SWR adds 5 coaches to Bengaluru-Karwar Panchaganga Express temporarily
The South Western Railway (SWR) has decided to augment Train No. 16595/596 KSR Bengaluru-Karwar Panchaganga Express with five additional coaches on temporary basis to fill the void resulting from cancellation of day train services on the sector for five months. Panchaganga Express runs with 14 LHB coaches — one first AC-cum-2-tier AC, one 2-tier AC, one 3-tier AC, seven sleeper class, two general second class, one luggage-cum-brake van and one generator car coaches. The SWR will add two 3-tier AC Economy, two general second class and one sleeper class coaches with effect from June 11 from Bengaluru-end, and from June 12 from Karwar-end, taking the total to 19 coaches. This decision comes in the backdrop of Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Kota Srinivas Poojary and Kumta MLA Dinakar Shetty demanding an additional overnight service between Karwar and Bengaluru during the time the day rains remain cancelled. SWR had cancelled Train Nos. 16575/576 and 16539/540 Yeshwantpur-Mangaluru Junction tri weekly Gomateshwara Express and weekly, and Train No. 16515/516 Yeshwantpur-Karwar tri-weekly express services for 154 days from May 31 to facilitate electrification work on the Sakleshpur-Subrahmanya Road ghat section. Passenger associations of Kundapura and Uttara Kannada have said that SWR responded to their demand for adding more coaches to the Panchaganga without affecting the timetable. Coach augmentation would result in addition of about 400 seats, they said. Augmentation of coaches should not affect punctuality Stating that the tight timetable, leaving Bengaluru at 6.50 p.m. to reach Karwar at 8.25 a.m. and leaving Karwar at 6 p.m. to reach Bengaluru at 7 a.m., was the reason for the Panchaganga Express becoming the most-sought-after service in the coast, passenger associations have urged the Railways to ensure the timetable is not affected by augmentation of coaches. The crossing of Trains 16595/596 after coach augmentation would happen at Subrahmanya Road station because Siribagilu station on the ghat section where the trains cross at present, cannot accommodate trains with more than 15 coaches. The patrons do not want the change in crossing to delay the Karwar-Bengaluru trains reaching their destination. Similarly, patrons of Dakshina Kannada have demanded that the changed crossing should not affect the running of KSR Bengaluru-Kannur (Train 16511) overnight express. G. Karthik Kamath, a patron, said the SWR should augment coaches on Trains 16585/586 SMVT Bengaluru-Murdeshwar-SMVT Bengaluru and 16511/512 KSR Bengaluru-Kannur too to offset the cancellation of day trains.

Railway Minister Vaishnaw says redevelopment of 500 more stations to be completed by 2027
NEW DELHI: Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the driving force behind the remarkable transformation of Indian Railways over the past 11 years. Speaking at the dedication ceremony of 103 Amrit Bharat stations to the nation in Bikaner, Rajasthan, Vaishnaw said, 'In the last 11 years our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has done unprecedented reforms in the basic structure of the railway. More than 34,000 km of rail tracks has been made in these 11 years.' The Railway Minister described the laying of new rail tracks during this period as a record-breaking feat, surpassing even what a developed nation like Germany had achieved. 'More tracks have been laid down in India in these 11 years than in the entire Germany,' he said. 'Under the constant monitoring and visionary leadership of the Prime Minister, India has electrified 47,000 rkm,' he claimed, adding that the Vande Bharat, Namo Bharat, and Amrit Bharat series of trains represent the new generation of railway vehicles. He further said that Indian Railways has also undertaken the conversion of old ICF coaches to LHB coaches in mission mode, resulting in the creation of 42,000 new LHB coaches over the past 11 years.

Woman passenger suffers head injury as middle berth collapses on her
A woman passenger suffered a head injury after the middle berth of a sleeper class coach fell while she was asleep. The incident happened on Train No. 22651 Chennai-Palakkad Express shortly after it crossed Jolarpet early on Monday. The victim's husband alleged that first aid was not provided by the railway authorities for more than an hour until the train reached Salem where an ambulance was arranged. According to railway sources, Suria Murugan, 39, of Chennai, was sleeping on berth no. 1 (lower berth) when the unoccupied middle berth suddenly fell on her around 1.15 a.m. Other passengers alerted her husband Jyothi Jayashankar who was sleeping in another coach. On seeing Ms. Suria bleeding with a head injury, he sought medical assistance from the Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) and other railway employees on the train. 'There was no first aid kit in the train. They did not even provide a cotton roll. The TTE said we could get down at the next stop [Morappur] and seek help there. But what can we do at an unknown place in the middle of the night? My wife managed to control the bleeding with a piece of cloth and we travelled for almost an hour-and-a-half so far as Salem,' Mr. Jayashankar told The Hindu. On arrival at Salem around 2.40 a.m., the ambulance paramedics did basic dressing and shifted Ms. Suria to the Government Hospital. 'We later took an autorickshaw and went to a private hospital and got admitted there. My wife had a deep cut on the forehead and underwent sutures. There was no assistance from the Railways. It is shocking that a train with about 1,000 passengers does not have even paramedics or a first aid box,' he said. Railway sources said the chain and locking mechanism of the middle berth was found to be normal when inspected at Dindigul Junction. The coach was allowed to run through the service without any change. Periodic overhaul of the ICF-designed sleeper class coach, made in 2005, was done on March 16 this year in Chennai. Railways blames passenger Asked about the circumstances that led to the incident, Southern Railway spokesperson M. Senthamil Selvan said the 'berth may have fallen owing to improper locking of the berth hook by the passenger'. The coach was 19 years old and fit for operation. A total of 154 ICF-designed rakes were operational in the zone, and a complete migration to LHB rakes would happen in three years, he said. On Monday evening, the Chief Public Relations Officer said medical assistance was promptly arranged by the commercial and medical control staff, but the passenger refused to disembark at Morappur. 'The unfortunate incident appears to have occurred owing to the passenger's improper handling of the chain link, which is the designated locking mechanism for the middle berth,' the CPRO said.
