapewear. Unfortunately, the garment ripped as soon as I put it on.
However, my experience with Skims' customer service was great, and I was sent a new pair at no charge.
With this in mind, I was excited to give Skims another try. So, I bought the sheer, seamless, high-waisted mid-thigh shorts (78% polyamide and 22% elastane) for $38.
This pair came in six color options and nine sizes, ranging from XXS to 4XL. Petite options were not available.
I was pleasantly surprised by the Skims shapewear.
My first thought after pulling these tiny shorts out of the bag was that there was no way in hell I'd be able to squeeze into them. They looked much narrower than the pair I tried on from Spanx, and I was a little nervous I'd rip them.
To my surprise, though, they slipped on effortlessly and were incredibly comfortable.
Like the Spanx pair, these shorts had an elastic band around the top. This time, however, the band stretched the entire width of the garment.
Although it still rolled down a bit in the back, I was pleasantly surprised by how well the shorts stayed in place.
The best part was that, despite offering "midlevel compression," I thought the shapewear smoothed out my belly nicely. I'd be really curious to see what the stronger levels of support can do.
The only downside was that because I'm only 5'2, these "mid-thigh" shorts came close to touching my knees. So, I probably couldn't wear these with a shorter dress.
I'd definitely buy another pair of Skims in the future.
Overall, I was incredibly impressed by Skims' shapewear. Aside from being a bit long on me, these shorts fit beautifully, and I could definitely see myself wearing these comfortably for hours on end.
The best part? The Skims shorts were about $40 cheaper than the Spanx version, which made me feel like I got a great value for the price.
I'd love to see Skims offer petite options in the future. Until then, for shorter dresses, I'd definitely consider adding the brand's high-waisted briefs to my collection.

From ‘jaw bras' to face trainers, experts question the real benefits of face slimming masks

Consumerism has taken nighttime routines to nightmarish levels. Lathering on an occlusive cream and sleeping on a silk pillowcase have been replaced by LED masks, collagen wraps, undereye and lip masks, wrinkle patches, mouth tape and most popularly the V-mask jaw strap. Some refer to them as 'jaw bras,' while others describe them as 'waist trainers for the face.' Regardless of the label, V-masks have been making waves in beauty routines worldwide. Despite their rising popularity and the results sellers promise, they might not provide the permanent results many hope for. For beauty enthusiasts or even casual social media users, it's nearly impossible to scroll through TikTok without encountering a 'morning shed' video. Creators punt products and sometimes affiliate links by sharing their nighttime rituals, as well as the morning aftermath of taking them off, layer by layer. These beauty products have taken over platforms under hashtags like #Vline, #ChinStrap, and #VfaceMask, among others, with related video posts surging on social media, reflecting their growing prominence in the beauty community. According to dedicated users who swear by these masks, they claim they offer multiple benefits, from contouring the face and tightening the jawline to reducing the appearance of a double chin. Even celebrities are jumping on the trend. Kim Kardashian recently made headlines by blending beauty with fashion in her shapewear line, Skims. She launched her first beauty-style product, the Seamless Sculpt Face Wrap, which instantly sold out, sparking mixed opinions online. View this post on Instagram A post shared by SKIMS (@skims) According to Skims, this product features 'signature sculpting fabric' and 'collagen yarns for ultra-soft jaw support.' Inspired by compression bandages used post-facelift surgery, the face wrap retails for $48 USD (upwards of R800). While the product makes claims like 'may help improve jawline definition,' its true benefits remain somewhat vague. Even though many swear by V-masks, experts are sceptical. Professor Chrysis Sofianos, a plastic surgeon and expert in aesthetic and reconstructive surgery, explained the function of these trendy masks. 'They are widely marketed as non-invasive tools to enhance facial contour, reduce puffiness, and promote a more defined jawline,' he said. Further explaining, he added, 'They often apply mild compression, temporarily reducing fluid retention and giving the appearance of a slimmer face.' He also emphasised that these benefits are short-lived. 'Some masks also include ingredients like caffeine, collagen, or botanical extracts, which may contribute to skin hydration and a temporary tightening effect,' he told News24. It's important to note that while these masks may offer a short-term cosmetic improvement, there is limited scientific evidence to support their efficacy in altering facial fat distribution or muscle tone in any meaningful or lasting way. In addition to promises of facial contouring, these masks are said to reduce wrinkles and fine lines, giving a youthful appearance. They are also marketed to promote better sleep by potentially reducing snoring. 'Some face masks, particularly those marketed for jaw support or facial compression, claim to aid in reducing snoring by maintaining jaw position during sleep. In theory, these masks may help keep the mouth closed, thereby encouraging nasal breathing and reducing soft tissue vibration in the throat. 'However, the clinical benefit in treating snoring or sleep apnoea is minimal and not well supported by scientific research,' Sofianos explained. On a cautionary note, he advised those struggling with snoring or sleep-disordered breathing to seek professional help. 'It's advisable to seek formal evaluation by a healthcare professional,' he said. 'Proper diagnosis and management, including positional therapy, oral appliances, or CPAP, offer far more effective and evidence-based outcomes.'

Does Kim Kardashian's Skims Face Shapewear Actually Work? Doctors Weigh In

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Kim Kardashian's new SKIMS shapewear has already sold out online, but doctors suggest people are wasting their money. Newsweek contacted SKIMS for comment on Friday via email outside regular working hours. The Context The reality TV star and business couple Jens and Emma Grede launched SKIMS in 2019 to create more shapewear options and inclusivity. Sizes range from XXS through XXXXXL. In 2022, it was featured on the Time 100 Most Influential Companies list. "It started off with simply finding shapewear that was a skin tone that would match my color," Kardashian told Time in a 2023 interview about the brand's birth. "I used to take my shapewear and dye it with tea bags and coffee in the bathtub." What To Know On Tuesday, SKIMS revealed a new shapewear product called the "Seamless Sculpt Face Wrap." According to SKIMS website, the wrap is their "first-ever face innovation." "This must-have face wrap boasts our signature sculpting fabric and features collagen yarns for ultra-soft jaw support," the product description states. "Velcro closures at the top and nape of the neck allow for easy, everyday wear." The wrap retails for $48 and comes in two colors: clay and cocoa. It is sold out online at time of writing. Kim Kardashian celebrates the launch of SKIMS at Nordstrom NYC on February 5, 2020 in New York City. Kim Kardashian celebrates the launch of SKIMS at Nordstrom NYC on February 5, 2020 in New York Nordstrom Boston facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Spiegel—who boasts 38,800 followers on TikTok and an additional 35,300 on Instagram—said the new item is "just clever marketing" and "won't tighten your skin, stimulate collagen, or create lasting changes to your face." "I'm afraid KK [Kim Kardashian], you're going to lose a lot of credibility on this one," he said in a video posted to social media. "If you have collagen yarns, what does that mean? It's not going through your skin." In the caption of the clip, Dr. Spiegel added that "real collagen stimulation comes from proven treatments like lasers, microneedling, and injectables—not from wearing a piece of fabric." "Don't fall for the hype," he warned. Dr. Naomi McCullum, an Australian cosmetic practitioner and owner of The Manse clinics, agreed. "These face wraps are almost identical to post-surgical garments used for neck liposuction and neck lifts," she told Elle Australia in an article published on Thursday. "In terms of function, I really can't see any skin benefits from collagen yarns sitting on top of the skin—and these seem to be a combination of synthetic fabrics—and you can't get a slimmer jawline with simple compression." What People Are Saying Anthony Hopkins, seemingly reprising his role as Hannibal Lecter, had nothing but positive things to say about the wrap, in a video posted to Instagram this week: "Hello Kim, I'm already feeling 10 years younger." What Happens Next It's unclear if the Seamless Sculpt Face Wrap will be restocked online.
