Toronto FC beaten 3-1 by New York City FC in first game since buying out Italian DPs
Hannes Wolf, Mitja Ilenic and Kevin O'Toole scored for New York (9-7-4). Eight of NYCFC's wins have come at home (8-3-0).
The win moved NYCFC up three places to sixth spot in the Eastern Conference, seven places and 14 points above Toronto.
While Toronto (4-11-5) was competitive at Yankee Stadium, its offence was stagnant in the first half. There wasn't much offence until Ola Brynhildsen and Theo Corbeanu both tested New York 'keeper Tomas Romero around the hour mark.
At the other end it too often allowed NYCFC attackers too clear a path to TFC's goal.
Toronto started brightly but found itself trailing 1-0 in the 20th minute when, after a NYCFC free kick, a cross found Wolf and the Austrian midfielder's stylish left-footed volley went in after beating Sean Johnson and hitting both goalposts.
It was the ninth goal of the season for Wolf and his sixth in his last six games.
Ilenic doubled the lead in the 49th minute, sticking out a leg to deflect in Agustín Ojeda's cross after the Argentine winger had been allowed to race towards the Toronto goal without challenge. Ilenic, a 20-year-old Slovenian international fullback, marked his second goal of the season with Cristiano Ronaldo's trademark celebration.
Toronto cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 70th minute via an own goal. Corbeanu beat a defender down the right flank, reached the byline and sent in a cross that deflected off defender Justin Haak and then Romero into the goal.
O'Toole restored New York's two-goal lead in the 74th minute. Kosi Thompson was dispossessed and Maxi Moralez passed the ball to Wolf, who found O'Toole unchecked in the Toronto penalty box. The substitute dribbled towards goal and beat Johnson with a low shot.
Toronto coach Robin Fraser went with the same lineup that beat visiting Portland 3-0 Saturday in what was TFC's best performance of the season.
Toronto moved the ball around but showed little in front of goal in a first half that saw both teams attempt four shots with NYCFC holding a 2-0 edge in shots on target.
TFC defender Kevin Long was shown a yellow card in the second minute with midfielder Matty Longstaff following him into referee Fotis Bazakos' book in the 20th minute.
Defender Richie Laryea, back from Gold Cup duty with Canada, came on in the 57th minute. Maxime Dominguez became the third TFC player to be cautioned after a tussle with Ilenic in the 67th minute.
Thompson made his 100th appearance for TFC in all competitions.
New York forward Alonso Martínez returned from international duty with Costa Rica but goalkeeper Matt Freese, the hero of the American penalty shootout quarterfinal win over Honduras, remains at the Gold Cup.
Romero, an El Salvador international and former Toronto player, started in goal for NYCFC. Canadian Greg Ranjitsingh, his backup, also had a stint with TFC.
Toronto defenders Nicksoen Gomis, Zane Monlouis and Henry Wingo remain long-term casualties. Captain Jonathan Osorio was also out, recovering from a lower-body injury suffered with Canada, while midfielder Deybi Flores played in Honduras's 2-1 loss to Mexico in the Gold Cup semifinal Wednesday in California.
Toronto signed TFC 2 defender Reid Fisher and midfielder Malik Henry to MLS short-term agreements for the game. Originally drafted by CF Montreal in the second round (39 overall) in the 2024 MLS SuperDraft, Henry's promotion cost Toronto a third-round draft pick in 2026 with US$75,000 in conditional general allocation money, given Montreal had retained his MLS priority rights.
Henry came on in the 70th minute, picking up a yellow soon after.

Toronto has had little success at NYCFC with a 1-6-5 regular-season record there. The lone win was a 1-0 decision on Sept. 23, 2020, thanks to a 90th-minute Alejandro Pozuelo penalty in a game played at Red Bull Arena.
TFC has won two playoff games at NYCFC.

Austin Wells doubled and Volpe scored from third on a wild pitch. Clayton Beeter (0-1) took over in fourth for Schmidt, who allowed three runs, four hits and two walks with one strikeout and was removed with right forearm tightness. Beeter walked Will Wagner, who took second on Davis Schneider's single. After Leo Jimenez's sacrifice, Lukes finished a 14-pitch at-bat with a two-run double past third base to give the Blue Jays a 5-3 lead. Barger led off the home fifth with a homer to right center on a hanging slider. Braydon Fisher replaced Bassitt in the sixth after a two-out walk to Grisham. Bassitt allowed three runs, eight hits and three walks with nine strikeouts. Jays put new first-place status on line against Angels

The Blue Jays' next task will be to stay there, starting Friday night with the opener of a three-game series against the visiting Los Angeles Angels. Toronto took a one-game lead over the Yankees and the idle Tampa Bay Rays with an 8-5 win over New York on Thursday. It is the first time the Blue Jays have led the division this late in the season since 2016, when they finished in a wild-card spot. They last captured the East title in 2015. The Blue Jays have won 49 of their first 87 games for the first time since 1993, the last time they won the World Series. They hope George Springer remains hot after he went 8-for-14 (.571) with four home runs, 11 RBIs, four walks and seven runs against the Yankees. He is batting .513 (20-for-39) with four homers and 19 RBIs in his past 11 games. 'He can put you on his back and carry you,' Toronto manager John Schneider said. Galaxy desperate for points entering visit from Whitecaps

The defending MLS champion Galaxy have won just 5 percent of their matches this season entering Friday's clash against the Vancouver Whitecaps in Carson, Calif. MLS-worst Los Angeles (1-13-6, 9 points) has earned points in three of its last four matches (1-1-2) -- the Galaxy tied the San Jose Earthquakes 1-1 at Stanford Stadium last Saturday -- but the hole is particularly deep. 'I think we have to look at every game as of the utmost importance,' Galaxy coach Greg Vanney told reporters. 'I look at the last eight games, since the New York game (a 7-0 loss on May 10), five of those were on the road. I feel like we squandered nine points in those games. 'I think we should have taken 15 because we were either in leading positions in the last minutes of the game or in the event of the other night,' he continued, 'we had eight big chances that we don't take and I feel like we've got to figure out as a group and understand, as a group, to take the points that we deserve on the night.' Los Angeles fell behind early against San Jose before Marco Reus scored the equalizer in the 70th minute. Reus has four goals and is tied for the team lead with Christian Ramirez. The Galaxy look to avenge a 2-1 loss at Vancouver on March 2. Whitecaps star Brian White scored the winner in the 87th minute of that match. White has a team-high 10 goals. Vancouver (11-3-5, 38 points) resides in second place in the West after losing consecutive games to the Columbus Crew and San Diego FC last month. Vancouver continues to play without star Ryan Gauld due to a knee injury. Gauld scored 30 goals over the past three MLS seasons. He had one in three matches this season but last played on March 8. Progress has been extremely slow but Whitecaps coach Jesper Sorensen maintains hope the midfielder will return later this season. 'I will not expect him to be out for the season,' Sorensen told reporters. 'We hope that he'll be back sooner than later, but we've said that many times. I can't say anything really decisive about it.' This is the Whitecaps' second game in Los Angeles in six days. Vancouver beat LAFC 1-0 last Sunday. Emmanuel Sabbi scored the goal in the 20th minute.
