Sabah starts preparation for ASEAN Travel Exchange
KOTA KINABALU (June 3): Preparations are underway for Sabah to host the two-day ASEAN Travel Exchange (ATE) 2025 this month, says Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Seri Christina Liew.
ATE 2025 is a premier Business 2 Business (B2B) networking event in Sabah, connecting travel trade sellers and regional buyers to foster partnerships and collaborations on June 19 and 20.
The minister said the State Government through the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment (KePKAS) will host this inaugural mega tourism event at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC).
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has been invited to officiate at the opening ceremony on June 19.
Liew said KePKAS supports the proposal for four organisations to establish strategic partnership with Sabah Tourism Board (STB) in organising ATE 2025. They are the ASEAN Tourism Association (ASEANTA), Federation of ASEAN Travel Associations (FATA), Malaysian Association of Tour & Travel Agents (MATTA) and AirAsia Group.
ASEAN has 10 member countries – Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, The Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
For ATE 2025, the target audience will be made up of tour operators, travel agents, hoteliers, homestay operators, product owners and decision-makers from the industry stakeholders.
'As we gear up for the upcoming event, I have been informed by the president of FATA (Datuk Tan Kok Liang) that 354 delegates from 17 countries have already confirmed their participation. They comprise 125 sellers and 229 buyers,' said Liew after a courtesy call by a delegation from the organisers, recently.
According to Tan, seller countries include Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Brunei and Cambodia, with Malaysia leading the list with 88 sellers.
'On the buyers' side, top participating countries include the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, India and Thailand. This strong regional presence underscores growing international interest in Malaysia's tourism offerings, particularly in Sabah, which continues to gain traction as a vibrant and strategic tourism hub in the region,' he said in his briefing for the minister.
Also present were the Ministry's Permanent Secretary Datuk Josie Lai, President of MATTA Nigel Wong, Chairman of MATTA Sabah Mohd Azlan Saleh, and Immediate Past Chairman of MATTA Sabah, Lawrence Chin.

Vincent Tan buys 31.5mil Berjaya Food shares in one swoop
KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Sri Vincent Tan Chee Yioun has lifted his direct stake in Berjaya Food Bhd (BFood) above the five per cent threshold, snapping up 31.5 million shares in a single transaction on Aug 12, the group's latest Bursa Malaysia filing showed. BFood's shares ended that day at 29.5 sen, up from 28.5 sen a day earlier. Based on that range, the deal is estimated to be worth between RM8.98 million and RM9.29 million, although the filing did not disclose whether it was executed on the open market or through a private arrangement. This raised the tycoon's direct holdings to 95.63 million shares, or 5.40 per cent, from 3.62 per cent previously. His indirect stake remains unchanged at 1.13 billion shares, or 63.58 per cent, held through Berjaya Corp Bhd (BCorp) and a web of related companies. Together, Tan's direct and indirect interests now amount to 1.22 billion shares, representing about 69 per cent of BFood. The latest acquisition comes less than a month after Tan reappeared on BFood's substantial shareholder list on July 17, with 64.13 million shares held directly and the same 1.13 billion shares indirectly. In January 2023, Tan ceased to be a substantial shareholder when his combined holdings slipped below the five per cent threshold, largely due to a restructuring of shareholdings within BCorp and its subsidiaries. BFood, the food and beverage arm of BCorp, operates the Starbucks and Kenny Rogers Roasters brands in Malaysia, along with other dining concepts. The stock started the year at 34.5 sen, having touched a high of 45.5 sen and a low of 27.5 sen. Year to date, the counter has shed 5.5 sen, or 15.9 per cent. For the third quarter ended March 31, BFood's net loss widened to RM37.19 million from RM29.76 million a year earlier, as weaker Kenny Rogers Roasters performance and pre-opening costs for overseas ventures offset savings from store rationalisation. Revenue fell 18.1 per cent to RM113.58 million on fewer outlets in operation, while management pointed to dampened consumer sentiment, partly linked to the Middle East conflict, as a further drag on sales.

Negeri Sembilan revives Sungai Timun firefly sanctuary for TMNS 2026
REMBAU: The Negeri Sembilan government is reviving the Sungai Timun firefly sanctuary to enhance eco-tourism before Visit Negeri Sembilan Year 2026 (TMNS 2026). State Tourism, Arts and Culture Committee chairman Nicole Tan Lee Koon highlighted the sanctuary's potential as a key attraction. 'Malaysia has only four firefly sanctuaries, in Pahang, Sabah, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan. We must take advantage of this by redeveloping our own, which has been inactive since the COVID-19 pandemic,' she said. Tan spoke after launching the Publicity and Public Participation Programme for the Rembau Local Plan Draft 2035. She revealed discussions with Melaka to promote cross-border tourism, leveraging Melaka's River Cruise visitors. 'Melaka has the River Cruise, so their tourists could be brought to Sungai Timun for firefly-watching. We'll also engage local boat operators to assess how best to restart the activity,' she said. Additionally, the state will expand the Jejak Warisan programme with a trekking route from Kampung Miku to Seri Menanti. Trained mountain guides will lead the trail, sharing historical and cultural insights. - Bernama
