The Los Angeles Dodgers are trying to hold on to the lead in the National League West as the trade deadline approaches, and are reaching out to teams about their closers, including the Minnesota Twins, per a report from Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

Photo byThe Dodgers have endured a season-ending injury to Evan Phillips, along with injuries to Michael Kopech and Blake Treinen, who could still return this season, but to combat these issues, they have called the Twins about Jhoan Durán, per Nightengale.
Durán has saved 20-plus games in back-to-back seasons leading up to this season, and is on pace to reach that mark once again. In his 44 1/3 innings this season, Durán has struck out 50 hitters while walking 16 and has a 1.62 ERA, which is the best of his career.
Meanwhile, the Twins entered Tuesday sitting in fourth of the American League Central, but just 4 1/2 games back for the final wild card spot. While the Twins could make a run with a good week, they are likely setting up to sell off expiring contracts at the trade deadline.
While Durán is not set to be a free agent until 2028, the Twins could still move him if the price is right, and the Dodgers have the talent to meet that price to make them, at the very least, consider the offer.
While the Dodgers and Twins look to be on different paths this season, the pair could come together at the deadline and make a blockbuster move that strengthens the defending champions down the stretch.

Padres' Trade Deadline Takes Wild Turn After Red Sox's Jarren Duran Decision
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The San Diego Padres desperately need to add an outfielder to fill the massive void in left field. They've been closely linked to a trade for Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran, but no deal has come to fruition to this point. Still, it seems like the Padres have been all in to land Duran. He would come with All-Star potential and team control on his contract, two things the Padres desperately need. While the Padres have stayed closely linked to Duran, USA Today's Bob Nightengale recently suggested the Red Sox had no plans of trading the All-Star outfielder in the coming days. CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - JULY 18: Jarren Duran #16 of the Boston Red Sox bats in a game against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on July 18, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois. CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - JULY 18: Jarren Duran #16 of the Boston Red Sox bats in a game against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on July 18, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois."The Boston Red Sox have no plans to trade outfielder Jarren Duran at the deadline, rejecting the San Diego Padres' offers, and are more likely to move him this winter," Nightengale wrote. This report is a crushing blow to the Padres and their fans. Adding Duran would have been the perfect deadline addition for the Padres to make as they try to chase down the Los Angeles Dodgers in the loaded National League West. San Diego could still pursue a trade for Duran in the offseason if it wants to. But for now, the front office will need to pivot to a different option. Luis Robert Jr. and Adolis Garcia are two change-of-scenery candidates the Padres could pursue. Neither guy has been great this season, but it would be a lot more affordable to trade for one of them than Duran. Either way, a trade needs to be made in the coming days. The Padres need to find a solution for the biggest hole on their roster. More MLB: Mitch Keller Blockbuster? Blue Jays Trade Rumors Reaching New Peak

Dodgers trade idea swaps Dustin May for All-Star outfielder on struggling team
The Los Angeles Dodgers' starting rotation is getting healthy, and Dustin May could become a trade chip. The Dodgers could use him to land an outfielder. May has a 4.73 ERA this year and will be a free agent after the season. However, with Tyler Glasnow back, Blake Snell returning soon and Shohei Ohtani building up, the Dodgers may not need May any longer. However, they need an outfielder to replace Michael Conforto, and May could help them land one. The Baltimore Orioles are set up to be sellers, and FanSided's Scott Rogust suggested the Dodgers trade May to land Cedric Mullins. Mullins is also a free agent after the season and is having a down year. "The Orioles are a team that has massively underperformed this season after making it to the postseason in each of the last two years," wrote Rogust. "Considering that they are far outside of a playoff spot, it would make sense for them to sell some of their players for a return. Mullins makes sense, especially for a team in need of a hitting outfielder like the Dodgers." Mullins was an All-Star in 2021, but this year he is slashing .214/.294/.398. Even with those numbers, he would be better than Conforto in the outfield. He does have 13 home runs on the season. However, the Dodgers would have to give up more than just May. Swapping rentals would not make sense for the Orioles."For the Orioles, it would make sense for them to ask for more in return for Mullins, even though he's set to be a free agent this winter," wrote Rogust. "That's because May is also set to be a free agent after this season. So, getting some controllable assets would make sense." More MLB:
