18-month road closure in Johor Baru for RTS Link construction
JOHOR BARU: A crucial section of Jalan Johor Baru–Endau has been fully closed to traffic from June 3 and will remain so for more than 18 months to facilitate construction of the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link.
The Public Works Department announced that the full closure, affecting Section 0.10 to Section 0.20 of the road, wouldl be in place until Dec 31 next year to allow round-the-clock construction works.
In a statement, MRT Corporation (MRT Corp) said the closure was necessary to carry out piling, pile cap works, and column erection as part of the RTS Link infrastructure, which will eventually connect Johor Baru to Singapore.
During the closure of Section 0.10, motorists travelling from Jalan Tun Abdul Razak (towards Danga Bay) will be diverted via Jalan Station and Jalan Wong Ah Fook towards Jalan Tebrau.
As an alternative, those travelling from Jalan Tun Abdul Razak 1 may use the route in front of Masjid Habib Hassan Al-Attas towards Danga City Mall, make a U-turn, and return to Jalan Tun Abdul Razak before turning left onto Jalan Lingkaran Dalam.
Motorists are advised to adhere to traffic signages and instructions from on-site traffic personnel to ensure safety and minimise disruptions.

PWD reviewing PCA report before carrying out East-West Highway repairs
KOTA BARU: The Public Works Department (PWD) is reviewing the final report of the Pavement Condition Assessment (PCA) to plan road repair works, including along critical routes such as the East-West Highway (JRTB), says Public Works director-general Datuk Roslan Ismail. He said the PCA was essential for identifying damaged pavement sections and determining the most suitable maintenance methods to ensure that available allocations were utilised optimally. "For the Gerik–Jeli stretch of the JRTB, the PCA has been conducted since March 13 using advanced technologies such as the Multi Laser Profiler and Falling Weight Deflectometer. "We began the assessment earlier this year, and it is now in its final stage. "Based on the PCA report, we will use the existing allocation of RM55 million for repair works. If that is insufficient, we will apply for additional funding," he told reporters after launching the annual general meeting of the Kelantan chapter of the Malaysian Malay Contractors Association here today. Roslan said that it was impossible to repair the entire route in a short period due to the high cost and potential disruption to other infrastructure projects. "In this regard, we agree with the suggestion made by the Perak menteri besar, which aligns with PWD's aspirations. "We have long had plans in place, but it must be understood that the country's funding system follows a 'whole of nation' approach, where allocations are distributed comprehensively and according to annual priorities. "God willing, with the support from the state government and emphasis from the works minister, we have submitted an application for phased improvements," he said. The 215km JRTB, which links Gerik in Perak to Jeli in Kelantan, has been identified as a strategic route frequently damaged due to weather conditions and heavy traffic flow. Roslan said any road repair works would be carried out prudently to avoid overlap or interference with other ongoing development projects. "We want every ringgit spent to have the best possible impact for the people," he said. – Bernama

East-West Highway upgrade on the table, says Perak MB
Promising development: Saarani (centre) attending a Perak Export Day programme at a hotel in Ipoh. — RONNIE CHIN/The Star IPOH: The East-West Highway that connects Perak's Gerik with Kelantan's Jeli is in need of massive upgrades to improve its condition and safety, says Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad. The Perak Mentri Besar said state infrastructure committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin has been tasked with preparing a working paper detailing things required to improve the road. 'It's high time we look into the highway's alignment and condition,' he said in a press conference after opening Perak Export Day here yesterday. 'The highway was built during (Malaysia's second prime minister) Tun Abdul Razak Hussein's time to stop incursions by communists. 'Mohammad Nizar and the Public Works Department will need to review and list down the things needed to be done, be it to widen the road, the construction materials needed, lines on the road or street lights,' he said, adding that some stretches of the road could no longer be patched up. Fifteen Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris students were killed after a bus crashed on the highway on Monday. Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said in a Facebook post on Tuesday that the site of the tragedy was already earmarked for rehabilitation this year with an allocation of RM55mil. Saarani said a new hospital is also needed in Gerik to provide treatment to victims due to the high frequency of accidents on the highway. 'Gerik needs a new hospital as well as experts, staff and facilities. A separate paper will be prepared by state health committee A. Sivanesan on this,' he said, adding that both papers will be forwarded to the federal government for consideration to be included in the next Malaysia Plan. 'I will also speak to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on June 15 about the proposals to improve the situation near the highway,' he added.
