KUALA LUMPUR: Asean has taken steps to reform the grouping by not only increasing trade among the member countries but also the use of local currencies in trade as a concrete way toward a more stable financial system free of unilateral domination, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today. "Of course, we are not talking about de-dollarisation yet, that's still a long way to go. But at least we are trying. Anwar stressed that Southeast Asian nations must uphold the principle of centrality, befriending all and supporting just causes, while moving beyond rhetoric, political platitudes and empty statements through concrete action. He also noted that emerging economies are gaining strength in areas such as aviation, technology, artificial intelligence and food innovation. "I believe that this attempt by BRICS will be of some significant success that would alter and cause a change in the course of the history of mankind. "We often discuss similar issues within Asean. We must be cohesive and speak as one based on multilateral arrangements," said Anwar. The Prime Minister also emphasised that BRICS and Asean members must continue to strengthen strategic cooperation, including enhancing cross-regional trade and investment for the shared benefit of developing countries.

Cambodia sees 16 per cent rise in international air passengers in first half of 2025
PHNOM PENH (Xinhua): Cambodia has recorded a total of 3.42 million international air passengers in the first half of 2025, a year-on-year increase of 16 per cent, said an official report on Saturday. Released by the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA), the report said that during the January-June period this year, most air travelers to the kingdom were from China, Thailand, Vietnam, South Korea, and Japan. SSCA's Secretary of State and spokesperson Sinn Chanserey Vutha said the kingdom is forecast to handle about 7.5 million air passengers in the entirety of 2025, an expected increase of 20 percent from 6.24 million in 2024. He was confident that the Siem Reap Angkor International Airport, which was put into official use in November 2023, and the Techo International Airport, which is scheduled to open to official operation in September 2025, would help attract more international airlines and passengers to Cambodia. "The two new international airports are capable of handling the landing of almost all kinds of aircraft from across the world, so I believe that they will be able to attract more reputable international airlines to operate direct flights to Cambodia," he told Xinhua. The Southeast Asian country currently has three international airports in operation. Cambodia and Japan launch first phase of cross-border QR code payment linkage
PHNOM PENH (Xinhua): Cambodia and Japan have launched the first phase of cross-border QR code payment connection, said a press release from the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC). NBC's Governor Chea Serey presided over the launch event in Osaka, Japan. "This official launch will allow Cambodian citizens to experience the efficient, convenient, and seamless cross-border payment by using the Bakong app or Mobile banking apps to scan JPQR codes in Japan," the press release said. "This initiative underscores Cambodia's advancement in establishing a digital infrastructure for cross-border transactions, fostering collaboration and mutual growth," it added. The second phase, which will be launched later, will enable Japanese users to pay in Cambodia by scanning KHQR. - Xinhua
