Radhika Apte expresses challenges for new mothers in film industry: 'I don't know how I am going to navigate it'

Radhika Apte , who announced her pregnancy last year at the BAFTA Awards, now opened up about the difficulties new mothers face in the demanding film industry. Her British film, Karan Kandhari's black comedy Sister Midnight, which premiered at Cannes last May, is now releasing in India, and Apte's daughter is six months old. Short maternity leave and Industry realities Radhika had a remarkably short "maternity leave," returning to work just a week after her daughter's birth. Last December, she even shared a picture of herself attending a virtual work meeting while breastfeeding, highlighting her immediate return to professional life. While virtually speaking to SCREEN from London, Apte candidly addressed whether the film industry is supportive of new mothers. "I don't think they are. I don't know how I'm going to navigate that going ahead," she confessed. Her statement comes amid a broader discussion within the industry, with reports suggesting actors like Deepika Padukone potentially walking out of films over concerns like requesting eight-hour shifts post-pregnancy. While actor-producer Ajay Devgn recently defended the industry, claiming shorter shifts are now common for everyone, Apte emphasized the unique challenges for new mothers. ZAROTRAVEL® КУПИ СЕГА Undo "It's really difficult to work in our film industry, given the number of hours and how we film generally, and the time for which we don't get to see the child. So I guess I'll just have to figure it out now," she explained. This challenge is compounded by Apte's long-standing practice of dividing her time between India and London. A shifting focus from acting to screenwriting Even before embracing motherhood, Radhika found herself dissatisfied with the acting roles coming her way, which led her to explore screenwriting. She previously directed the short film The Sleepwalkers, starring Gulshan Devaiah and Shahana Goswami, available on MUBI. "I'm tired of acting because you don't necessarily get the kind of work you want. I'm tired of doing the same thing or doing things just for the sake of it," she admitted, explaining her decision to be more selective. Apte revealed that writing began out of this frustration, allowing her to explore subjects that weren't offered to her as an actor. She unexpectedly found joy in the process, inspiring her to delve deeper into it. On the acting front, Radhika will next be seen in Dharmaraj Shetty's revenge thriller show Akka on Netflix India and Justin Lin's American film Last Days, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this year. Embracing character transformation beyond stereotypes Discussing her role as Uma in Sister Midnight, Apte highlighted her fascination with the character, a "small-town misfit who became an accidental outlaw." Uma enters an arranged marriage and undergoes a bizarre, supernatural transformation. When asked if it was fun to break out of the "demure homemaker mould" often seen in roles like her character in Pad Man, Apte clarified her artistic approach. "There's nothing wrong with playing a demure homemaker. It was never my intention to play a badass. It's about the character, the arc, and the story you're trying to tell," she stated. She emphasized the relatability of Uma's journey: "The emotional transformation is the acceptance of who she is. She discovers herself after becoming an outlaw. That self-discovery is very relatable. It's not about womanhood. It's applicable to any individual who finds discomfort in adjusting to a structure or a society.' Krishna Water Management Board in a fix as Telangana opposes water release from Nagarjuna Sagar to Andhra Pradesh

1 2 Vijayawada: The Krishna Water Management Board (KRMB) is in a fix with AP and Telangana taking opposite sides with regard to water releases from the Nagarjuna Sagar project. Andhra Pradesh sent an SoS to KRMB seeking release of 10 tmc ft of water from the Nagarjuna Sagar project to meet drinking water needs in Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam and Palnadu districts. The AP govt explained that almost all the drinking water tanks in upland areas of several districts under the Nagarjuna Sagar project were dried up and release of water is the only way to meet the drinking water needs. After sending a formal request, AP govt advisor (water resources) M Venkateswar Rao called KRMB chairman Atul Jain over phone and explained the situation. He requested the KRMB chairman to take a favourable decision at the earliest in view of the emergency. Sources said that the KRMB chairman suggested the govt advisor to send a detailed proposal as to how many tanks were located along the canal and their capacities. Although KRMB looked positive on the issue, opposition from Telangana is believed to have delayed the release. Sources said that the Telangana govt informed the KRMB chairman that any fresh release from Nagarjuna Sagar project will dip levels below the Dead Storage Level (DSL), which would force it to depend on lift irrigation to pump water for Hyderabad's drinking water needs. However, AP turned down the proposal saying it was seeking water from its rightful share and there is no question of payment of electricity charges towards usage of lift irrigation scheme.

Pest attack hits mango crop in UP, quality at risk

1 2 3 Lucknow: A sour deal awaits mango lovers this season as a widespread pest attack has affected crops in various parts of Uttar Pradesh. The rising temperatures are believed to be contributing to the pest issue, which can lead to scarring, reduced market value and compromised taste. The attack comes at a critical time when mangoes are growing in size, making them more vulnerable to damage. Despite the fruit size being better than previous years, the pests — including the 'dudwa' or paired fruit borer and 'cutter' (humpback caterpillar or semilooper) — are affecting mangoes in Malihabad and other parts of the state, potentially impacting the fruit's quality and yield. Director, Central Institute for Subtropical Horticulture (CISH), T Damodaran, said that while mango leaves have hardened by now, insects are laying eggs on fruits, which are still developing, or on their stalks. "These pests thrive when temperatures rise. It was the trend last year also," he said, adding that fruits covered with protective bags are at a lower risk. For farmers who cannot afford bagging of fruits, as a single piece may cost around Rs 20, scientists recommend insecticides and sprays, but at specific spots where pests are active, or they may scatter for a while and come back again. Like semilooper, which releases a fine thread from its mouth and hangs down from the tree when disturbed by strong winds, rain or pesticides. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Мъжки сандали, създадени за комфорт и издръжливост. ZAROTRAVEL® КУПИ СЕГА Undo While the larvae may die in the process, the larger insects may crawl back. There is, therefore, the need to spray on tree trunks as well. The paired fruit borer is active between two mangoes or within fruit clusters, laying eggs and multiplying at the junction where two fruits touch each other, while semilooper is laying eggs on fruits which have tender skin and stalks. The larvae scrape and feed on the skin of the fruit, leaving it scarred and with holes, said the director. The infestation grows with a rise in temperature, and if not controlled early, it becomes difficult to manage, he added. However, some precautions can keep them away, like bagging the fruits, light but frequent irrigation, mulching the tree basin with dried leaves and 'canopy management' of old trees so that their height is reduced and they are easier to manage.
