Pursuit of key Carlton defender continues to heat up

Luke Beveridge admits every club's "antenna" goes up when valuable free agents become available but has declined to elaborate on the Western Bulldogs' pursuit of Jack Silvagni. A third-generation Carlton player, Silvagni is weighing up a move away after meeting with the Blues' fiercest rivals Collingwood and Essendon. The Bulldogs also have strong interest in the 27-year-old to rectify some of their defensive issues. When questioned about Silvagni, Beveridge didn't want to be caught up in the same situation that engulfed Craig McRae last week. The Magpies coach was criticised by his friend and former Brisbane Lions teammate, Carlton counterpart Michael Voss, for openly discussing meeting with Silvagni. "I think with any free agent like Jack, every club's antenna is up," Beveridge said on Thursday. "But I've always maintained the line of not talking about who we're chatting with behind the scenes, just purely out of respect for our playing group. "Some of our lads still uncontracted, they don't need to be thinking too much about who might take their spot. "And also probably out of respect for someone like Jack ... in that he's got to spend time at his current club, if he is planning to move on." Beveridge mentioned he couldn't be called a "hypocrite", referencing his discussion of Gold Coast star Matt Rowell. Prior to Rowell being officially confirmed to be staying at the Suns earlier this year, Beveridge spoke about how he had tried to woo the star midfielder. But when making those comments, Beveridge already knew Rowell would be staying at Gold Coast and the Bulldogs' pursuit of the former No.1 pick had failed. "Everyone knew that we had met with Matthew because he was thinking of coming back to Melbourne," Beveridge said. But Beveridge made a strong plea to keep swingman Buku Khamis at the Whitten Oval. Khamis' manager this week spoke about exploring his options as he is desperate for a more permanent role at AFL level. The 25-year-old has played 14 games this season, the last two coming more than a month ago when he was used as the sub. Khamis told AAP earlier in the year he saw himself as a defender, but has been used more up forward this year. "We meet a lot of beautiful people in life, but he is one of the great people, Buku Khamis," Beveridge said. "We'd be saddened to lose him. "He has become an influential player. "The balance of our team, playing one more key position player at the moment, our sort of current ideology is that's not going to suit what we want to do. "He is contracted (for 2026), so we're not going to want to lose him. "If he's the next picked key position player at either end, it's very unlikely we're going to want to let him go. "We'll continue to work through that with him."

Brad Fittler responds after Nicho Hynes' eye-opening admission about Origin career

Former NSW coach Brad Fittler has offered some advice to Nicho Hynes after the Cronulla star's candid admission about his disappointing State of Origin career to date. Hynes has only featured twice for the Blues - a Game 1 defeat in the 2023 series under Fittler and a Game 1 loss in 2024 - but has not been picked since. And Hynes conceded this week he could have done more to bond with teammates during his time in Blues camp. "If I was to get picked again I guess I would put myself out there more," Hynes told Nine's 100% Footy. "I probably didn't bond as well with some of the team as I could have. It was definitely a good experience. I would never have a rep jersey and say it was a bad experience. If I never played for NSW again at least I can say I wore the Blues jersey proud, and I tried my best. Sometimes your best isn't good enough and so be it." Hynes emerged as a bit of a scapegoat for many Blues supporters, but it's a little unfair on the former Dally M Medallist considering he was dropped after a loss in the Origin series opener in 2024 that came after an early send-off to Joseph Suaalii. The Blues played the majority of the contest with a man down and Hynes was unable to engineer an against-the-odds victory, before being overlooked for the remaining two games of the series that NSW won to claim the shield. In the previous series in 2023, Hynes was played out of position when he came off the bench late in Game 1 and was widely criticised for a defensive lapse that allowed the Maroons to score a match-deciding try. Despite those previous struggles, Fittler believes Hynes 'will get another chance' to play Origin footy again if he keeps playing well for the Sharks. But the former NSW coach agreed with Hynes that it's crucial for any Origin squad members to go out of their way to try and connect with teammates. And Fittler offered some telling advice for any other future Origin stars that might find themselves in the same situation as the Sharks halfback. Brad Fittler's message to Nicho Hynes after Origin admission "The one bit of advice I'd give to any player is just get out of your room," he said on Nine's Freddy and The Eighth. "Be with the team, don't be in your room - if you're in your room, you're on your own. "I can't go back, I'd have no idea how Nicho was in those camps or if he got on with people or if he had some friends going in there, which sometimes helps. You've just got to force yourself to be with other people and learn about them. "He (Hynes) played in the Origin game where (Joseph) Suaalii got sent off early and they ended up getting beat - he started in that game. We picked him in a game where he came off the bench for the last 10 or 15 minutes (in 2023), but I can't remember the actual camp. "You can be pretty hard on yourself and if you get to play a rep game and you lose, it's a bad experience because it's intense and you want to win so bad. Just keep playing well and you will get another chance." Blues legend Andrew Johns admitted it can be 'intimidating' for players to come into Origin camp and make their presence felt in front of more experienced players. And former NSW hooker Api Koroisau said the 10-day Origin camps don't offer players much time to form really meaningful connections with teammates. "One moment can change everything - it can be a great experience or the best thing ever or it can be really hard on you."

Mark Geyer's son joins rival club as Roosters young gun set for surprise switch

Mavrik Geyer, son of Penrith great Mark Geyer, has signed for the Wests Tigers after finding himself on the fringe of the Panthers squad with plenty of depth in their second-row stocks as a Roosters young gun is also set to join Benji Marshall. Geyer has played 14 times for the Panthers since the start of 2024, but hasn't locked down a permanent role having bounced back and forth from the NSW Cup. Geyer is contracted until the end of the current season, but has taken up a new deal with the Wests Tigers under Benji Marshall for 2026. Geyer has only played twice for the Panthers in 2025 with his game time restricted. The Panthers recently confirmed versatile back-rower Luke Garner will remain at the club after reports he was able to negotiate with rivals. And Penrith are also looking to extend Lindsay Smith's contract. The Panthers are clearly prioritising the retention of a number of their regular NRL stars, which has seen Geyer depart. And the Tigers have jumped on the opportunity to sign the 24-year-old to strengthen their back-row depth. "Thanks for everything Penrith fans. I truely love you all. Still extremely focused on the 2025 season and helping the lads chase that five-peat," he wrote on social. Speaking about his Tigers deal, Geyer said he was looking forward to working with coach Marshall. 'Very excited for the 2026 season to rip in and prove myself in the orange and black. Come pre-season I'll be hungry and ready to go,' Geyer said in a statement. 'It's a great time to be involved with the club and the chance to work under Benji and be a part of what the West Tigers are building is something I'm really looking forward to." Geyer represented the Panthers just like his father did who is a club legend. Mark Geyer played 135 games for the Panthers, across two stints, having scored 19 tries and won the 1991 premiership. Samuela Fainu and Alex Seyfarth have been used in the second-row this year with the Tigers signing Kai Pearce-Paul for 2026. The Tigers are already making big moves for next season as they wait to see what Adam Doueihi does with his offer. Doueihi has attracted offers of around $400,000 a season from rival clubs, but the Tigers are hoping he remains with them. While they wait to see what happens with Doueihi, they also appear to have targeted a young Roosters star. Ethan Roberts reported for Wests Tigers move The Tigers don't seem to be satisfied with their backrow depth having also targeted Roosters youngster Ethan Roberts, according to Code Sports. The Roosters prospect has played 12 games for the NSW Cup side having scored two tries. Roberts is yet to feature under coach Trent Robinson in 2025. ✨ ROOKIE SPOTLIGHT: Highlights of Wests Tigers' newest signing Ethan Roberts, who is set to join the club in 2026 from the Sydney Roosters @zerotackle 🐯 Similar to Angus Crichton, Roberts is damaging on the edge in attack and hits the line with precision and power — Ethan Lee Chalk (@EthanLeeChalk) August 6, 2025 And the Tigers appear to be keen on bringing the young star over and giving him more game time. The 22-year-old's exit would be a blow to the Roosters, but they also have solid stock in that position with Angus Crichton and Siua Wong starting this weekend. They also have used Salesi Foketi in the second-row. But Roberts appears close to signing with the Tigers who are now set for the 2026 season.
