Kentucky baseball swept by Vanderbilt to close the regular season
The Kentucky Wildcats baseball team played well against the Oklahoma Sooners just a week ago, sweeping them in three games. The went into their season ending series versus Vanderbilt with momentum on their side.
Unfortunately, Kentucky had ninth inning leads in both of the first two games only to lose on walk-off homeruns. On Saturday, in the finale, the Commodores wouldn't need a walk-off.
The Wildcats opened the scoring once again. Hudson Brown and Tyler Bell each hit solo homers in the third inning to take the lead. They added another in the fourth to go up 3-0. Things went awry in the sixth, though, when Vandy tied it at three. In the seventh, they tacked on two more and would go on to win it 5-3.
Kentucky scored three runs, but were held to just five hits. Outside of two innings, they also pitched pretty well.
That finishes the regular season for the Wildcats. Now, they'll wait and see if they make the NCAA Tournament, and where they'll play if they do.

Spurs' Carter Bryant honors family member with jersey number selection
Rookie Carter Bryant will begin his career in the NBA with the San Antonio Spurs with a new jersey number after wearing No. 9 as a freshman last season at Arizona. Bryant wore it in various events before joining the Wildcats, such as the McDonald's All-American Game and the Pangos All-American Camp. He was forced to change it upon joining the Spurs, with it retired to honor Hall of Famer Tony Parker. The 14th pick also wore a few other numbers, though each one was taken on the team. He opted to go with No. 11, which is the same number his uncle wore. "I wanted nine," Bryant said. "Obviously, Tony Parker has nine retired. (De'Aaron) Fox has four. Steph Castle has five. Dylan (Harper) got two. I was a Kawhi fan, so I was trying to get the two. Vic (Wembanyama) got one, so then I went through all of the numbers I liked and which ones looked good. My uncle ended up wearing No. 11 playing pro volleyball overseas, so I went with 11." Bryant helped the Wildcats to the Sweet 16, averaging 6.5 points, 4.1 rebounds and one assist on 37.1% shooting from 3-point range. He scored in double figures five times, including a season-high-tying 14 points, three rebounds, two steals and two blocks on Jan. 27. The 19-year-old logged six appearances with the Spurs in summer league, averaging 7.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.7 blocks and 1.2 assists on 28.6% shooting from the field. He wrapped up his stay with a 16-point, five-rebound performance on July 17. Bryant has ingratiated himself well within the local community after volunteering at a couple of events this offseason. The team was excited to add him and is eager to watch him hit the court. SEC's longest-tenured coach, Mark Stoops back to rebuilding at Kentucky
Mark Stoops faces his biggest challenge at Kentucky going into his 13th season as the longest-tenured coach in the Southeastern Conference. The Wildcats are coming off a 4-8 record that is their worst since going 2-10 in Stoops' debut season in 2013. Stoops also lost associate head coach Vince Marrow, who had been with him since he came to Kentucky, to in-state rival Louisville in June. Stoops believes he's looked at what went wrong to fix everything. 'We didn't want to just move past it,' Stoops said. 'We had to look at everything, turn over every stone and make sure that we were doing things to the best of our ability. I feel like we've done that.' Stoops has nine starters back. He also went into the transfer portal for 26 more along with 11 incoming freshmen. Stoops' future The coach should be secure at Kentucky with the extension he got in November 2022 enough to keep him around. Stoops hasn't had back-to-back losing seasons since his first three at Kentucky, and he would be due about $37.5 million within two months if officials wanted to make a coaching change. Stoops also likes what Kentucky has done investing in football. He said it feels the Wildcats are on the same playing field as other programs with funding and support for the first time in his tenure. Painful loss Marrow is considered one of the top recruiters in college football. When he left Kentucky, he was Stoops' associate head coach since 2019 and also the recruiting coordinator and NFL liaison. Louisville made him executive director of player personnel and recruiting. When Louisville announced the hiring, Marrow said his ultimate goal is winning a national championship. That's a tough path for Kentucky in the 16-team SEC. New QB Brock Vandagriff retired from football after last season, and Cutter Boley is back after appearing in four games with one start last season. That leaves a big starting job open. Stoops brought in Zach Calzada who led the Football Championship Series with 35 touchdown passes and 3,791 yards passing at Incarnate Word last season. The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Calada is 23-9 as a starter, spending 2022 at AUburn and starting his career at Texas A&M. Whoever wins the job will be helped by having three starters back on the offensive line, though Kentucky needs a new starting center and left tackle. The schedule The Wildcats open with Toledo on Aug. 30 followed by two more home games, including No. 21 Mississippi on Sept. 6. The slate gets tough with a trip to No. 13 South Carolina on Sept. 27 and No. 5 Georgia on Oct. 4. Another open date offers a break before hosting top-ranked Texas on Oct. 18 followed by No. 24 Tennessee and Florida is the final SEC home game Nov. 8. Kentucky goes to Auburn on Nov. 1 and Vanderbilt on Nov. 22 before the regular season finale Nov. 29 at Louisville.

NCAA Softball Tournament reportedly to seed 32 teams beginning with 2026 tournament
Following another exciting college softball season, the NCAA is doubling the number of teams it will seed in the 2025 NCAA Tournament. According to Softball America, softball will follow the format of college volleyball and women's soccer with the seeding of 32 teams. Only the top 16 seeds, which hosted the regional, were previously seeded. In theory, the committee is seeking to reward the top seeds with "easier" matchups. REQUIRED READING: Texas Longhorns power couple pushes each other in football, softball However, to protect teams from having to travel too much for regionals, the 1-32 seedings will not be straight up to protect 400-mile geographic proximity parameters and avoid same-conference matchups in the regionals. The No. 1-4 national seeds will play seeds Nos. 29-32; however, an adjustment will be made if it pairs two conference opponents who are scheduled to meet one another. There will not be a seeding for the rest of the 64-team field.
