Cauvery aarati will reflect traditions of all riparian States: Shivakumar
The Karnataka government is preparing to do the Cauvery aarti programme along with the Dasara this time, which will include programmes to represent cultures of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala, announced Deputy Chief Minister and Major and Medium Irrigation Minister D.K. Shivakumar.
Speaking in Bengaluru on Saturday, he said the modalities were being worked out. 'We have formed a committee under the leadership of BWSSB chief Ram Prasath Manohar. The Deputy Commissioner of Mandya will also be part of this committee. Various departments such as Muzrai, Kannada and Culture, Irrigation, and Tourism will be involved in various aspects of Cauvery aarti,' he said.
Asked about the Finance Department's recommendation that it would be difficult to finance Cauvery aarti, he said, 'The final decision lies with the government, no matter what the recommendations are. The government is committed to starting the Cauvery aarti.'
Responding to a query on whether Cauvery aarti venue would be close to the Krishnaraja Sagar, he said, 'This event will be held a little further away from the dam keeping in mind security considerations. The committee will take a final call on the location.'
On whether the team which manages Ganga aarti in Varanasi would handle Cauvery aarti, he said, 'It would be handled by a team from the State itself.'

At least 11 people have died while 24 people, including a six-year-old girl, are believed to be injured as thousands of fans gathered outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru to celebrate the victory of Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL 2025 championship, on Wednesday. The death toll is expected to go up. Sources told The Hindu that the injured persons were taken to Bowring hospital in Shivajinagar. It is learnt that some fans were injured as people gathered at the gates of the stadium where the cricket team was expected to turn up to celebrate the much-awaited victory. Before the team arrived at the stadium, they were felicitated by Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar at the Vidhan Soudha. Census to be held from March 1, 2027; caste to be counted The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced on Wednesday that population census along with the enumeration of castes will be conducted in two phases and the reference date of the people's headcount will be 12 a.m. on March 1, 2027. India will be counting its people after a gap of 17 years and this will be the first digital Census. The last Census was held in 2011 and the subsequent exercise in 2021 was delayed indefinitely, initially due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The notification for the intent of conducting the Census and the dates of the two phases will be 'published in the official gazette tentatively on June 16 as per provision of section 3 of the Census Act 1948'. On April 30, the Union Cabinet had decided to include caste enumeration as part of the next census exercise. The Home Ministry said that for the Union Territory of Ladakh and the non-synchronous snow-bound areas of the UT of Jammu and Kashmir and States of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, the reference date will be 00.00 hours of October 1, 2026. The Census of India is conducted under the provisions of the Census Act, 1948 and the Census Rules, 1990. The last Census of India was conducted in 2011 in two phases. Phase I comprised House Listing (HLO) and was conducted from April 1 to 30 September 2010 and phase II known as the Population Enumeration was done from February 9- February 28, 2011. Justice Varma impeachment: Government reaches out to political parties, wants all on board Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Wednesday underlined the government's resolve to take all political parties on board in moving an impeachment motion against Justice Yashwant Varma, saying corruption in the judiciary cannot be approached through a 'political prism'. He said the government wants the exercise aimed at axing Justice Varma, embroiled in a case of alleged corruption and indicted by a Supreme Court-appointed committee, to be a 'collaborative effort'. Mr. Rijiju told reporters that he has already initiated discussions with all political parties to bring the motion in Parliament's Monsoon session, starting from July 21, against the Allahabad High Court judge. He said the government wants all parties to 'jointly' move the motion to remove Justice Varma. Mr. Rijiju said he will reach out to smaller parties, while all major parties have already been informed about the plan to bring a motion of impeachment against Justice Varma. 'The government feels that the matter related to corruption is not one political party's agenda. It is a stand of all parties to fight against the menace of corruption, whether it is the judiciary or any other space,' he said. The Minister underlined that the government would like to take all political parties on board on the issue, as corruption in the judiciary cannot be approached through a 'political prism'. He said most parties will revert after discussing the issue internally. To a query, Mr. Rijiju said the decision on whether the motion will be brought in the Lok Sabha or the Rajya Sabha will be taken based on the business of each House. According to the Judges (Inquiry) Act of 1968, once a motion to remove a judge is admitted in any of the Houses, the speaker or the chairman, as the case may be, will constitute a three-member committee to investigate the grounds on which the removal (or, in popular term, impeachment) has been sought. The committee consists of the chief justice of India (CJI) or a Supreme Court judge, the chief justice of one of the 25 high courts and a 'distinguished jurist'. Mr. Rijiju said the present case is 'slightly different' as an in-house committee formed by then CJI Sanjiv Khanna has already submitted its report. 'So what is to be done in this matter, we will take a call,' he said. The Minister said the process has to be followed, but how to 'integrate the inquiry already conducted' needs to be decided. 'As per the rule, a committee has to be constituted and then the committee has to submit a report and the report will be tabled in the House and discussions will start to impeach. Here, a committee has already been constituted, not by Parliament. But it cannot be brushed aside' as it was constituted by the CJI, he said. Responding to questions that a committee has to be mandatorily formed under the Judges (Inquiry) Act, Mr. Rijiju said the speaker will take a decision in this regard. He said reconciling the report of the in-house panel and the one under law is a 'secondary matter'. The primary objective is to bring the impeachment motion. Monsoon session announced 47 days ahead to 'run away' from special session on Pahalgam: Congress The Congress on Wednesday alleged that the government has announced the start of the Monsoon session of Parliament 47 days before it is due in order to run away from the demand of the party and the INDIA bloc for an immediate special session to discuss the Pahalgam attack and the Centre's failure to bring the terrorists to justice. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Wednesday said the Monsoon session of Parliament will be held from July 21 to August 12. Punjab police arrest YouTuber for alleged espionage on behalf of Pakistan's ISI Punjab Police on Wednesday said its Special Operation Cell in Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar district had arrested a YouTube influencer on charges of spying for Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav identified the accused as Jasbir Singh alias Jaan Mahal (41), a resident of Mahlan village in Rupnagar district. He was operating a YouTube channel titled JaanMahal Video, purportedly uploading travel and cooking content. Mr. Yadav said the accused had been found associated with Pakistani Intelligence Operative (PIO) Shakir alias Jutt Randhawa, allegedly part of a terror-backed espionage network. He further stated that Jasbir Singh maintained close contact with Jyoti Malhotra, a Haryana-based YouTuber previously arrested for espionage by Haryana Police, and with Ehsan-ur-Rahim alias Danish, a Pakistani national and expelled official from the Pakistan High Commission. Sharing details of the operation, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Ravjot Grewal said police teams had received credible inputs indicating that Jasbir Singh had been in contact with several Pakistan-based entities, including ISI agents, and had allegedly been supplying sensitive information pertaining to the movement of the Indian Army and other internal matters to Pakistani handlers. 'Around 150 Pakistan contacts have been retrieved from the initial mobile phone forensics of the arrested individual. RCB stopped programme ‘within 5 minutes' of learning about Bengaluru stampede, says Karnataka Dy CM Shivakumar
In the wake of the tragic stampede during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) IPL victory celebrations, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has revealed that the team halted their programme almost immediately upon learning of the incident. The stampede near Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium resulted in the deaths of 11 people and left 33 others injured, casting a shadow over the city's celebrations. Speaking to the media, Shivakumar said, 'The team has extended their condolences... I went to the team immediately and gave them direction that this programme should be stopped within 10 minutes... the team agreed and within 5 minutes, they stopped the programme... we sent a lot of Police teams with them since we didn't want any incident to happen...' He further announced that in light of the tragedy, all official programmes scheduled for the following day, except the cabinet meeting, have been postponed. 'No celebrations, including the World Environment Day,' he added. Addressing concerns about crowd control, Shivakumar acknowledged the unforeseen scale of the gathering. 'We never expected such an incident to happen. No political party or officials wanted this, they did their best, but there was an uncontrollable crowd.' He also praised the police for their proactive measures to prevent further incidents. 'Again I'm telling on record. I should compliment my Police officers... morning also, they wanted to have a procession, they wanted to bring a vehicle from the airport itself. Police guided us not to, that's why I rushed to the airport and ensured nothing went wrong. In Vidhana Soudha, also we were very cautious.' The celebrations for the RCB's first-ever IPL win turned tragic on Wednesday as at least 11 persons died and more than 30 were injured in a stampede outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday after thousands of RCB fans gathered to catch a glimpse of the team. "11 are dead and 33 injured due to stampede near Chinnaswamy Stadium in than 2-3 lakh people came, and no one expected this much crowd," Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah said at a press conference. Siddaramaiah orders probe after 11 killed in stampede at RCB victory celebrations in Bengaluru

Addressing the media in the evening, CM Siddaramaiah said the government has ordered a magisterial probe under the supervision of the district collector and expects a report within 15 days. He also announced Rs 10 lakh ex gratia for next of kin/guardians of each of the deceased, and treatment free of cost for the injured. Earlier in the day, crowds continued to swell around the central part of the city as people rushed in from all directions towards Vidhana Soudha where the winning squad was being felicitated by Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah and other members of his cabinet. 'People have gathered outside the stadium and are trying to enter it and many were crushed in this chaos,' said one police officer, requesting anonymity. The RCB team arrived at Bengaluru's HAL airport at 1.30 pm and received by Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar, after which the procession continued till Vidhana Soudha, a distance of about 15 km. People stood alongside the roads to welcome the champions. Cricketers were felicitated on the Vidhana Soudha steps as people blocked roads between the secretariat and the Karnataka High Court. This was to be followed by a victory parade from Vidhana Soudha to Chinnaswamy stadium, a distance of about just a kilometre, in an open-top bus. But permission for it was denied since it would further disrupt traffic. The police officer quoted earlier said that some political leaders demanded the victory celebrations at the last minute which did not give them enough time to prepare. The celebrations were then moved to Chinnaswamy stadium where there were no tickets on sale, entry was 'by invitation only'. Despite this, the crowd tried to enter the stadium.
