Hurricanes sophomore linebacker Adarius Hayes, who was a driver in a two-car crash in Largo on Saturday that left three people dead, has a history of traffic infractions, according to Broward, Miami-Dade and Pinellas County court records.
Hayes was hospitalized following Saturday's crash but was released from the hospital, according to a UM statement. Hayes has not been charged with a crime in Saturday's crash. There is an ongoing investigation, police said, and there were no signs of impairment from either driver.
'We are aware of a car crash that occurred on the afternoon of May 10 in Largo, Fla., involving student-athlete Adarius Hayes,' UM said in a statement. 'Adarius was hospitalized and released, and we are currently working to gather more information. We are deeply saddened to learn the crash resulted in three fatalities, as confirmed by Largo Police, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of those lost.'
Gail Price, 78, Jabari Elijah Solomon, 10, and Charlie Herbert Solomon Riveria, 4, were killed in the crash on Saturday. Price was driving the Kia Soul the children were in, and Hayes was driving a Dodge Durango.
In 2023 in his native Pinellas County, Hayes was cited once for careless driving and once for an improper lane change, when police said he nearly side-swiped a police car. He was also cited in the county for speeding in March of this year.
In the careless driving citation on Feb. 7, 2023, police said Hayes was operating his vehicle inattentively and unaware of the surroundings. It led to a crash with an estimated $600 in property damage, according to court records. His license was suspended after he failed to complete a driving course, and it was reinstated on May 12.
His other Pinellas County citation, on Nov. 20, 2023, Hayes was cited for an improper lane change. According to the police officer's notes, Hayes was driving 'at a high rate of speed' and 'cut over into middle lane when it wasn't safe to do so … almost sideswipping (sic) my right front.'
On March 1 of this year, Hayes was cited in Clearwater when he was clocked going 84 mph in a 55 mph zone, according to court records. He was ticketed for $281 and elected to complete a driving course.
Hayes, a touted football prospect, moved to Miami-Dade County to play for the Hurricanes before the 2024 season.
In Miami-Dade County, Hayes was cited for racing on the highway on Sept. 8, 2024. Hayes was ticketed for racing more than 90 mph on SW Eighth Street and SW 92nd Avenue. He was also cited for driving with an improperly displayed or obscured tag during the same stop. The cases were dismissed in February.
On Oct. 17, 2024, he was cited for driving with a suspended license unknowingly, having no proof of insurance and no valid registration in Miami-Dade. After providing proof of compliance, the cases were dismissed, according to court records.
On March 29, 28 days after being cited for speeding in Pinellas County, he was ticketed for speeding in Miami-Dade. He was clocked doing 80 mph in a 45 mph zone on US 1 and SW 171st Street, according to court records. Hayes has pled not guilty to the offense, according to court records.
In Broward County on Nov. 4, 2024, Hayes was ticketed for an improper lane change in Miramar that led to a crash and an estimated $4,000 in damage. He paid $171 for the ticket.
Hayes, a 20-year-old sophomore linebacker and native of Largo, played in 12 games as a freshman. He had four tackles and an interception. He was a four-star prospect in the 2024 recruiting class. Hayes, who played for Largo High, signed with the Hurricanes after previously being committed to Florida.
