Arrest of two directors with ‘hybrid ganja': excise serves notice on director Sameer Thahir
The excise officials have served a notice directing cinematographer-turned-director Sameer Thahir to appear before the agency in connection with the incident in which Malayalam movie directors Khalid Rahman and Ashraf Hamsa were nabbed with 1.5 g of suspected hybrid ganja during a pre-dawn raid on Sunday.
They were arrested from an apartment near Marine Drive that belonged to Mr. Thahir. Reportedly, he has been asked to appear within a week. Another person, Shalif Muhammad, was also arrested along with the directors.
Among other things, the excise may ask Mr. Thahir whether he was aware of and had given consent to the use of ganja in his apartment, an offence which may attract the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act Section 25A (punishment for using property for illegal drug activities). The apartment is purportedly being used for film-related discussions and work.
According to excise officials, the director duo was about to use ganja when they were nabbed from the apartment. Shalif had reportedly bought the contraband from a supplier in Kerala. While the excise has details about the supplier, including his mobile phone number, he could not be tracked yet. More details about the source of the drug could be known only after apprehending him, said excise sources.
The accused may be further summoned if the investigation officer gets any fresh leads warranting it. Mr. Rahman is the director of movies Alappuzha Gymkhana, Thallumala and Unda, while Mr. Hamsa directed Thamaasha and Bheemante Vazhi.
Since the quantity in their possession was small, the accused were released on bail. They reportedly claimed that they converged at the apartment to discuss a movie. According to excise sources, the duo had escaped by a whisker in a similar raid at the apartment in March. Since then, the FEFKA Directors' Union has decided to suspend the two directors. The raid was carried out on specific intelligence input, complete with the apartment details.

Coimbatore/Thrissur: Malayalam film actor Shine Tom Chacko 's father C P Chacko, 70, died on the spot when a multipurpose vehicle (MPV) the family members were travelling in rammed a truck at Paraiyur near Palacode in Dharmapuri, Tamil Nadu, around 7am on Friday. Shine, 41, sustained a fracture on his left hand. Shine's brother Joe John Chacko, 31, his mother Maria Carmel, 65, and assistant Anis, 42, who was driving the car, also suffered injuries. The front portion of the MPV was mangled. They were travelling to Bengaluru from Shine's home in Thrissur. Police said the MPV was speeding. Palacode police rushed to the spot, rescued the injured and admitted them to Dharmapuri Govt Medical College Hospital. After autopsy, Chacko's body was handed over to the family members, who took it to Thrissur. The Palacode police registered a case and investigation is on. Anis said the car was moving at a safe speed. "A truck switched lanes abruptly without any warning, came in front of the car which rammed it. Had the truck switched lanes when it was at least 100 metres ahead of us, I could have stopped the car or changed lanes,'' Anis told TOI over the phone. "Joe and I were in the front seats and we suffered limited impact from the collision as the airbags opened. Shine's parents were sitting in the middle seat and airbags there did not open. Shine was lying down in the backseat,'' Anis said. Chacko's relative Davis E A said the family was going for a neurology-related treatment for Shine in Bengaluru. Shine recently underwent de-addiction treatment at Thodupuzha in Ernakulam. Chacko's body was brought to Thrissur around 10.30pm while Shine and Carmel were admitted to Sun Hospital in the city. Family sources said the body will be kept at Jubilee Mission Medical College Hospital mortuary. His funeral will be performed at Mundur church on Sunday or Monday. "Chacko's two daughters are in New Zealand. They must reach here. Also, the doctors should give consent for Shine and his mother to attend the funeral. Only then can we fix a time,'' said Davis. Producer Sandra Thomas alleges death threat
Producer Sandra Thomas has accused a production controller in the Malayalam film industry of issuing a death threat to her. She told the media on Friday that production controller Reni Joseph had allegedly called her over phone on March 20, 2025 and threatened her in response to her statements related to the changing roles of production controllers in film industry. She said she had to block his number after he repeated the threats. Though she had filed a complaint before the police, no action had been taken so far, she alleged. 'Probe progressing' The Palarivattom police, which had registered a first information report based on her complaint, said on Friday that the investigation was progressing. The Production Executives' Union affiliated to the Film Employees Federation of Kerala issued a communication on Friday stating that they had suspended Mr. Joseph from the primary membership of the union after coming across media reports on the death threats he had allegedly issued to Ms. Thomas. The union had also suspended Mukesh Thripunitura, another production controller, for issuing similar threats against her. Ms. Thomas accused the federation leadership of protecting those who had threatened her. She said action was taken against them only after she revealed the incident to the media. Union's response The communication issued by the production executives' union said that Mr. Joseph was earlier warned against making such remarks. Ms. Thomas had said in an interview that the role of production controllers warranted a change as they were now acting as managers of artistes.
