Apple shares rise after strong quarterly results amid tariff woes, competition
Driven by a sharp rebound in its flagship phone sales, Apple posted its fastest revenue growth since 2021 and forecast "mid to high single digit" growth for the current quarter, well above analysts' 3.27% estimate.
"Although there are specific drivers like China subsidies that can be attributed for some of the exceptional strength, the acceleration in revenue growth ... is equally surprising, especially in a quarter when consumers typically hold off purchases ahead of the next iPhone launch in September," J.P.Morgan analysts said.
Apple has been rebalancing its manufacturing footprint, sourcing iPhones from India and other products such as Macs and Apple Watches from Vietnam, while much of its product line still benefits from tariff exemptions.
CEO Tim Cook warned that tariffs would raise costs by $1.1 billion in the current quarter after the company said it took an $800 million hit from tariffs in the third quarter.
The company also faces stiff competition from hardware rivals such as Samsung Electronics (005930.KS), opens new tab in the premium smartphone space and software giant Alphabet (GOOGL.O), opens new tab, which is rapidly embedding AI into Android and ramping up AI spending with growing returns.
Among the 'Magnificent Seven' stocks, Apple has lagged behind this year, with its stock down 17%, as it grapples with staying competitive in the fast-evolving AI space.
Apple has delayed the release of its AI-enhanced virtual assistant - Siri, and was slow to launch Apple Intelligence, but Cook said the company is making headway and scaling up its AI spending to catch up with Big Tech rivals.
"Brand loyalty gives Apple time to get the AI transition right, but it needs to start delivering", said Matt Britzman, senior equity analyst, Hargreaves Lansdown.

India services growth hits 11-month high in July on stronger exports, PMI shows
BENGALURU, Aug 5 (Reuters) - Growth in India's services sector accelerated to an 11-month high in July, driven by strong international demand and sustained domestic sales, a survey showed on Tuesday. The HSBC India Services Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) (INPMIS=ECI), opens new tab, compiled by S&P Global, inched up to 60.5 in July from 60.4 in June, confounding a preliminary estimate that showed a drop to 59.8. PMI readings above 50.0 indicate growth in activity on a monthly basis while those below point to a contraction. The latest reading showed the dominant services sector has been expanding for four years. The new export business sub-index - a key gauge of international demand - showed a marked acceleration in July, registering the second-strongest expansion in a year. Total new business remained robust despite easing slightly from June's pace, supported by advertising efforts and new client acquisitions. Among service categories, finance and insurance emerged as the top performer for both new orders and business activity, while real estate and business services recorded the slowest growth. Despite robust demand firms significantly slowed the pace of hiring to a 15-month low. Price pressures intensified in July as firms faced higher costs for food items, freight and labour. Service providers passed these increases on to customers, with the rate of charge inflation slightly exceeding input cost inflation. Any acceleration in inflation could affect the Reserve Bank of India's monetary policy decision-making. The central bank is expected to hold its repo rate steady at 5.50% at its August 4-6 meeting but cut its key policy rate once next quarter, according to a Reuters poll. Business confidence improved as firms anticipated benefits from marketing initiatives, technological innovation and growing online presence. The HSBC India Composite PMI Output Index, which includes manufacturing, edged up to 61.1 in July from 61.0 in June, indicating the strongest expansion since April 2024.

Oil drifts lower on rising supply, concerns about demand
Aug 5 (Reuters) - Oil prices drifted lower on Tuesday on oversupply concerns as OPEC+ moved ahead with another large output hike despite a weak demand outlook, more than offsetting the potential for tighter Russian oil trade due to U.S. policies. Brent crude futures dipped 11 cents, or 0.16%, to $68.65 a barrel by 0424 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was down 12 cents, or 0.18%, to $66.17 a barrel. It was the fourth consecutive decline for both contracts, which fell by more than 1% in the previous session to settle at their lowest in a week. Both benchmarks have receded because extra capacity from OPEC+ is acting as a buffer for any shortcomings in Russian barrels, said Priyanka Sachdeva, a senior market analyst at Phillip Nova. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies, together known as OPEC+, agreed on Sunday to raise oil production by 547,000 barrels per day for September. It marks a full and early reversal of the group's largest tranche of output cuts, amounting to about 2.5 million bpd, or around 2.4% of global demand, though analysts caution the actual amount returning to the market will be less. The rising supplies are coupled with concerns about demand, with some analysts expecting faltering economic growth in the second half of the year. JPMorgan analysts said on Tuesday the risk of a U.S. recession was high as labour demand has stalled. In addition, China's July Politburo meeting signalled no additional policy easing with the focus shifting to structural rebalancing of the world's second-largest economy, the analysts wrote in a note. The prospect of weak economic fundamentals is overshadowing concerns over possible supply disruptions that previously supported oil prices. U.S. President Donald Trump has said he could impose 100% secondary tariffs on Russian crude buyers such as India after announcing a 25% tariff on Indian imports in July. On Monday, Trump again threatened higher tariffs on Indian goods over the Russian oil purchases. New Delhi called his attack "unjustified" and vowed to protect its economic interests, deepening the trade rift between the two countries. India is the biggest buyer of seaborne crude from Russia, importing about 1.75 million bpd from January to June this year, up 1% from a year ago, according to data provided to Reuters by trade sources. Traders are also awaiting any developments on the latest U.S. tariffs on its trading partners, which analysts fear could slow economic growth and dampen fuel demand.
