India Abstains UN Vote on Afghanistan, Slams ‘Business as Usual' Approach to Terrorism, Taliban

Time of India08-07-2025
India abstained from a United Nations General Assembly resolution on the situation in Afghanistan, warning that a 'business as usual' approach will not work in the current humanitarian and security crisis. India's Permanent Representative to the UN, Parvathaneni Harish, urged the global community to focus on dismantling terrorist safe havens, naming Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed. While reaffirming its historic ties and development commitments to Afghanistan, including more than 500 projects and 50,000 metric tons of wheat aid since 2021, India emphasized that punitive-only measures won't succeed. The move comes after External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's talks with the Taliban-appointed Foreign Minister, showing India's quiet but active diplomacy.#india #afghanistan #unitednations #unga #indiaafghanistan #indiaafghnaistanrelations #afghanistancrisis #indiaunvote #modigovt #talibanterror #unga2025 #indiadevelopmentaid #afghanistanun #terrorism #indiadiplomacy #parvathaneniharish #toi #toibharat #bharat #trending #breakingnews #indianews

Meghalaya govt orders probe into misappropriation of 4,000 MT coal

Shillong, Aug 2 (PTI) The Meghalaya government has ordered an investigation into the alleged misappropriation of over 4,000 metric tonnes (MT) of coal in the state, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said on Saturday. Tynsong, who also holds the Home portfolio, said that instructions have been issued to the district authorities and the police to conduct a thorough inquiry into the matter. 'We have asked deputy commissioners and superintendents of police to investigate if there has been any misappropriation or illegal diversion of coal," the deputy chief minister told PTI. The directive comes close on the heels of a revelation by a High Court-appointed committee that over 4,000 metric tonnes of coal, already declared as extracted and inventoried, have vanished from two designated storage sites. The committee, in its latest report to the Meghalaya High Court, said the disappearance raises serious questions about the state's mechanism for monitoring coal stock and preventing illegal transportation. Tynsong said the government will take action if any wrongdoing is established. 'If there is anything wrong, we will proceed according to the law. Even if it requires us to approach the Supreme Court, we will do so," he added. The state's probe will focus on tracing both diesel and coal inventories, including movement, documentation, and field verification. A comprehensive report will be prepared and shared with the court in due course, an official said. PTI JOP BDC view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Operation Akhal: Indian Forces Gun Down Terrorist In Kulgam Amid Rising Infiltration Attempts

In yet a strong message to cross-border terror networks, Indian security forces neutralized a terrorist during a fierce overnight gunfight in Jammu & Kashmir's Kulgam district. This encounter, codenamed Operation Akhal, is part of a string of successful counter-infiltration ops. It comes just days after Operation Shivshakti and Operation Mahadev, where Indian troops eliminated five Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists linked to the deadly Pahalgam attack. The Indian Army, alert and relentless, continues its proactive strategy in pushing back against Pakistan-sponsored terrorism. With three major encounters in just one week, India's message is clear: Terror will not be tolerated, and every attack will be avenged. The hunt is still on, and the noose is tightening. Gaza Famine Crisis Worsens, UN warns 500 Aid Trucks Needed Daily Firstpost America

Gaza Famine Crisis Worsens, UN warns 500 Aid Trucks Needed Daily | Firstpost America | N18G Gaza is reeling under a catastrophic hunger crisis, with famine conditions accelerating and starvation deaths mounting. At least 88 children have died from malnutrition-related causes, including one girl who weighed less than 2kg at death, below her birth weight. Over 28,000 malnutrition cases were recorded in July alone. With 90% of the population displaced and 70% of infrastructure destroyed, aid remains grossly insufficient. Only 100 trucks enter daily, far short of the 500–600 needed. Yet Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu continues to deny famine, even as global calls—including from within Israel—grow for sanctions and action. The UN warns: this is no longer a warning, but a living nightmare. See More
