(KRMB) is in a fix with AP and Telangana taking opposite sides with regard to water releases from the Nagarjuna Sagar project. Andhra Pradesh sent an SoS to KRMB seeking release of 10 tmc ft of water from the Nagarjuna Sagar project to meet
drinking water needs
in Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam and Palnadu districts.
The AP govt explained that almost all the drinking water tanks in upland areas of several districts under the Nagarjuna Sagar project were dried up and release of water is the only way to meet the drinking water needs. After sending a formal request, AP govt advisor (water resources) M Venkateswar Rao called KRMB chairman Atul Jain over phone and explained the situation. He requested the KRMB chairman to take a favourable decision at the earliest in view of the emergency.
Sources said that the KRMB chairman suggested the govt advisor to send a detailed proposal as to how many tanks were located along the canal and their capacities. Although KRMB looked positive on the issue, opposition from Telangana is believed to have delayed the release. Sources said that the Telangana govt informed the KRMB chairman that any fresh release from Nagarjuna Sagar project will dip levels below the Dead Storage Level (DSL), which would force it to depend on lift irrigation to pump water for Hyderabad's drinking water needs.

Telangana demanded that AP should bear the electricity charges of its lift irrigation scheme in case KRMB wanted to release water to AP. However, AP turned down the proposal saying it was seeking water from its rightful share and there is no question of payment of electricity charges towards usage of lift irrigation scheme.

Hyderabad: Deputy chief minister Bhatti Vikramarka on Saturday said the Congress govt will not allow the AP govt to proceed with its Godavari-Banakacherla project until Telangana completes all its pending irrigation projects in the basin area and secures its rightful share of river water. The previous BRS govt redesigned projects only to loot the state treasury," Bhatti alleged. Telemetry on Krishna River approved after Telangana's push: Minister Uttam Kumar
Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have agreed to constitute a committee of senior officials and technical experts to identify and resolve all pending water-related issues, including usage patterns, project allocations and the management of river systems. The agreement was reached during a meeting between Chief Ministers A. Revanth Reddy and N. Chandrababu Naidu, convened by Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil in New Delhi on Wednesday. During a media briefing after the meeting in the presence of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy said that both States had reached a consensus on four major decisions aimed at addressing long-standing disputes. A key outcome was the decision to install telemetry instruments at all water-drawing points along the Krishna River and its canal systems. 'We have assured immediate release of funds to the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) to expedite the installation. This will bring transparency and accountability in measuring water usage at each off-take point. We have decided to complete the work on a war-footing basis,' Mr. Uttam Kumar Reddy said, adding that Krishna River usage had long been a bone of contention between the two States. On the issue of the Srisailam Dam's structural integrity, the Andhra Pradesh government agreed to take up urgent repairs and rehabilitation work. 'The dam, which has shown signs of wear — particularly in the plunge pool area — will now be restored under the supervision of the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA). The Union government has directed Andhra Pradesh to undertake the work on priority since the Srisailam Dam falls within their jurisdiction. Whatever needs to be done, whether in the plunge pool or other parts of the dam requiring urgent attention, will be taken up immediately,' he said. Regarding the location of the river management board offices, it was decided that the Godavari River Management Board (GRMB) will be headquartered in Hyderabad, while the KRMB will function from Andhra Pradesh. 'This decision is in line with the earlier understanding reached at the Apex Council meeting in 2020, and the provisions of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act were ratified at the meeting,' the Minister said. The meeting was attended by senior officials from both States, Congress MPs, including Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Mallu Ravi, and representatives of the Union Jal Shakti Ministry.

Minister Nimmala Ramanaidu hails KL Rao as visionary on birth anniversary
VIJAYAWADA: Water Resources Minister Nimmala Ramanaidu paid rich tributes to KL Rao, calling him a visionary engineer who championed river interlinking for India's development over 50 years ago. Speaking at KL Rao's 124th birth anniversary celebrations in Vijayawada on Tuesday, Nimmala lauded KL Rao's pivotal contributions to iconic irrigation projects like Srisailam, Nagarjuna Sagar and Hirakud, describing them as invaluable to India's irrigation landscape. He highlighted Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu's efforts to advance KL Rao's vision, particularly through the Pattiseema Lift Irrigation Scheme, which interlinked the Godavari and Krishna rivers at a cost of Rs 1,300 crore during the previous TDP regime (2014-19) generating Rs 50,000 crore wealth. He affirmed the coalition government's commitment to completing Polavaram by December 2027, ensuring water supply to North Andhra and Rayalaseema. The plan includes harnessing 200 TMC of 3,000 TMC of Godavari water that flows into the sea per annum, aiming to irrigate every acre in the State. Nimmala emphasised that irrigation is a service to farmers, calling it a matter of pride for the sector. He detailed the TDP's past investments in water resources, projects, and lift irrigation schemes across Rayalaseema, Coastal Andhra, and North Andhra, contrasting them with the 'destructive' policies of the YSRCP regime.
