LOS ANGELES (Kyodo) -- Japan's Urawa Reds finished their Club World Cup campaign without a win after being soundly beaten 4-0 by Mexico's Monterrey on Wednesday.
Having gone toe-to-toe with Italian powerhouse Inter Milan in a 2-1 loss Saturday, Maciej Skorza's Reds showed attacking intent early in their Group E contest against Monterrey but could not convert a handful of half-chances.
The Mexican side took control with three goals -- including two spectacular, long-range efforts -- over a nine-minute span before halftime at the Rose Bowl.
Nelson Deossa lashed a 30-meter rocket past Shusaku Nishikawa in the 30th minute and German Berterame side-footed Monterrey's second four minutes later. Jesus Corona made it 3-0 with a blast from distance that once again left the Urawa keeper helpless.
Urawa striker Thiago Santana had a late goal wiped out for offside before Berterame scored his brace in injury time.
"Today our target was to play more offensively, and I think we created our chances, but unfortunately we conceded the first goal from distance, and that was the deciding moment," Skorza said. "After that, immediately we conceded the second goal and then it was very difficult."
Monterrey advance to the round of 16 along with Inter, who topped the group after beating Argentina's River Plate on Wednesday.
