Joel Klatt on Oklahoma Sooners' 2025 College Football Playoff hopes: 'I can't, in good conscience, pick them'

Brent Venables returns to calling defensive plays for the Oklahoma Sooners in the 2025 season.
FOX Sports analyst and former quarterback of the Colorado Buffaloes, Joel Klatt, sees Oklahoma Sooners as one of college football's biggest wild cards in 2025. With a revamped offense and a proven defensive mind taking over again, the Sooners look stronger on paper.
But as much as Klatt likes the pieces in Norman, he's not convinced they're set for a College Football Playoff run – and the schedule is his main concern. Klatt ranked Oklahoma No. 24 in his preseason Top 25 and recently broke down his reasoning on The Joel Klatt Show, where he called OU a potential playoff sleeper – with a major 'but.'
Offensive changes give Oklahoma Sooners a real upside this fall
Joel Klatt's optimism starts with the offensive overhaul. After one of the worst scoring outputs in the SEC last year, the Sooners are turning to former Washington State QB John Mateer and his OC Ben Arbuckle to fix it.
"I love the additions on offense. John Mateer is a guy I'm very impressed with. I've talked about him at length this offseason. (Ben) Arbuckle, his offensive coordinator at Washington State, also joins him in Norman there.
Their offense should be better. It was bad last year. The film was some of the worst that I've ever seen, to be honest with you," Klatt said.
Oklahoma's offense struggled badly last season, averaging just 13 points per SEC game without help from the defense and ranking 97th nationally.

New quarterback John Mateer doesn't need to match the 4,000 yards and 44 touchdowns he had at Washington State, but even coming close would be a big upgrade. The Sooners also brought in star running back Jaydn Ott, new playmakers at receiver and tight end and experienced linemen to help fix a weak offensive line.
Brent Venables
is back in charge of the defense and Klatt thinks that's a good thing
On defense, Brent Venables is calling the shots again. "Defense improved. The defense has steadily improved.
Venables will be the play-caller on the defensive side for OU this year. I like that. I really like that. He's entering his fourth season. We've seen them have a double-digit win season under Venables. So, can it happen? Absolutely," Klatt said. After a year with Zac Alley as defensive coordinator, Venables is taking over play-calling again following Alley's departure.
The brutal
SEC schedule
is the big concern
Even with improvement on both sides, Klatt isn't predicting a playoff run – and he is clear why.
"Here's the problem. If they had a more favorable schedule, like Auburn's? I think I would probably pick them (as a CFP sleeper) right here," Klatt said. "But I can't, in good conscience, pick them with what their schedule is... They're not making this jump... I don't like it... While I think they can improve, I don't think they'll make enough of an improvement, as it relates to their schedule, which we don't talk about enough, to go to the playoff.
"
OU faces Michigan early, then battles through Texas, Alabama, LSU, Tennessee, Auburn, Ole Miss, Missouri, and South Carolina. Even a much-improved roster will struggle to navigate that slate.

Julian Sayin named Ohio State's starting quarterback for season opener against Texas

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Julian Sayin will be Ohio State's starting quarterback when the No. 3 Buckeyes open the season against top-ranked Texas on Aug. 30, coach Ryan Day announced Monday. HT Image Day, who is in his seventh year leading the Buckeyes, said Sayin was more consistent in the competition with Lincoln Kienholz but there was some separation over the past week. "It was a close competition. I think both guys we all feel confident can win a game for us. I feel like our guys are confident with both quarterbacks, I feel like we are going to need both quarterbacks,' Day said. 'Lincoln did a lot of great things, but we're going to name Julian the starter, give him the majority of the reps with the ones and go prepare to beat Texas.' Sayin is listed as a sophomore but has four years of eligibility remaining. He originally committed to Alabama as the top-rated quarterback in the Class of 2024 and was taking classes when Nick Saban retired. Sayin then entered the transfer portal last spring and came to Ohio State. He played in four games last season, including the College Football Playoff first-round game against Tennessee, and he was 5 for 12 for 84 yards and one touchdown while taking 27 snaps. 'I think earning trust is just all about consistency, who are you day in and day out, and are you making the routine plays routinely. Are you someone who the offense can count on and who your teammates can count on consistently?' Sayin said on Aug. 5 about his approach. Offensive coordinator Brian Hartline also pointed out Sayin's consistency, along with limited turnovers and emergence as a leader, in his body of work. 'The command and earning the respect of your peers. Ultimately, the locker room always knows,' Hartline said. Texas coach Steve Sarkisian tried to recruit Sayin and said after Monday's announcement that he had a ton of respect for him. 'We recruited him hard here. He was a very gifted passer, really good player. Came to camp with us, I think, two years in a row. So we got a lot of familiarity with him," Sarkisian said. "Very good player, elite passer, very good arm talent, very quick release, really accurate guy. Obviously, he's got great weapons around him, so he's the type of guy that can utilize those weapons in a good system. So, it poses a heck of a challenge.' Sayin won't be the most-hyped quarterback in the opener. That goes to Texas' Arch Manning, who is considered an early Heisman Trophy contender. ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here. AP college football: and

Expectations return at Utah following disappointing 2024 season

Kyle Whittingham considered making his 21st season at Utah his last. Win a championship, walk away would have been a perfect ending. HT Image A disappointing season changed Whittingham's mind. A sour note was not the way he was going to end a run that included consecutive Pac-12 championships and seven 10-win seasons. 'I couldn't stomach going out on that, with that season, as frustrating as it was and as discouraging as it was,' Whittingham said. 'It just didn't sit well with anybody, but most of all me and so I thought, 'Hey, that's not going to be the final act of my deal. I got to come back and try to get the ship right and get back on track.'' Whittingham hoped to go out on top after 20 seasons. The Utes were loaded, picked to finish first in their first Big 12 season and a potential College Football Playoff team. Utah instead floundered, losing seven straight games at one point to finish 5-7. Whittingham opted to return to Salt Lake City and has the type of team that could produce a quick bounce back. Utah's defense has been one of the nation's best under Whittingham and will likely be stout again with several key players back. The offense will have a new look with two additions from New Mexico: offensive coordinator Jason Beck and dual-threat quarterback Devon Dampier. The Lobos were fourth nationally in total offense a year ago with Beck calling the shots and Dampier running the plays, so the Utes should be explosive in their new-look offense. 'We really just want to put the right guys in the right places to make plays," Beck said. 'We want to adapt to what our strengths are and play to those strengths. We're going to go, not at a fast tempo, but we're going no huddle.' Utah's quarterback situation the past few years revolved around Cameron Rising. He was superb in 2021 and 2022 but struggled with injuries his final two years. Dampier gives the Utes a dimension they haven't had. The 5-foot-11 junior was one of the nation's best quarterbacks last season, beating teams with his arm and legs. Dampier threw for 2,768 yards and 12 touchdowns — with 12 interceptions — while adding 1,166 yards and 19 TDs rushing. 'He's got that 'it' factor that you look for in quarterbacks. He's got the field general mentality that you look for,' Whittingham said. "He's a guy that everybody gravitates towards. There's no doubt who's in charge on offense.' Utah annually has one of the best, most physical defenses in the country. This season should be no different, even after losing numerous players to graduation. The Utes' front line should again be stout and the linebacking corps is solid, anchored by Lander Brown. Smith Snowden and Tao Johnson also are back in a secondary that could be among the best in the Big 12. 'The defense has been very consistent, something that you can count on from year to year,' Whittingham said. 'Can't remember the last time we've had a real down year defensively and so the defense just needs to do what they've been doing for a lot of years.' Utah has a tough season opener on the road, playing at UCLA on Aug. 30 before hosting Cal Poly and Wyoming. The Utes open Big 12 play at home against No. 23 Texas Tech and face No. 11 Arizona State two weeks later. Utah also hosts No. 17 Kansas State late in the season, with road games against West Virginia, BYU, Baylor and Kansas. ___ AP college football: and
