Church leads Mandela Day clean-up at taxi rank
The Mandela Day spirit was invoked on Friday when members of Mondlo Methodist Church conducted a clean-up campaign at the local taxi rank near SuperSpar.
Under the 2025 Mandela Day theme, 'It is still in your hands to combat poverty and inequality,' the Mondlo community came together to express heartfelt gratitude to local businesses for their ongoing support.
The campaign highlighted the important role played by Mondlo Mall, SuperSpar, and the nearby taxi rank, all of which have remained strong pillars of community support over the years.
Congregants chose the taxi rank as it is a high-traffic area with many shops, but it still experiences incidents of illegal dumping.
The event was opened by a short prayer led by Mrs Mzila, Super Spar Fresh Produce Manager, who expressed her thanks for the campaign, noting that dumping turns into an 'excellent breeding ground for germs that cause numerous illnesses.'
Reverend Skhakhane, Spar's assistant manager, gave a brief history of the business, adding that Spar's is interested in the welfare of the community it serves and that they aim to make a positive contribution wherever possible.'
The store is already assisting needy and bereaved families and provides employment opportunities to local communities.
Rank Manager, Mr Khumalo, said he was 'very happy and humbled to see the church assisting in keeping the rank clean, safer and more dignified for the community'.
'This clean-up campaign will create awareness among all community members to dispose of waste appropriately.'
The young people from the church collected all the litter and removed the illegal dumping site. All waste was placed at a designated pickup point for easy collection, while Skhakhane thanked everyone for a successful event and requested a prayer chain to ensure that the community is kept safe and healthy.
