Church leads Mandela Day clean-up at taxi rank
Under the 2025 Mandela Day theme, 'It is still in your hands to combat poverty and inequality,' the Mondlo community came together to express heartfelt gratitude to local businesses for their ongoing support.
The campaign highlighted the important role played by Mondlo Mall, SuperSpar, and the nearby taxi rank, all of which have remained strong pillars of community support over the years.
Congregants chose the taxi rank as it is a high-traffic area with many shops, but it still experiences incidents of illegal dumping.
The event was opened by a short prayer led by Mrs Mzila, Super Spar Fresh Produce Manager, who expressed her thanks for the campaign, noting that dumping turns into an 'excellent breeding ground for germs that cause numerous illnesses.'
Reverend Skhakhane, Spar's assistant manager, gave a brief history of the business, adding that Spar's is interested in the welfare of the community it serves and that they aim to make a positive contribution wherever possible.'
The store is already assisting needy and bereaved families and provides employment opportunities to local communities.
Rank Manager, Mr Khumalo, said he was 'very happy and humbled to see the church assisting in keeping the rank clean, safer and more dignified for the community'.
'This clean-up campaign will create awareness among all community members to dispose of waste appropriately.'
The young people from the church collected all the litter and removed the illegal dumping site. All waste was placed at a designated pickup point for easy collection, while Skhakhane thanked everyone for a successful event and requested a prayer chain to ensure that the community is kept safe and healthy.

Chefs with Compassion breaks Mandela Day soup record, serving over 600 000 meals
Chefs with Compassion has made history this Mandela Day by preparing 142 462 litres of soup, providing over 609 000 warm meals to communities in need across South Africa. Chefs with Compassion (CWC), the organisation known for turning surplus food into meals, has made history with its 2025 Mandela Day initiative, cooking up an unprecedented 142 462 litres of soup, nearly 40 000 litres more than its 2024 total. This translates into over 609 000 warm meals shared with communities in need across the country. The annual '67000litres for Mandela Day' campaign unites community kitchens, chefs, culinary students, corporates, and volunteers with one mission: to feed the nation using food that would otherwise be wasted. 'This year's success has been phenomenal,' said Chef Coo Pillay, founding director of Chefs with Compassion and president of SA Chefs. He noted that the Tsebo Group, which contributed over 24 000 litres through their nationwide kitchens, played a standout role. 'Their commitment shows what's possible when an organisation truly embraces compassion,' he added. More than 80 000 litres of the soup were prepared by Chefs with Compassion's 32 community hubs, which operate year-round. These local kitchens are often the unsung heroes, quietly sustaining communities long after Mandela Day ends. 'Mandela Day is our most visible moment, but for the people in our network, this work never stops,' said Hanneke van Linge, co-founder of CWC and founder of Nosh Food Rescue. 'Feeding over 600 000 people with food that would otherwise go to waste is not only possible, it's powerful. It's proof of what we can do when compassion drives collective action.'

New owl boxes support wildlife-friendly pest control at Gauteng SPCAs
In celebration of Mandela Day, EcoSolutions and donated and professionally installed owl boxes at seven SPCA branches across Gauteng, including the Edenvale SPCA. This environmentally focused initiative was launched to honour the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela through a project rooted in sustainability, wildlife conservation, and appreciation for the vital work undertaken by the SPCA. EcoSolutions, and the SPCA have enjoyed a collaborative partnership since the early 2000s, working together on ethical wildlife management programmes that benefit both local communities and ecosystems. ALSO READ: Bedfordview SPCA takes legal action over false cruelty claims 'Even the previously installed owl box proved to be incredibly helpful, and we're grateful to now have two new owl boxes on our premises,' said Marita Acar, manager of the Edenvale SPCA. Each owl box donated was installed by the EcoSolutions team, ensuring safe, secure nesting spaces for owl populations. According to project coordinator Itumeleng Maroga, the goal of the initiative was twofold: to offer owls safe nesting habitats and to promote a natural, poison-free method of rodent control. ALSO READ: Join the Edenvale SPCA AGM on July 5 'Owls are highly efficient predators, capable of consuming thousands of rodents each year. 'Encouraging their presence is a powerful and sustainable step in reducing rodent populations without relying on harmful poisons or chemicals,' explained Maroga. He added that the project comes at a crucial time. 'The installed owl box will help manage the rat problem we face on our premises. As much as we have cats, they haven't been effective,' noted Charmain Southon, manager at Alberton SPCA. highlighted that the recent national ban on several widely used rodenticides marks a significant victory for South African wildlife. These poisons have posed a serious risk to non-target species—particularly owls—who often suffer fatal secondary poisoning after consuming contaminated rodents. What we release into the ecosystem inevitably makes its way up the food chain,' the organisation stated. Their philosophy promotes using nature to restore natural balance, ensuring that predators like owls are safeguarded, not harmed, by pest control measures. 'We are proud to partner with organisations such as the SPCA,' said Valentino Crowder of EcoSolutions and Itumeleng Maroga of EcoSolutions and encourage individuals and organisations to seek meaningful and long-lasting ways to contribute to Mandela Day and support sustainable environmental initiatives year-round.
