Peel police say repeat drunk driver out on bail after Brampton crash should be 'behind bars right now'

A man arrested for impaired driving after a four-vehicle collision in Brampton, Ont., over the weekend is a repeat offender who has since been released on bail, Peel police say. The collision happened Saturday afternoon at the intersection of Highway 50 and Coleraine Drive. Multiple injuries were reported, including a 21-year-old man who remains in "unstable, critical condition and is anticipated to have long-term life-altering injuries," police said in a Thursday news release. A 58-year-old Mississauga man was arrested at the scene and has since been charged with multiple offences, including impaired driving. A judge released him on bail this week, police said, on condition the man — a five-time repeat offender already subject to three lifetime driving prohibitions — not drive. Peel police Const. Tyler Bell said Thursday that he couldn't help but shake his head when he looked at the man's driving record. "This individual has blatant disregard of any court orders, he obviously has a problem, and that problem is putting the public at risk," Bell told CBC Toronto. "The only safe place for the members of the community is behind bars right now." Two other people were taken to hospital with injuries after the crash, Peel paramedics said.

Peel Regional Police say officers responded to the shooting in an industrial complex at 181 Rutherford Rd. S. – northeast of Kennedy Rd. and Steeles Ave. E. – shortly before 5:45 p.m. and found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. 'He was transported to a trauma center where he underwent emergency surgery but sadly was pronounced deceased,' Const. Tyler Bell told reporters at the scene Friday night. He said the victim, whose name was not immediately released, is believed to have been either an owner or an employee of the business and that it appears he was 'targeted.' 'Whether or not this individual was the intended target, that's always part of the ongoing investigation,' Bell said, explaining the man was shot inside of the auto repair shop. He said the area was busy when the gunfire erupted but 'miraculously' nobody else was injured. 'At any given time, we've seen tragic circumstances where people are caught in the crossfire of these acts, so it's obviously concerning,' Bell said. 'I understand that's top of mind, especially with the most recent press conference that we've put out,' he said, referring to the 18 arrests Peel cops announced Monday when they revealed details of Project Outsource. 'Whether or not it's related at this point, it's certainly possible, something that we'll be looking into for sure,' Bell said. cdoucette@ @sundoucette Columnists Toronto & GTA Editorial Cartoons Columnists Sunshine Girls

Kentucky baseball swept by Vanderbilt to close the regular season

Kentucky baseball swept by Vanderbilt to close the regular season The Kentucky Wildcats baseball team played well against the Oklahoma Sooners just a week ago, sweeping them in three games. The went into their season ending series versus Vanderbilt with momentum on their side. Unfortunately, Kentucky had ninth inning leads in both of the first two games only to lose on walk-off homeruns. On Saturday, in the finale, the Commodores wouldn't need a walk-off. The Wildcats opened the scoring once again. Hudson Brown and Tyler Bell each hit solo homers in the third inning to take the lead. They added another in the fourth to go up 3-0. Things went awry in the sixth, though, when Vandy tied it at three. In the seventh, they tacked on two more and would go on to win it 5-3. Kentucky scored three runs, but were held to just five hits. Outside of two innings, they also pitched pretty well. That finishes the regular season for the Wildcats. Now, they'll wait and see if they make the NCAA Tournament, and where they'll play if they do.
