Woman passenger suffers head injury as middle berth collapses on her
A woman passenger suffered a head injury after the middle berth of a sleeper class coach fell while she was asleep. The incident happened on Train No. 22651 Chennai-Palakkad Express shortly after it crossed Jolarpet early on Monday. The victim's husband alleged that first aid was not provided by the railway authorities for more than an hour until the train reached Salem where an ambulance was arranged.
According to railway sources, Suria Murugan, 39, of Chennai, was sleeping on berth no. 1 (lower berth) when the unoccupied middle berth suddenly fell on her around 1.15 a.m. Other passengers alerted her husband Jyothi Jayashankar who was sleeping in another coach. On seeing Ms. Suria bleeding with a head injury, he sought medical assistance from the Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) and other railway employees on the train.
'There was no first aid kit in the train. They did not even provide a cotton roll. The TTE said we could get down at the next stop [Morappur] and seek help there. But what can we do at an unknown place in the middle of the night? My wife managed to control the bleeding with a piece of cloth and we travelled for almost an hour-and-a-half so far as Salem,' Mr. Jayashankar told The Hindu.
On arrival at Salem around 2.40 a.m., the ambulance paramedics did basic dressing and shifted Ms. Suria to the Government Hospital. 'We later took an autorickshaw and went to a private hospital and got admitted there. My wife had a deep cut on the forehead and underwent sutures. There was no assistance from the Railways. It is shocking that a train with about 1,000 passengers does not have even paramedics or a first aid box,' he said.
Railway sources said the chain and locking mechanism of the middle berth was found to be normal when inspected at Dindigul Junction. The coach was allowed to run through the service without any change. Periodic overhaul of the ICF-designed sleeper class coach, made in 2005, was done on March 16 this year in Chennai.
Railways blames passenger
Asked about the circumstances that led to the incident, Southern Railway spokesperson M. Senthamil Selvan said the 'berth may have fallen owing to improper locking of the berth hook by the passenger'. The coach was 19 years old and fit for operation. A total of 154 ICF-designed rakes were operational in the zone, and a complete migration to LHB rakes would happen in three years, he said.
On Monday evening, the Chief Public Relations Officer said medical assistance was promptly arranged by the commercial and medical control staff, but the passenger refused to disembark at Morappur. 'The unfortunate incident appears to have occurred owing to the passenger's improper handling of the chain link, which is the designated locking mechanism for the middle berth,' the CPRO said.

The train, usually scheduled to depart at 6 am, was delayed to 8 am due to maintenance issues caused by heavy overnight rains. According to railway sources, a commercial department employee, who was serving as an on-board ticket checker, received information that a passenger in compartment C2 had fallen ill. At that time, the train had just left Cuttack station. Passengers alleged that the train had been standing for a long time before entering Cuttack. 'After the train left Cuttack, my colleague went to the washroom. When he returned, he started feeling uneasy and then fell unconscious. We tried to obtain an oxygen cylinder for him but could not arrange one. Train staff and RPF personnel reached the coach after some time. Some people performed CPR on Bhowmick," Majumdar was quoted as saying in the Times of India report. Railway officials informed the passenger's companions that there was a railway hospital near Khurda Road station and arrangements were being made to take the patient there. However, the passenger's companion and fellow travellers began protesting loudly. Eventually, it was decided to take the passenger to doctors at Bhubaneswar station. Incidentally, it takes 40 minutes to travel from Cuttack to Bhubaneswar, with six stations in between. The journey from Bhubaneswar to Khurda Road takes 18 minutes, with two stations in between. Passengers questioned why the train couldn't have stopped at one of the many stations between Cuttack and Bhubaneswar to arrange hospital care for the passenger. The Railways responded that the train is halted only where doctors and ambulances are available. The train reached Bhubaneswar at 1:40 pm. 'We arranged for a private ambulance to transport him to the hospital. Unfortunately, doctors declared him 'brought dead' upon arrival. He had been on medication to manage his blood sugar levels," Majumdar stated. After being pronounced dead at 2:55 pm, the body was moved to the mortuary. 'The hospital notified the police about the death. The body will be sent to Capital Hospital for a post-mortem in the presence of family members," a source informed Times of India. Bhowmick's relatives were en route to Bhubaneswar. According to East Coast Railway sources, immediate action was taken to provide medical assistance to the passenger. 'RPF staff in Bhubaneswar accompanied them to the hospital," a source added. This incident has sparked further debate on the absence of onboard medical staff on premium trains like the Vande Bharat Express. The railways maintain that doctors are not typically assigned to any train and that the events in the C2 coach can be reviewed through CCTV footage.

IIT Delhi second year student found dead in hostel room
An IIT Delhi student was found dead in the college's hostel premises in New Delhi, on Wednesday, according to the police.. A call was received at Kishangarh Police Station regarding a student not opening the door of a hostel room in IIT Delhi, the police officials immediately reached the incident spot. On reaching the room, it was found that the door was locked from inside. Fire service personnel also reached the location, and upon their assistance, the door was forcibly opened. Upon entering the room, a male student, was found lying on the bed in an unconscious state. He was declared dead on the spot by IIT Doctors. During the initial enquiry, it was revealed that the deceased was a 2nd-year student of Biomechanical Engineering at IIT Delhi, according to the police. As per preliminary information, the deceased went back to his room after having dinner on Monday. On Tuesday, he was not seen or contacted by any of his fellow students, which raised suspicion. Consequently, the matter was reported to the security staff who informed the police. There were no visible external injuries found on the body. However, some vomit was observed on the floor. The Crime Team and Forensic Team were called at the spot for further investigation and examination. After the necessary legal and procedural formalities, the dead body was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital Mortuary for post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death. Villupuram boy, girl who eloped to Chennai, found dead in house
CHENNAI: Two 19-year-old students, who were studying at a college in Villupuram, were found dead in a house they had moved-in together in Perambur 10 days back. The girl's body was found with injuries and the boy appeared to have died by suicide. The ICF police have registered a case of unnatural death under section 194 of BNSS and are probing the cause of death. The deceased were identified as S Akash and T Abinaya, both belonging to the same caste from Kannarampattu village in Villupuram district. They were in the third-year of computer science course at the Arignar Anna Arts and Science College, and had come to Chennai under the pretext of finding work during semester holidays. The families of both the victims reportedly did not know that they had gone to Chennai together. One of the neighbours in Perambur told TNIE that the two rented the place on May 26 with the help of a friend who was familiar in the neighbourhood. 'They told us that they got married after leaving their home since they were facing issues from their families,' the neighbour said. Another neighbour said she checked the place since there was no activity since Monday morning. After discovering the two were dead, the neighbours alerted the police. The police sent the bodies for postmortem to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital. Abinaya's family members, who were at the hospital, alleged the boy may have killed the girl inadvertently during a fight and later killed himself. They refuted claims that they had created any issues and said they were unaware of the two being in a relationship. ()
