
SWR adds 5 coaches to Bengaluru-Karwar Panchaganga Express temporarily
The South Western Railway (SWR) has decided to augment Train No. 16595/596 KSR Bengaluru-Karwar Panchaganga Express with five additional coaches on temporary basis to fill the void resulting from cancellation of day train services on the sector for five months.
Panchaganga Express runs with 14 LHB coaches — one first AC-cum-2-tier AC, one 2-tier AC, one 3-tier AC, seven sleeper class, two general second class, one luggage-cum-brake van and one generator car coaches. The SWR will add two 3-tier AC Economy, two general second class and one sleeper class coaches with effect from June 11 from Bengaluru-end, and from June 12 from Karwar-end, taking the total to 19 coaches.
This decision comes in the backdrop of Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Kota Srinivas Poojary and Kumta MLA Dinakar Shetty demanding an additional overnight service between Karwar and Bengaluru during the time the day rains remain cancelled.
SWR had cancelled Train Nos. 16575/576 and 16539/540 Yeshwantpur-Mangaluru Junction tri weekly Gomateshwara Express and weekly, and Train No. 16515/516 Yeshwantpur-Karwar tri-weekly express services for 154 days from May 31 to facilitate electrification work on the Sakleshpur-Subrahmanya Road ghat section.
Passenger associations of Kundapura and Uttara Kannada have said that SWR responded to their demand for adding more coaches to the Panchaganga without affecting the timetable. Coach augmentation would result in addition of about 400 seats, they said.
Augmentation of coaches should not affect punctuality
Stating that the tight timetable, leaving Bengaluru at 6.50 p.m. to reach Karwar at 8.25 a.m. and leaving Karwar at 6 p.m. to reach Bengaluru at 7 a.m., was the reason for the Panchaganga Express becoming the most-sought-after service in the coast, passenger associations have urged the Railways to ensure the timetable is not affected by augmentation of coaches.
The crossing of Trains 16595/596 after coach augmentation would happen at Subrahmanya Road station because Siribagilu station on the ghat section where the trains cross at present, cannot accommodate trains with more than 15 coaches. The patrons do not want the change in crossing to delay the Karwar-Bengaluru trains reaching their destination.
Similarly, patrons of Dakshina Kannada have demanded that the changed crossing should not affect the running of KSR Bengaluru-Kannur (Train 16511) overnight express.
G. Karthik Kamath, a patron, said the SWR should augment coaches on Trains 16585/586 SMVT Bengaluru-Murdeshwar-SMVT Bengaluru and 16511/512 KSR Bengaluru-Kannur too to offset the cancellation of day trains.

South Western Railway to upgrade tunnel radio for safer operations on Braganza Ghats, one of India's toughest rail sections
In a significant move to boost safety and operational efficiency in one of India's most challenging railway sections, South Western Railway (SWR) is set to implement an advanced Tunnel Radio Communication System in the Castle Rock–Kulem stretch of the Braganza Ghats, located on the Karnataka-Goa border within the Western Ghats. The 26-km section cuts through the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is known for its steep 1-in-37 ruling gradient, dense forest cover, and iconic monsoon-fed Dudhsagar Falls. The line, which includes remote stations such as Caranzol, Dudhsagar, and Sonalium, serves both tourists and railway personnel. However, according to SWR officials, the lack of road access and a persistent 'radio black-out' inside the 16 tunnels on this route have long posed safety and communication challenges. Speaking to The Hindu, Manjunath Kanmadi, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of South Western Railway, said, 'We are installing a cutting-edge radio communication network that brings four separate railway communication channels — VHF, Locotrol, GSM-R and LTE-R — into every tunnel. This is being done using optical-fibre backbones, high-gain repeaters and leaky-feeder cables.' The total cost of the project is ₹12.21 crore, and it is expected to be completed by October 2025. Mr. Kanmadi explained that the system will ensure continuous communication between train drivers, guards, station masters, and control rooms, even inside the tunnels. 'This will significantly improve safety during operations in this ecologically sensitive and remote area. Maintenance teams will also be able to call for assistance instantly,' the he added. Radio system used in UK, Japan rail networks Officials say that the technology mirrors global best practices. SWR's approach is similar to those implemented in leading railway systems around the world. 'The UK's Crossrail (Elizabeth Line) has employed leaky-feeder cables and GSM-R for uninterrupted communication inside London's tunnels. In Japan, the Shinkansen network has tested LTE-R and 5G systems for ultra-fast, low-latency train control in tunnels. Metro systems such as the London Underground also use long leaky-feeder antennas to maintain consistent radio coverage. By adopting this world-class architecture, SWR is joining a group of railways using top-tier communication systems,' Mr. Kanmadi noted. The benefits of the project are that continuous radio coverage will enable quicker emergency responses in the event of a breakdown or landslip. According to officials, it will also allow better coordination between lead and banking locomotives, which is vital on the steep gradients of the ghats. Passengers will benefit from safer journeys, and staff will have a more secure and responsive working environment.

Departure of Vijayapura Express from Mangaluru changed from 2.35 p.m. to 4.45 p.m.
South Western Railway (SWR) has revised the departure of Mangaluru Central-Vijayaprua Express Special from 2.35 p.m. to 4.45 p.m. with effect from July 1 owing to consistent demand by patrons. It has also extended the service of Vijayapura-Mangaluru Central-Vijayapura Express Special (Train No. 07377/07378) for another six months, from July to December, by way of a notification dated June 5. The Railway Ministry did not regularise the service despite huge demand, and continues to operate them as special trains entailing patrons to pay higher fares. The early afternoon departure introduced in the recent timetable was a major inconvenience, and the correction would be a huge relief to people. The revised timing is expected to benefit pilgrims from Kukke Subrahmanya and Dharmasthala, and also for those travelling from Mangaluru, Bantwal and Puttur towards Hassan, Arsikere, Davangere, Hubballi, Gadag, and Vijayapura. It said the change was the result of collective efforts of railway activists, public forums and strong support from elected representatives who raised the issue with the Mysuru and Hubballi railway divisions. The forum reiterated the demand for regularising the services for the benefit of the common man, who is forced to pay higher fare as the train continues to operate as Train on Demand (ToD).
