Letters to the Editor: Neither wildfires nor ICE can take Los Angeles' joy for good
To the editor: I can only imagine the ongoing pain of those who lost a home in Los Angeles' fires or contact with a loved one to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids. As deputy managing editor Shelby Grad writes, there can be no escape from that grief ('The aftershocks of L.A.'s summer of ICE keep coming, even as some of us move on,' Aug. 2). But I want to share that a scenario of resilience, unity and, above all, pure, unbridled joy spread across the outdoor plaza at downtown L.A.'s Music Center on Aug. 1 for the organization's free disco night. As City Hall towered across the street and a sparkling mirror ball spun, a couple thousand of us — all ages, shapes, sizes and ethnicities — pumped and gyrated to '70s favorites including 'YMCA,' a song embraced by the LGTBQ+ community that President Trump so oddly seems to like, and Gloria Gaynor's victorious 'I Will Survive.' No one has been able to deport all the joy from our beloved city. No person or thing ever will. Zan Dubin, Santa Monica .. To the editor: It hasn't been an easy year for Los Angeles. Yet sitting at the Hollywood Bowl on Sunday, the temperature perfect, no biting insects to bother me, the Hollywood sign peeking through, surrounded by people of every race and walk of life gathered to watch a performance of a musical about the most radically loving figure, led by an otherworldly talented, multiracial, largely queer cast, reminded me why we so often say 'only in L.A.' and why my hometown is the greatest city on Earth ('Why 'Jesus Christ Superstar' at the Hollywood Bowl is 'the musical theater version of the Avengers,'' July 29). What Time Does ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty' Season 3, Episode 5 Come Out?
As we approach Episode 5 of The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3, we've already seen cheating, a breakup, an engagement and plenty of drama between Belly, Jeremiah, and their families ahead of their wedding. But Episode 5 might break fans entirely, as it's rumored to be Conrad's POV episode — where he takes over the narration from Belly and reveals all his inner thoughts. He's now alone in Cousins with Belly, after she ran away from home and Jeremiah went back to his internship. It also appears that he canceled his flight back to California to stay with her after walking in on her crying. A clue that Episode 5 could be narrated by Conrad appeared at the end of Episode 4. After baking Belly "dirt bombs" for her birthday and giving her a hug, we hear his narration. "What have I done?" he says. "It's cool to steal the voiceover spot for a little while," Christopher Briney told Entertainment Weekly about his upcoming POV episode. 'It's fun to have the insight. It's fun to have exactly what the subtext is. It makes the scene easier, because that's half the work.' Keep reading to find out what time Episode 5 drops, how to watch and what happened in last week's emotional episode of The Summer I Turned Pretty. What Time Does The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3, Episode 5 Come Out? The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3, Episode 5, premieres on Wednesday, August 6 at 3 a.m. ET / 12 p.m. PT on Prime Video. In Season 3, Episode 4 of The Summer I Turned Pretty, it's Belly's birthday, and she's still trying to make the most of the celebration while her parents disapprove of her wedding plans. Jeremiah is not enthusiastic about his summer internship with his dad's company, and the last thing his dad wants to talk about is the wedding. When Belly asks Laurel to go dress shopping with her, she says she can't. She is still firm in her belief that Belly and Jeremiah are too young. Instead, Belly goes dress shopping with Taylor and her mother, Lucinda. Belly finds her dream dress, but the moment is soured by the fact that her mom isn't there. But one of the most intense moments of the episode was an exchange between Laurel, Belly, and Jeremiah at Belly's home. In trying to win over Laurel's approval, Jeremiah says that he wants to be with Belly for the rest of his life and believes his mom would have wanted them all to be a family. However, Laurel responds by saying they'll never truly know what his mother would have wanted. Belly storms out of the house after the fight and runs away to Cousins with Jeremiah. After falling asleep on the couch, she wakes up to see Conrad standing there. Conrad hasn't told them that he got fired from his summer clinic yet, but assures them that he's on his way out. Meanwhile, Belly is planning on staying at the house for the time being, while Jeremiah has to go back to his internship. Jeremiah finally pulls Conrad aside to ask him to be his best man, but his brother didn't give him the answer he was looking for. Conrad tells Jeremiah that when you really think about it, their engagement is "kind of ridiculous.' Jeremiah leaves, and Belly is left to go through her things in her bedroom at Cousins, reminiscing on special moments with Susannah and her mom, like getting her big girl bed and wearing the white debutante dress. The emotions become too much for her, and Belly breaks down and cries into her pillow. Conrad, who is ready to leave to head back to California, overhears her sobs. He appears to change his mind and decides to stay in Cousins — and he also lets Jeremiah know that he'll actually be his best man after all. Belly finds Conrad to thank him for being a good sport. 'For what it's worth, I think it's good. The two of you,' he says to her. 'You obviously make each other really happy.' He also wishes her a happy belated birthday and bakes some 'dirt bombs." When she goes to hug him, for the first time, viewers get to hear what he's thinking. 'What have I done?' his thoughts say. Move over Jeremiah, we're so ready for Conrad's POV! The Summer I Turned Pretty is streaming on Prime Video. Watch the official trailer below.

Fireworks Accident Sets Barge on Fire: Video
A fireworks display ended in disaster on Monday night after a barge erupted in flames off the coast of Yokohama, Japan. Newsweek has contacted the Japanese coast guard's Fifth Regional Headquarters for comment by email. The incident took place toward the end of the annual Minato Mirai Smart Festival, an event designed to promote local businesses and boost Yokohama's international profile. According to the festival's website, the event featured the launch of about 20,000 fireworks in 25 minutes. Authorities received an emergency call around 7:55 p.m. reporting smoke rising from the waterfront, Jiji Press reported. One of the barges serving as a launch platform for the fireworks had caught fire. All five workers on board jumped into the sea and were rescued by the coast guard, with one being transported to the hospital with minor injuries. No other injuries were reported. The fire also spread to a nearby vessel, though there were no crew members on board at the time. Event organizers said the blaze was caused when the machine launching fireworks malfunctioned. Footage circulating online shows bright streams of sparks and large plumes of smoke streaming from the ship as a fire spreads across the deck of the stricken barge. The incident recalls a similar blaze that broke out on a barge set to carry fireworks to Marblehead, Massachusetts, early on July 4, 2024. The accidental fire led to the cancellation of the city's Independence Day celebration later that day. The Minato Mira Smart Festival organizers wrote on Facebook: "As the organizing committee for the fireworks display, we will first thoroughly investigate the cause. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused to everyone who looks forward to this fireworks display every year." One Japanese netizen wrote on X on Tuesday: "Even now, past 12:30 a.m., the fireworks that have become uncontrollable continue to explode." Another X user wrote: "An unexpected turn of events... The fire is stealing the spotlight from the fireworks. I hope everything's okay." A third user wrote on the platform: "Fireworks shouldn't be set off in the middle of a city like this anymore. It's a small mercy that no one was injured. If things had gone wrong, there's a chance all of Yokohama could have been engulfed in flames, which is terrifying." The police for the Kanagawa prefecture are continuing their investigation into the incident, according to Jiji Press.
