Matt Lucas quits show mid performance after falling ill

Daily Record17-05-2025

The BBC comedy legend updated his fans on Instagram about his condition.
Matt Lucas has given his fans a health update over social media after he had to pull out of Les Miserables mid-performance after falling ill. The comedy legend is currently touring in the 2025 international area tour of Les Misérables: The Arena Spectacular.
The show is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the original London production and Matt is playing the role of criminal and brute Monsieur Thénardier. The show is currently on its Australia leg of the tour where the quick cast change was forced to occur.

On May 14, Matt had to leave the Sydney theatre due to health concerns while his understudy took over the role, reports the Mirror. The 51-year-old took to Instagram on Friday to update his 405,000 followers on his health.

He wrote: "I've been having a magical time in Les Misérables in arenas across Sydney and Melbourne," he wrote. "In over 30 years, I've never had to bow out of a performance, but tonight, as I was singing Master Of The House, I could feel my voice deserting me.
"So if Thénardier looked very different in act two, that was because the amazing Connor James took over. I am now in bed resting up, and I hope to be back on stage soon."
His fans have gone on to fill the comments section of his post with well wishes, as one person wrote: "Aw take care of yourself matt, rest yourself and come back strong again!"
His former Great British Bake Off co-host Noel Fielding also wrote: "Get well soon lovely," while former EastEnders and Once Upon A Time star Sean Maguire commented: "I hope you feel better soon, my dear friend. X."
Gail McKinnion, from Brave and Doctors, went on to say: "Sorry to hear you are feeling poorly. Rest up, you'll be fighting fit in no time x."

Matt first shot to fame over 20 years ago with David Walliams through their hit show Little Britain. The comedic duo has revealed earlier this year that they are now working together on a new project - a podcast called Making a Scene.
The pair have since released regular episodes, with some featuring interviews with huge stars such as Simon Pegg and Daisy May Cooper.

David and Matt first met at the National Youth Theatre in the early 90s, where they quickly shared a bond over comedy and impressions. In 1999, the pair marked one of their first collaborations on Rock Profile, which lead to other TV parts.

However, this all led to the duo finally making it big with Little Britain in 2003. Running until 2006, the sketch show initially aired on BBC Three before moving to BBC One. However, the show has faced backlash in recent years, with Ofcom branding some sketches as being "explicitly racist and outdated" back in 2023.

Last year, David teased fans with the idea of bringing back Little Britain, sharing that he thought that offence and shock "can actually be quite exciting".
He added: "The comedy I grew up with, whether it's Mel Brooks or Monty Python... I love being shocked. I mean, offence is a bit of a different thing, isn't it, and as a white, middle aged man things don't offend you in the same way as they might if you were a member of a minority group.
"But at the same time, I think comedy has got to be playful. And the thing is, if you're worried every time you make a joke… You have half a second to decide with the thing you're going to say, you should say or not."

Alison wore a huge fake belly under a figure hugging dress as she showcased her moves to Starrkeisha's viral song Baby Mama. The broadcaster, who is already mum to son Aidan, 20, whom she shares with ex-husband, captioned the post: "Lots of AI stories online about me being pregnant. "I can confirm I am not having a baby as I'm not sure my 50 year old womb could take it . "However I do think we should all dance like Meghan!!" Of course, it wasn't long before Alison's followers rushed to post in the comments. One said: "Just another reason to love Alison." Another added: "I love this so much! And double yes to Meghan!." "Such a Queen," said another. While one fan gushed: "YOU ARE AMAZING ALISON X." Alison Hammond shows off 11 stone weight loss in leggings as she hits the gym for gruelling workout Meghan, 43, released the 89-second clip of her and Prince Harry to her three million followers on Instagram after earlier posting unseen photos of her daughter. It showed the heavily pregnant Meghan making rowing movements and shimmying her shoulders beside the hospital bed. Prince Harry also shuffles into view in a hoodie to the strains of then-viral pregnancy hit The Baby Momma Dance. But the clip sparked bizarre claims from conspiracy theorists, who questioned whether the baby bump was real. The wild online speculation cruelly suggested that Meghan wasn't pregnant at all and was in fact wearing a prosthetic pregnant belly or "moonbump". Some went even further with groundless claims that the video was faked, made on a film set or even generated by AI. Meanwhile, Alison who is already on nearly every channel, making programmes about baking, travel, dogs and hobnobbing with celebrities - has bagged yet another show. The TV celebrity will this summer front new Channel 4 project Your Song. In the series she will tour Britain giving ordinary members of the public the chance to perform a track which has special meaning to them. But Alison will have to squeeze her new job into her schedule. As well as appearing soon on Channel 4's Bake Off and Celebrity Gogglebox, for the BBC she's just made travel series Florida Unpacked and interview show Alison Hammond's Big Weekend for the BBC. BREAKING NEWS Love Island USA cast member breaks silence after being kicked off show due to past racist slurs

Axed Love Island USA contestant Yulissa Escobar has broken her silence after being removed from the show over her past use of racist slurs. Escobar, 27, was released from the reality TV show off camera during only the second episode, before the rest of the contestants woke up for the day. Clips of Escobar using the N-word while discussing ex-boyfriends surfaced on Reddit and fans were irate, commenting on her Instagram that they would vote her off at the first opportunity. Now Escobar has taken to Instagram to apologize for using the slurs in a post captioned: 'Owning my mistakes, speaking my truth.' She wrote: 'First, I want to apologize for using a word I had no right in using. 'Podcast clips from years ago have recently resurfaced, and I want to address it directly. 'In those clips, I used a word I never should've used, a racial slur. I used it ignorantly, not fully understanding the weight, history, or pain behind it. I wasn't trying to be offensive or harmful, but I recognize now that intention doesn't excuse impact. And the impact of that word is real. It's tied to generations of trauma, and it is not mine to use. 'At the time, I was speaking casually in conversation, not thinking deeply or critically about what I was saying. But that doesn't take away from how wrong it was. The truth is, I didn't know better then, but I do now. I've taken the time to reflect, to learn, and to grow from that moment. 'I've changed a lot since then, not just in how I speak, but in how I show up, how I carry myself, and how I honor the experiences of others. Growth means recognizing when you were wrong, even if it's uncomfortable, and choosing to move forward with humility and accountability. 'There have also been fake statements circulating, things written or said by others that don't reflect me or my heart. I want to clarify that this is my voice and my words. I don't need anyone to speak for me. I'm choosing to speak for myself because I take full ownership of my actions. Do not listen to the fake statements. This is my official statement. This is me, speaking directly to you. 'To those who are disappointed or offended, I understand and I apologize. 'I am sorry. As the islanders were waking up, the narrator of the show Iain Stirling announced: 'Yulissa has left the villa.' Yulissa was paired up with Ace Greene who is now single following her exit. One comment on the Reddit thread pointed out: 'How [the f***] did producers let this slide? They for SURE saw this.' Another user replied: 'Yeah, if people on this sub can find this in a few days, casting should have DEFINITELY found this. So either they're not looking into people enough or they're choosing to let this stuff slide. Not sure which is worse.' The remaining season seven Islanders include: Chelley Bissainthe, Huda Mustafa, Belle-A Walker, Olandria Carthen, Greene, and Taylor Williams. The comments on Yulissa's Instagram will be a surprise to her when she gets back from Fiji. ''yulissa has left the villa' LMFAOOOO,' one fan wrote, while another expressed,' WE WON SHES GONE!' The strong reaction continued in that theme, with someone else saying: 'Love Island stood on business and I love that.' Just a day before her exit, the budding reality star had been happily promoting the show on her Instagram. In one post, she wrote, 'It's my unapologetic year! And I'm choosing me, every time. Loud, soft, sweet, savage—whatever I feel like being.' In other Love Island-related posts, Yulissa shilled for votes to stay in the Villa. 'Say hello to your newest official islander on Love Island USA Season 7. Straight from Miami and headed to the villa! She's all about kindness, connection, and staying true to who she is,' one post was captioned 'We can't wait for you to get to know her heart, her humor, and everything in between. Make sure you download love island app to vote for Yulissa!' 'Can she see these comments?? Or not yet cause she in the island? Honestly IDC but how hilarious when she comes out thinking she got all these fans but she's getting cancelled,' one person commented on that post. Yulissa isn't the only Love Island USA contestant to face controversy. Season 7 contestant Austin Shepard has faced controversy for liking TikTok content supporting Donald Trump. Unlike Yulissa, Austin has remained in the villa. The remaining female contestants in the villa include Chelley Bissainthe, Huda Mustafa, Belle-A Walker, and Olandria Carthen. The guys vying for love are Ace Greene, Taylor Williams, Nicolas Vansteenberghe and Jeremiah Brown. The show also introduced two early bombshells: Cierra Ortega and Charlie Georgiou. Bombshells are a new Islander who enters the villa with the intention of potentially disrupting existing relationships and forming new ones. "Islanders will couple up to face brand new heart-racing challenges and bigger twists and turns than ever before,' the show's logline reads. The contestants are also vying for a $100,000 prized. On Love Island USA, a spinoff of Love Island UK, singles live together in a villa for about two months and couple up with the islander they are most attracted to.

Freddy Brazier announces he's going to rehab to 'get clean' after sad fallout with dad

Freddy Brazier, 20, has revealed he's going to rehab in Spain to get clean after battling a smoking addiction since age 12 Freddy Brazier has announced he is heading to rehab in Spain as he battles a long-standing addiction. The 20-year-old, youngest son of Jeff Brazier and the late Jade Goody, revealed he has been addicted to smoking since the age of 12 and is now taking steps to 'get clean.' The move follows reports of a strained relationship with his father Jeff, leading Freddy to leave the family home and move in with his maternal grandmother, Jackiey Budden, Mirror reports. ‌ On Instagram, Freddy opened up about his decision to seek treatment, saying: "I've decided that I will be cutting down and I want to go to Rehab In Marbs as I feel if I'm in England I won't take getting clean seriously." ‌ He described smoking as a "bad coping mechanism that turned into an addiction, something I relied on and something that made me feel sane and some what OK." Yet now, Freddy is determined to turn his life around. "I've found a boxing club and a rehabilitation centre. Ive found someone I want to get to know and I'm happy. I got a good bunch of friends and I [want to] get out and enjoy myself." His goal is clear. "I want to be clean so I can live happily and have healthy relationships with people and be there for all of my family rather then feeling like I'm in the middle and have to choose a side." Freddy also reflected on his struggle to feel loved, admitting, "I haven't been able to feel loved properly as I have never loved myself and it starts now." He hopes to embrace a new chapter, sharing: "I want to play football and take up boxing I want to be happy and be in a healthy relationship and have a healthy relationship with my Nana and my father." ‌ The young man ended his heartfelt message with a plea for privacy and understanding: "Every day is a new story about me and my Nana and father. It's getting boring now. Mind your business and have a good rest of the week x." Concerns about Freddy's wellbeing have grown this week after news emerged that he had moved out of his father's home to live with Jackiey Budden. Freddy and Jeff had previously been seen sharing a close bond, notably on the BBC series Race Across the World last year. However, their relationship now appears fractured, with Freddy growing closer to his late mother Jade's mother. ‌ Reports say Jeff is devastated by the situation and is considering legal action to prevent Freddy and his grandmother from spending time together. Defying his father's wishes, Freddy has continued to share photos with his grandmother on social media. One recent post alarmed fans as he listed the things he hates about himself, including his 'relationship with weed,' 'step parents,' and his inability to love properly. He also mentioned having 'family issues.' Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Get the latest news sent straight to your messages by joining our WhatsApp community today. The late Big Brother star died aged 27 in 2009 after a battle with cervical cancer. Supporters flooded Freddy's post with messages of encouragement. One TikTok user wrote, "Ah man this is gonna be sad to watch," while another said, "Go home son, this is not what mum wanted for you sweetheart." A third added, "Sending you love Fred! Watched you in Race Across the World & you're such a decent lad with so much potential." The tension within the family extends beyond his father. Freddy was absent from his older brother Bobby's 22nd birthday party on Monday, an event reportedly marked by a "sadness" due to his absence. Bobby was said to have spent time with Jeff and his stepmother Kate instead. Freddy was just four when Jade passed away. Since then, Jeff has dedicated himself to raising Freddy and Bobby, striving to provide stability after such a traumatic loss.
