Bakers on Texas-Mexican Border Are Found Guilty of Harboring Illegal Workers

New York Times2 days ago
A federal jury on Wednesday found a Texas couple who owns a bakery on the Texas-Mexico border guilty of harboring undocumented workers, months after their beloved shop became snared in President Trump's aggressive immigration crackdown.
Federal authorities had accused the couple, Leonardo Baez, a father of seven, and his wife, Nora Alicia Avila, both immigrants from Mexico and green card holders, of knowingly employing and giving shelter to undocumented workers. The case was one of the first brought against business owners as Immigration and Customs Enforcement was ramping up arrests. of undocumented workers.
On Wednesday, a jury in the border city of Brownsville, Texas, sided with the federal government after a three-day trial that pitted two pillars of the community in Los Fresno, a small border town, against the Trump administration and its immigration policies. In addition to the harboring charge, the couple was found guilty of conspiring to transport undocumented immigrants.
Sentencing was set for November. The two face up to 10 years in prison and the loss of their legal status.
Their 'actions not only violate federal immigration laws but also exploit vulnerable individuals for profit,' said Craig Larrabee, the special agent in charge with Homeland Security Investigations in San Antonio, in a statement. 'This conviction sends a clear message: those who engage in human smuggling and harboring for financial benefit will be investigated, prosecuted and held accountable.'
Sylvia Gonzalez-Gorman, a political scientist and immigration expert at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, worried about the precedent for what she called a selective prosecution.

Tow Trucks Reportedly Stalking ICE Convoys And Taking Their SUVs

Isn't it great to see people fighting back, often in ways that you could never have imagined when Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) overreach raids started a couple of months ago? A story trending on social media tells of a growing group of tow truck drivers in Los Angeles who are reportedly 'stalking,' or should we say following ICE convoys around the city so they can tow away unmarked ICE vans and SUVs when they park illegally—as they invariably do—and start to conduct their 'abductions' of people off the street. Tow truck drivers to the rescue! Imagine that. It sounded great but unfortunately the story is exaggerated This sounds like a strong background story for a movie, maybe starring Gerard Butler or Liam Neeson and directed by Paul Greengrass from the Jason Bourne films. If ICE agents are 'disappearing' citizens, then tow trucks drivers can repay in kind and 'disappear' their ICE SUVs. According to Newsweek though, 'The claims, however, appear to be exaggerated.' The publication goes on to say, 'The towing company in the popular viral clip is Oxnard towing service Airport Towing. When contacted by Newsweek by phone, the company confirmed the white SUV was an ICE vehicle that had been parked illegally on Thursday, July 10. However, viral reports that the tow truck driver was 'following' ICE are inaccurate.' According to Airport Towing, the vehicle had been parked illegally on private property for more than an hour when the company arrived to tow it. Check out the video below. Seeing a tow truck driver removing an ICE SUV could not be more satisfying, even if it was just a routine removal and the story of a bunch of ICE vans being stalked by tow trucks was exaggerated. Many readers, I'm sure, were hoping this story to be be true, until fact-checking site Snopes traced the social media report back to a satirical site, saying that it had taken one incident and blown it out of proportion. But we can imagine where the story came from, as citizens are being 'disappeared' by the regime, and a vigilante tow truck resistance would seem like a godsend. Jon Favreau of Pod Save America, and former speechwriter for President Barack Obama, summed up what Americans are battling against and what tow truck drivers could react to, if so inclined. 'You have plain clothes agents, with masks, with guns, sometimes in unmarked vehicles. What are people supposed to do when someone grabs you off the street or grabs someone you're with? You're not supposed to demand to see a warrant? You not supposed to try to stop it? What if it's some bad guy, some criminal who says that they're from ICE [but they're not!]Even if the original story was exaggerated, the underlying premise of tow truck drivers resisting ICE raids is cause for hope, hope that citizens can use whatever limited powers they have to help save innocent fellow residents.

Trump says he's targeting ‘worst of the worst,' but who's getting pardoned? A letter.

Here is this week's letter to the editor of the Sheboygan Press. See our letters policy below for details about how to share your views. Trump says he's targeting 'worst of the worst' Donald Trump and his head of the Justice Department, Pam Bondi, say they are targeting only the 'worst of the worst' when it comes to criminals in the United States. They have taken thousands of immigrants off our streets without warning or a trial. The White House and Justice Department then send those very same people to prisons in El Salvador. Their only crime was crossing the border without permission. These are not the 'worst of the worst,' yet these immigrants are treated worse than murderers and child molesters. Trump has pardoned all these types of criminals. Right now, after talking to a Trump lawyer, super sex predator Ghislaine Maxwell is serving out her time in a luxury prison in Texas. And all she had to do, presumably, was give Trump some names on a silver platter, which she likely gladly did in exchange for a few favors. I'll bet that in a month or two her pardon will be forthcoming — in exchange for her testimony against some of those names. Yes, our president and his Justice Department are really going after the 'worst of the worst.' Watch out all you jaywalkers out there. If you're brown, Trump will hunt you down. You are a hardened criminal, after all. Ask Kristi Noem, the head of Homeland Security. Robert R. Texas released two years of A-F ratings for schools and districts. See how yours did.

Texas released two years of grades for school districts on Friday, closing a lengthy legal battle over the A-F rating system that helps parents determine the best schooling options for their children. The Texas Education Agency scores districts and campuses with letter grades to give Texas families an idea of how well they are teaching students. Of the about 1,200 districts scored in the 2024-25 school year, 14% got an A, 71% got a B or a C, and 15% got a D or an F. [Texas school ratings improve, but more campuses inch closer to state sanctions] The release of the latest ratings comes after some districts sued the TEA over changes to rating standards. The 15th Court of Appeals last month overturned a lower court ruling that had blocked the TEA from making the school performance scores for the 2023-24 school year public. The ratings for the 2023-24 and 2024-25 school years were made available Friday at the same time. School performance ratings can help parents decide which schools to enroll their kids in and help businesses decide which communities to invest in. Critics say they often harm districts in low-income communities, which tend to have fewer resources. Texas grades districts and each of their campuses on an A-F scale based on three categories: Student achievement: How well their students perform on state standardized tests and whether they are ready for life after high school. School progress: How much students are improving on state tests. Closing the gaps: How much progress schools are making in boosting scores for specific groups of children, like students with special needs and English language learners.
