Sioux Falls school board approves $356M budget for fiscal year 2026
The full tax-supported fund budget includes more than $356 million in revenues and expenditures, with a majority from the general fund, including $232 million in general fund revenue and $235 million in general fund expenses.
District business manager Todd Vik noted this budget includes $3.1 million in budget cuts as federal pandemic relief funds expire. These cuts were previously discussed in work sessions on March 26 and April 2.
Board members voted to halve a $106,000 cut to the School Bus Inc. budget that was initially proposed in prior work sessions on the budget. That funding amount was originally given to SBI for pandemic-related costs from the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) fund.
The remaining half of the SBI cut will likely be seen in the fiscal year 2027 budget. School board president Carly Reiter said she felt strongly that SBI was a good partner to the district and wanted to spread the cuts out over two years to allow them to adjust their hiring and attrition.
No public comments were heard on the budget during its hearing. Superintendent Jane Stavem noted the board will make a final vote approving the budget in July or August. Reiter noted committees for the fiscal year 2027 budget will start to meet in November.
Vik said future projected efficiencies – or future rates the district may have to cut by – include 1.5% in fiscal year 2027, 1% in fiscal year 2028 and half a percent thereafter.

Homeowners will see their school levy decrease by 17 cents in 2026, Vik projected, adding that the average school property tax bill for homes in the district is expected to drop 3.3% next year.
A 'budget message' attached to the budget notes that former Gov. Kristi Noem proposed a 1.25% increase in state aid to education that was adopted by the South Dakota Legislature.
'While this funding reality makes it difficult to raise teacher pay and support the growing needs of students, the Sioux Falls School District worked to build another fiscally responsible budget,' the message states. 'Public education is the backbone of strong communities, and, despite funding woes, the district is committed to providing the highest-quality education to all students.'

Watch live: Philadelphia teachers' union giving updates on labor talks as contract nears expiration
The Philadelphia Federation of Teachers has already authorized a strike if it cannot reach a new contract with the School District of Philadelphia by Aug. 31 — the date the current contract expires, just a few days into the 2025-26 school year. On Wednesday, union leaders are giving an update on where labor talks with the district stand, with the first day of school — Aug. 25 — less than two weeks out. Leaders of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers are speaking at 10:30 a.m. You can watch the update live in the player above or wherever CBS News Philadelphia is streaming. PFT has called for the district to end its sick leave policy that requires educators to meet with their principal after using three days. The union is also calling for paid parental leave, penalty pay for teachers with oversized classes and restoration of school libraries. Last week, PFT President Arthur Steinberg said the union does not want to strike, but the 14,000-member group was "not even close" to reaching a deal with the school district. Members have already gathered to make picket signs, and further strike preparation events are planned for each day this week. This is a developing story and will be updated.

SBI Share Price Today: Should you Buy, Sell or Hold after Q1 results?
By Markets Desk Published on August 11, 2025, 08:13 IST Shares of State Bank of India (SBI) are in focus after the lender posted an in-line operating performance for Q1FY26, aided by robust treasury gains and contained asset quality trends. Multiple brokerages have retained their positive outlook on the stock, citing steady loan growth, resilient margins and healthy asset quality. HSBC has maintained its Buy call with a target price of ₹960, noting that strong treasury income drove a profit beat while asset quality trends remained contained. The brokerage believes SBI is well-positioned to deliver healthy loan growth, protect NIM aided by a capital raise, higher loan-to-deposit ratio (LDR) and lower liquidity. Bernstein has retained its Market Perform rating with a target of ₹800, highlighting 1Q loan and deposit growth of 12%, marginally higher than ICICI Bank's YoY loan growth, albeit at the expense of a sharper margin drop. While core profitability remains weak, healthy non-interest income (NOI) gains and continued recoveries supported return on assets (RoA) above 1%. UBS has kept a Neutral rating with a target of ₹880, noting that margins were in line while higher other income and controlled opex boosted earnings. The brokerage flagged that business growth was modest and the LDR moderated by 70 bps QoQ, though management remains confident of meeting loan growth and NIM guidance. CLSA has reiterated its Outperform call with a target price of ₹1,050 after a core PBT beat of 32% versus estimates, driven by stronger core pre-provision operating profit (PPOP) and benign credit costs. SBI continues to outpace the sector on loan growth, aided by superior retail loan growth, while asset quality remains healthy with the gross slippage ratio coming in 10 bps below estimates. Jefferies has maintained its Buy rating with a ₹970 target price, highlighting that Q1 profit of ₹192 billion, up 12% YoY, was above expectations thanks to higher treasury gains and lower opex. Loan growth stood at 12% with NIM decline contained at 10 bps QoQ. Management retained its return on assets guidance of 1% and domestic NIM of 3%, with CET-1 CAR at 11% post the recent capital raise.
