Delhi govt cancels leaves, installs air raid sirens amid reports of drone attacks in Jammu

Indian Express08-05-2025

As drone attacks were reported in Jammu and along the International Border via Pakistani drones on Thursday, the leaves of all government officials in Delhi have been cancelled.
In an order, the Services department said, 'In view of the prevailing situation and preparedness for the emergency response system, the Competent Authority has directed that no leave shall be granted to any Officer/Official of the Government of NCT of Delhi, till further orders.'
This includes doctors and staff in Delhi government hospitals as well.
The Delhi Police headquarters also directed that no leaves will be given to its personnel till further orders.
District Magistrates (DMs) across the city, meanwhile, have been asked to ensure that air raid sirens are installed across the Capital by Friday. The Delhi Airport has an existing system in place.
Till late Thursday evening, both electrical and manual sirens were installed in Dwarka, Uttam Nagar, Najafgarh and Kapashera.
According to sources, all DMs were ordered to work through the night to ensure directions are followed and preparations for emergency response are made in all 11 districts.
Mock drills were conducted in 55 locations in Delhi on Wednesday, which included blackouts in several places.
On Thursday, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) issued an advisory for blackouts. 'It is advised that during 'Declared Power Blackout', no alternate/backup power supply should be switched on to ensure safety and security of the Capital,' it said.
Sources in the local civic body said the advisory was issued because during Wednesday's drill, several hotels, restaurants, and shops switched to power backups, defeating the purpose of a blackout.
NDMC officials also said the area's powerhouses have been connected with the Tughlakabad Air Force Station, and next time a blackout occurs, it will be coordinated through the station.
In notifications released late Thursday night, meanwhile, the Haryana government and its health and fire departments asked civil employees not to leave their headquarters or areas where they are posted.
The Directorate of Fire and Emergency Services directed that employees' leaves sanctioned be cancelled forthwith 'in light of the prevailing situation in the country and the increasing risk of fire incidents due to changing environmental and operational conditions'. The department stressed that it is 'imperative to strengthen fire safety preparedness across all districts in the state'.
Likewise, the Haryana Directorate of Health Services has stated that there will be no further leave sanctioned, and government doctors cannot leave their stations without its approval.
The State's Human Resources Department has asked government employees, including civil servants, university employees, PSU employees, etc, to strictly not leave their stations or headquarters.

Pakistans Debt Crisis Explodes: Burden Mounts To 76,007,000,000,000 PKR Exposing Islamabads Vulnerability

Pakistan Economic Crisis: Pakistan is often called the begging bowl of the world, especially among the Islamic nations. Every now and then, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is seen visiting friendly countries seeking assistance, investments and support while its Army keeps spending on building terror infrastructure. Now, a fresh report has revealed a staggering surge in Pakistan's debt. While Pakistan has been facing burgeoning inflation, the country's national debt is soaring to a record high. A new Economic Survey, released this Monday, reveals that Pakistan's debt has soared to an unprecedented high, painting a deeply concerning picture for its economic future. According to the CNN-NEWS18 report, Pakistan's total public debt hit a staggering 76,007 billion Pakistani Rupees (PKR)—that's 76 trillion —by the end of March 2025. This marks the highest debt level in the country's history. To put that into perspective, it translates to approximately INR 23.1 trillion or US $269.344 billion. The rapid escalation of this debt is particularly alarming. Just four years ago, in 2020-21, Pakistan's public debt stood at 39,860 billion PKR, meaning it has nearly doubled in that short span. Looking back a decade, the figure was just 17,380 billion PKR, indicating that the nation's public debt has ballooned by almost five times over the past ten years. This colossal sum of 76,007 billion PKR is made up of 51,518 billion PKR in domestic debt and 24,489 billion PKR in external debt. The Economic Survey itself warns of the dangers, stating that "excessive or poorly managed debt can pose serious vulnerabilities, such as rising interest burdens and can undermine long-term fiscal sustainability and economic security if left unaddressed." Amidst this backdrop, Pakistan recently received a US $1.03 billion aid package from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) under its Extended Fund Facility, an attempt to provide some relief to its strained economy. Notably, Pakistan is planning to increase its defence spending in wake of the Operation Sindoor where it faced a humiliating defeat against India. Pakistan has repeatedly been accused of diverting development funds towards terror and military infrastructure.

Pahalgam attack remarks: Allahabad HC grants anticipatory bail to LU asst prof

The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court on Monday granted an interim anticipatory bail to Lucknow University's assistant professor Madri Kakoti who was booked on April 28 this year on charges of sedition and causing disharmony through her controversial social media post related to the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack. Justice Rajeev Singh passed the order. An FIR was lodged against Kakoti on the application of Jatin Shukla, a student and member of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). In the FIR, she was accused of targeting the integrity and sovereignty of India through her posts on X. She was booked for multiple offences under relevant Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections, including charges related to endangering India's sovereignty, unity and integrity. Advocate Syed Mohammad Haider Rizvi represented Kakoti in the court. It was contended in the FIR that Kakoti's posts contained objectionable and provocative terms such as saffron-terrorist and were circulated by Pakistani media houses.

'Creation Of Bangladesh Justified?: Himanta Hits Out At Indira Gandhi Govt Over Illegal Immigrants

Last Updated: While Himanta Biswa Sarma said Indira Gandhi deserves credit for India's 1971 victory over Pakistan, he raised doubts on whether the creation of Bangladesh was justified. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday criticised former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's government in 1971 for 'squandering the opportunity" to reclaim occupied Indian territories, after the Indian Armed Forces 'crushed" the Pakistan Army during the Bangladesh Liberation War, and not dealing with illegal immigration. Speaking in the Assam Assembly, Sarma said, 'In 1971, under the leadership of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, India won the war. The Indian Army achieved victory, and Indira Gandhi was the Prime Minister, she rightly deserves credit." 'However, after the victory, 93,000 Pakistani prisoners of war (POWs) captured by India were returned to Pakistan, but we could not secure even nine POWs from Pakistan." Though Indian Forces crushed the Pakistani Army in 1971, the Govt of the day could not secure Indian interests and squandered the opportunity to reclaim back occupied Indian territories. #AssamAssembly — Himanta Biswa Sarma (@himantabiswa) June 9, 2025 He further said, 'Yes, we won the war but what exactly did we achieve. We created Bangladesh. But are we satisfied with that decision today? It's worth asking in 2025: Was the creation of Bangladesh the right move?" He said Indira Gandhi could have at least demanded the return of all illegal migrants in exchange for supporting the creation of Bangladesh. 'Though Indian Forces crushed the Pakistani Army in 1971, the Govt of the day could not secure Indian interests and squandered the opportunity to reclaim back occupied Indian territories," he said. India initially provided humanitarian aid and extended support to the Bengali resistance force, the Mukti Bahini. After Pakistan launched pre-emptive strikes on Indian airbases, India declared a full-scale war and engaged Pakistani forces across land, air and sea. In collaboration with the Mukti Bahini, India defeated Pakistani forces in just 13 days, capturing 93,000 Pakistani soldiers and leading to the creation of Bangladesh. India and Pakistan signed the Simla Agreement in 1972, with both sides agreeing to resolve issues peacefully. India agreed to repatriate Pakistani soldiers in exchange for Pakistan's formal recognition of Bangladesh. However, this move has been criticised by several political leaders, who said India missed an opportunity to reclaim Pakistan-occupied Kashmir without getting adequate concessions.
