SCZone, China's Hightex to build $17 mln fabric plant - Markets & Companies
The Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) has signed a $17m agreement with China's Hightex Industrial to build a decorative fabric plant in the Qantara West Industrial Zone, boosting textile exports and deepening industrial ties with China.
SCZone chairman Walid Gamal El-Din and Hightex chairman Wenlong Lu signed the deal.
The self-financed facility will span 65,000 square-metres and aim to produce over 20 million metres of fabric annually, all for export. It is expected to create around 300 direct jobs.
Gamal El-Din said the plant will be located near existing textile ventures in Qantara West, which it described as a 'success story' that has quickly attracted international investment in the fabric and garment sectors.
With this deal, the number of contracted projects in Qantara West rises to 20, with total pledged investments of $596.5 million and more than 27,600 jobs.
Gamal El-Din highlighted the zone's strategic location—between the Red Sea and Mediterranean ports and near population centres with available labour—as key to its appeal for labour-intensive industries.
Founded in 1990 in Hangzhou, Hightex supplies decorative fabrics and home furnishings globally. It has research and sales hubs in the US and manufacturing operations in China and Vietnam.
The agreement is the latest in a series of China-backed textile projects in the zone. On Sunday, SCZone signed a $15 million deal with Chinese firm GS Global Sourcing to establish a ready-made garment factory in Qantara West.
In March, Chinese company Jiangsu Guotai signed a $10 million usufruct contract for another garment plant in the same zone. The plant is expected to create 2,000 jobs and export all its production.
In late 2024, SCZone also broke ground on a $51million ready-made garment project in partnership with Turkey's Eroğlu Global Holding.

OPEN// FM says Egypt eager to enhance relations with China
CAIRO, June 4 (MENA) – Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates Badr Abdelatty said Wednesday Egypt wants to work with the Chinese side to elevate relations to broader horizons. This came during his meeting with Special Envoy of the Chinese Government on the Middle East Issue Zhai Jun. Abdelatty highlighted that over a decade has passed since the announcement of the comprehensive strategic partnership between Egypt and China, which was made by their presidents in December 2014, noting the remarkable development in bilateral relations across various sectors in recent years, foreign ministry spokesperson Tamim Khallaf said. The minister praised China's contribution to infrastructure projects in Egypt and affirmed Egypt's eagerness to attract more Chinese investments and companies. He presented the available investment opportunities in Egypt and the efforts made by the government to support the private sector within an integrated plan for economic development. Minister Abdelatty briefed the Chinese envoy on Egypt's mediation efforts to reach a ceasefire in Gaza, in cooperation with the United States and Qatar, stressing the need for the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid to alleviate the humanitarian crisis affecting the Palestinian people. He applauded China's balanced stance on the Palestinian issue and reiterated the need for the Palestinian people to obtain their legitimate rights, foremost among which is the right to establish an independent Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967 borders, with Al-Quds (East Jerusalem) as its capital. The meeting also addressed several regional issues, including developments in Lebanon, Syria, and Sudan, as well as the security of navigation in the Red Sea. (MENA) A I E/R E E

Chinese Drilling Technology Contributes in Expanding Egypt's Agricultural Lands
Rana Atef On Monday, Global Times , which is one of TV Brics partners, reported that Egypt's Western Desert barren lands are gradually being transformed into fertile fields by the advanced Chinese well-drilling technology. The well drilling project, implemented by the Egyptian branch of a Chinese oil and gas company, became part of a mega program to expand agricultural land by developing deserts. This project is an example of sustainable development for arid regions and demonstrates the potential of international cooperation in food security and environmental restoration. The project is being implemented as part of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Egypt has expanded beyond infrastructure projects to now include the agricultural sector, technology, and industry. The company began operations in Egypt in 2016 and has since drilled more than 680 wells nationwide. In the Owainat, 63 deep wells were drilled in less than a year, despite extreme weather and geological conditions. Experts emphasise that such projects are key to Egypt's sustainable development. China Considers Ordering Hundreds of Aircraft from Airbus
Israa Farhan China is reportedly preparing to place a major order for hundreds of aircraft from European aerospace giant Airbus, according to sources cited by Bloomberg News. The potential deal is expected to be finalised next month, coinciding with a high-profile visit by European Union leaders to Beijing to celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations between China and the EU. The discussions are still ongoing, with Chinese airlines negotiating the exact number and types of planes to be purchased. Sources indicate the order could include around 300 aircraft, covering both narrow-body and wide-body models, with estimates ranging between 200 and 500 planes in total. While the talks remain fluid and could either extend over a longer period or fall through, the timing aligns closely with visits from French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and other European leaders planned for July. This visit marks the golden anniversary of China-EU diplomatic ties and is expected to highlight the long-term strategic partnership between the two sides. France and Germany hold the largest shares in Airbus, making the deal especially significant for both countries.
