MoUs worth ₹4.18 trillion unveiled at Rising North East Summit: Scindia
The summit was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Bharat Mandapam in the national capital on Friday. It aims to highlight the region as a land of opportunity, attracting global and domestic investment, and bringing together key stakeholders, investors and policymakers on a single platform. "For the first time, a joint programme for all eight states of the north east is underway. Roadshows were held for it in cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Indore. Meetings were held with various industrial groups. As a result of this effort, a world-class investment summit was organized. Memorandums of Understanding worth Rs 4.18 lakh crore have been announced," Scindia told reporters on Friday. "Each state received investment proposals of Rs 20,000 crore. Along with industrial group leaders, new entrepreneurs from the eight states and ambassadors from 50 countries participated in the summit. We are committed to ensure these investments take off," said Scindia, the Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region. The main focus sectors of investment promotion include tourism and hospitality, ago-food processing, textiles, handlooms and handicrafts, healthcare, education and skill development as well as information technology.

Bengaluru: Union Minister Pralhad Joshi has welcomed the central government's announcement that a proposal by Aequs Infra's Hubballi Durable Goods Cluster Pvt Ltd to set up a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for electronic components has become a reality. "This is a matter of joy and pride for North Karnataka, especially for the industrialists of Hubballi-Dharwad," Mr Joshi, the Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and New and Renewable Energy, said in a post on X. The SEZ has been notified in the gazette by the central government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Union minister said. "Recognising the need for electronics manufacturing in this region, I had requested the Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, to approve it. Out of the total 391 acres of land in Aequs Infra's Hubballi Durable Goods Cluster, 28 acres have now been declared as an SEZ for electronics. In the coming days, as new electronics industries arrive, there is scope to expand the SEZ further," said Mr Joshi, whose Lok Sabha constituency is Dharwad. Vijayawada: The high court on Wednesday observed that giving incentives to IT companies should be seen in the broader perspective of employment generation instead of losing money on land allocations. The bench further noted that Andhra Pradesh will remain an agrarian state without considerable investments in industry. One N N Grace, President of the Society for Protection of Civil Properties and Environment, Visakhapatnam chapter, moved the High Court with a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), challenging the land allotments made to Cognizant at Rs 0.99 per acre. Jada Sravan, who argued on her behalf, said that the land allotted to Cognizant is valued at Rs 1109 crore, but the state govt allotted it for nothing. He said that the sale of land is not permissible according to APIIC rules. Arguing on behalf of the state govt, special govt pleader S Pranati said that the land allotments have been made in accordance with the state industrial policy. She sought time to file counters in all petitions pertaining to land allotments. Considering the arguments on both sides, the High Court tagged the matter with other petitions. Similar petitions were filed earlier, challenging the land allotments to TCS and LuLu Group.

Thiruvananthapuram: Residents are facing mounting transport woes after KSRTC redeployed more than half of its city circular electric buses to inter-district routes. While intended to expand sustainable travel options, the move has left urban commuters grappling with unreliable services and increased costs, directly impacting their daily lives and livelihoods. In 2023, under the Smart City initiative, KSRTC launched 113 electric buses for its city circular network in partnership with the corporation. The buses offered a flat fare of Rs 10 per ride or Rs 150 for a 24-hour pass, providing affordable and dependable connectivity across neighborhoods. Unlike KSRTC's regular distance-based fare system, these buses ensured budget-friendly travel regardless of distance. However, with over 50% of the fleet now diverted to routes connecting Thiruvananthapuram with Neyyattinkara, Vellarada and Kollam, the remaining city services struggle to meet demand. Former transport minister Antony Raju, who introduced 163 electric buses during his tenure, criticized the diversion. "These buses were meant exclusively for the city and were an instant hit, especially for residents in interior areas who could rely on services every 10 minutes. Diverting them to other districts is unfair and needs immediate rectification," he told TOI.
