Over 1,000 accident blackspots identified nationwide for safety upgrades
The Public Works Department (JKR) conducted a thorough review of federal roads with sharp bends, structural damage, and inadequate lighting.
'We have identified more than 1,000 accident blackspots nationwide,' said Nanta.
He noted that these locations face multiple issues, including poor nighttime visibility requiring proper lighting solutions.
Over 300 solar lights have already been installed along the East-West Highway (RTB) to improve safety.
Additional solar lights will be placed at identified accident-prone areas and sharp bends soon.
Nanta shared these updates after launching the Sri Tanjong 1 ferry at the JKR Pengkalan Kubor Ferry terminal.
The event was attended by Narathiwat Deputy Governor Amirut Bua-On and Kelantan JKR director Nik Soh Yaacoub.
The ministry has requested extra funding to speed up solar light installations for enhanced road safety.
Regarding the new ferry, Nanta emphasised its role beyond transportation, calling it a vital link between Malaysia and Thailand.
'It facilitates movement, strengthens trade, and nurtures cultural ties and kinship,' he said.
The previous Sri Tanjong ferry served reliably for 34 years before being replaced.
The new Sri Tanjong 1 ferry, costing RM7.90 million, can carry 58 passengers, six crew members, and eight light vehicles or a 44-seater bus.
Nanta highlighted the ferry's upgraded capacity for both passengers and heavy vehicles.
'It will support safer cross-border mobility and boost local economic growth,' he added.
He also proposed preserving the old ferry as a historical monument for future generations. - Bernama

80 per cent road accidents caused by careless drivers, not poor road conditions
Road users must realise their actions don't just endanger themselves, but everyone else on the road. Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi with Sinar Daily Editor Tasnim Lokman during Sinar Daily's podcast entitled 'Billions Spent but Are Our Roads Any Safer?'. - Photo: FACEBOOK / ALEXANDER NANTHA LINGGI SHAH ALAM – Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi has urged Malaysians to take greater responsibility behind the wheel, revealing that over 80 per cent of road accidents in the country are caused by driver negligence rather than poor road conditions or weather. Citing data from the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros), Nanta said Malaysia recorded about 500,000 road accidents each year, with around 12,000 cases involving serious injuries or fatalities. Of the roughly 6,000 annual road deaths, around 4,000 involved motorcyclists, he added. 'These figures are high and people often ask if it's because of the road conditions. The fact is, Miros studies show slightly more than 80 per cent of accidents are due to the carelessness of drivers themselves. "Only 13 per cent are linked to road conditions or weather, such as slippery roads from heavy rain," he said during Sinar Daily's podcast entitled 'Billions Spent but Are Our Roads Any Safer?'. He stressed that many accidents could have been avoided if road users adhered to traffic laws, especially speed limits that were set scientifically to suit road conditions. 'If the maximum speed limit is 60 km/h, it's there for a reason. Exceeding it might still be safe to a point, but your control over the vehicle decreases, especially on roads with turns or downhill stretches,' he explained. Nanta also warned against the growing trend of drivers using mobile phones while driving, calling it extremely irresponsible. "You might think replying to a WhatsApp message is harmless, but if you hit someone and they die, you'll carry that guilt for life. "Our road users must realise their actions don't just endanger themselves, but everyone else on the road," he said. More Like This

2026 Budget: East-West Highway upgrades a priority for Works Ministry
KUALA KANGSAR: The East-West Highway (JRTB), particularly the Gerik-Jeli stretch, is among the key priorities for the Works Ministry under the upcoming 2026 Budget, said Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi. He said the ministry has submitted a request for funding to upgrade several sections of the route, citing urgent safety needs. However, the exact allocation will depend on the government's final decision. "It's not a special allocation, we've included it under regular funding requests for the JRTB," he told reporters after the official opening of the Sultan Muzzaffar Shah Bridge at Dataran Manong today. Earlier, the Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah officially inaugurated the bridge. Also present were Raja Permaisuri of Perak Tuanku Zara Salim, Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, his wife Datin Seri Aezer Zubin, as well as Public Works director-general Datuk Roslan Ismail. As part of ongoing safety measures along the JRTB, Nanta said 385 solar-powered streetlights have been installed in high-risk areas and dangerous bends, commonly known as 'black spots'. "These are not for the entire highway, only for critical sections identified through our assessments," he said, adding that damaged guardrails, signboards and road markings are also being repaired or replaced. Nanta also announced the launch of the MYJalan mobile app, which aims to enable the public to report road damage and submit feedback directly to the ministry. "Perak has been chosen as the first state to launch the MYJalan initiative, reflecting our commitment to public feedback and road safety," he said. He said the JRTB's condition had been a concern since the start of his tenure and described the highway as not only a vital interstate link but also a key part of the country's road development history. Data collected via the app, he noted, has already supported federal funding requests, leading to repair and upgrade works along the JRTB and other federal roads in Perak. – Bernama
