Veteran pilot Sandhu joins Air India plane crash probe as domain expert
Captain Sandhu, who was also a designated examiner for the Boeing 787-8 fleet at Air India, had taken delivery of the now-crashed 787-8 plane — VT-ANB — in 2013.
On June 12, Air India's Boeing 787-8 aircraft en route to London Gatwick from Ahmedabad crashed into a building soon after takeoff, killing 260 people, including 19 people on the ground. Out of the 242 people onboard, one passenger survived.
On July 12, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) released its preliminary report into the fatal crash.
"AAIB has onboarded seasoned aviator R.S. Sandhu in the ongoing investigation of the Air India Boeing 787-8 plane crash in Ahmedabad last month," one of the sources told PTI.
AAIB had apparently approached Captain Sandhu to be a domain expert in the ongoing probe, and he agreed to the proposal, the sources said.
Captain Sandhu, who was with Air India for close to 39 years in various capacities, is the founder of aviation consultancy firm Aviazione. He had also headed a team that worked on the integration of the Tata Group airlines.
Various pilot unions had raised concerns over the absence of subject matter experts in the probe. Airline Pilots' Association of India (ALPA India) has been urging AAIB to include its representatives in the Air India aircraft crash probe.
Details about other domain experts, who are part of the AAIB investigation, could not be immediately ascertained.
A five-member team, headed by 56-year-old Sanjay Kumar Singh, is probing the fatal crash of the Air India aircraft.
Experienced pilots, engineers, aviation medicine specialists, aviation psychologists and flight recorder specialists have been taken on board as subject matter experts to assist in the investigation in the area of their domain expertise, according to AAIB.

Air India Group completes fuel control switch checks on Boeing planes
Air India and its low-cost subsidiary, Air India Express, have completed precautionary inspections of the locking mechanism of fuel control switches on all Boeing 787 and 737 aircraft in their fleets, complying with a directive issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on July 14. The DGCA's directive followed the preliminary report issued on July 12 by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) into the June 12 crash of Air India flight AI171, which killed 260 people. The report found that both engine fuel control switches on the Boeing 787 had transitioned from "Run" to "Cutoff" just seconds after takeoff from Ahmedabad, resulting in a dual engine failure. The cockpit voice recorder captured one pilot asking the other why the fuel was cut off, to which the other replied that he had not done it. A Mayday call was made shortly before the aircraft crashed into a building near the airport. In a statement issued on Tuesday, Air India said, 'Air India has completed precautionary inspections on the locking mechanism of the Fuel Control Switch (FCS) on all Boeing 787 and Boeing 737 aircraft in its fleet.' 'No issues were found with the said locking mechanism,' the airline said, adding that it had started voluntary inspections on July 12 and completed them within the prescribed time limit set by the DGCA. The airline has formally communicated this to the regulator. Although the exact cause of the switch movement on AI171 remains undetermined, the incident led the DGCA to issue a mandatory inspection order on July 14. The DGCA's order referenced a 2018 Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin (SAIB) from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). That FAA bulletin had warned of the possibility that Honeywell-manufactured fuel control switches on certain Boeing aircraft — including the 737 and 787 — might be installed in a way that disables their locking mechanism, which is meant to prevent accidental switch movement from "Run" to "Cutoff." However, the FAA did not issue any fresh directive after the AI171 crash, and the 2018 SAIB remains advisory. The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has also stated that there is no need for any action by Boeing. Meanwhile, some foreign carriers, such as Singapore Airlines and Etihad Airways, conducted precautionary checks of their own accord. The DGCA's July 14 order required Indian operators of affected Boeing aircraft to complete inspections by July 21 and report back. Boeing 777s are exempt from the order as they do not use the switches under scrutiny. The DGCA order applied to Boeing fleets across five Indian carriers: Air India, Air India Express, IndiGo, SpiceJet, and Akasa Air.

Many Indian airlines spend more on publicity than on passenger safety: Survey
MUMBAI: A majority of Indian air travellers believe that domestic airlines are focusing more on publicity than passenger safety, according to a nationwide online survey conducted by LocalCircles. The survey, which garnered over 44,000 responses from citizens across 322 districts, found that 76 per cent of respondents felt that many airlines were spending more on marketing campaigns than ensuring flight safety. Of the 26,696 people who responded to the question on publicity versus safety, 43 per cent said 'yes, all of them' while 33 per cent said 'yes, some of them.' Only 11 per cent believed no airline was prioritising publicity over safety, while 13 per cent gave no definitive answer. The findings come in the wake of a string of recent aviation incidents involving several Indian carriers, including Air India and SpiceJet. Last month, a Tata Group-operated Air India Boeing 787-8 aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad en route to London Gatwick, killing 241 of the 242 passengers and 19 people on the ground. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is currently probing the cause of the tragedy and has submitted a preliminary report.
