Chilipad Review: So Cooling, I Turned Down The AC In Triple-Digit Heat
I tested the Chilipad Dock Pro for over two months in the summer heat to see how effective it is. Illustration: Forbes / Photo: Retailer
I live in the South, where we've hit triple digits these past few weeks. Add in a healthy dose of humidity and you have the perfect testing environment for a cooling product. Chilipad offers multiple cooling systems; my husband and I tested the Chilipad Dock Pro Bed, which lets you independently customize temperature and scheduling for each side of the bed. Ahead, learn more about how it works, its standout features and its potential drawbacks.

Forbes Vetted ratings are based on thorough evaluations by our editorial team to help you choose the best products with confidence.
Cooling type: Active | Cooling method: Water | Trial: 30 nights | Warranty: 1 year
What you'll love: Available in half or whole sizes for one or more sleepers
Each partner can control their side of the bed
Temperature control ranges from 55 to 115 degrees Fahrenheit
No membership fees
Keep in mind: It requires distilled water and cleaner for maintenance (not included)
Only queen, king and California king sizes are available
You can choose a 'me' or 'we' model of the Chilipad Dock Pro, meaning a half size created for just one person that goes on one side of the mattress or a whole size for two people who share a bed. Both options are available for queen, king and California king mattresses. My husband and I ordered the 'we' to see how customizable it truly is for couples.
When it arrives, you may feel like there's a lot going on with the different docks, hoses and wires, but it comes together rather simply. You secure the pad on your mattress like you would a protector and weave the hoses through your bed frame. The hoses connect to the dock(s), which then plugs into the wall. You can power the device on and control the temperature using the buttons on the dock, but it's best (and easiest) to download the Sleepme app and control it from your phone.
The "we" Chilipad Dock Pro fits like a mattress protector, but with hoses at the bottom. bridget chapman for forbes
Along with adjusting the temperature from 55 to 115 degrees Fahrenheit, you can set up a regular schedule for it to automatically turn on and adjust throughout the night or morning if you prefer. Something I also especially appreciate about the Chilipad: It does not require an ongoing paid membership or fees like some other cooling products do.
If you're like me and enjoy a clutter-free zone, I'd measure the space beneath your bed frame to make sure it can slide under. At 6.25 inches tall, the docks just barely slide under ours. (It would bother me if I had to keep them out in plain sight, but that may be a personal preference—I don't fully love being able to see them under the bed either, to be honest.)

The cooling system works by circulating distilled water through microtubes in the pad, and the water's temperature changes to keep you comfortable. You do need to buy the distilled water separately; I found it requires a refill every few weeks, so it's best to keep a jug nearby. With my husband and I using two docks every night, we probably replace the jug itself on a monthly basis. Rapid And Effective Cooling (Or Heating) Relief
One lesson I've learned after moving many times over the years is no two thermostats seem to share the same temperature truth. What I mean by that is 66 degrees for one may feel like 70 degrees for another, and hot sleepers know how much each one of those degrees count in the middle of a sweltering night. Because of this, I first set my Chilipad to 64 degrees—and I froze. I found my sweet spot to be 68 to 70 degrees for most of the night with an automatic adjustment to 73 degrees come morning. Meanwhile, my husband likes his even cooler, at 65 degrees, so it takes some playing around with.
Whatever your preferred temperature, this system was so effective at cooling my body that I ended up turning down our AC a few times in the middle of the night. I also tested its heating function, cranking it up to the full 115 degrees. The result was a soothing warmth, as if lying on a full-body heating pad or heated massage table. I think it could especially be relaxing and helpful for easing aches, pains or cramps.
The second the system kicks on, it starts working, but it takes a few minutes to significantly change degrees. You can slightly feel the water when it initially fills the microtubes within the pad beneath you, and a cooling sensation forms as it drops in temperature, but it's very subtle in terms of the operational feel. I didn't notice the pad itself being there throughout the night and don't think it altered the feel or firmness of our mattress at all.

I compare the sound the dock makes to a very gentle white noise. The brand refers to it as 'whisper-quiet,' a description I agree with. We also sleep with a white noise machine so it didn't impact us at all. Nevertheless, I think most people would be fine with it or would hardly notice it since I had to double-check whether it was still on or not some mornings—but if you need your room to be dead quiet while you sleep, it might be a dealbreaker depending on where you place the dock. Easy To Maintain With Water And Cleaner
As mentioned above, you need distilled water to keep it running, but Sleepme suggests you also use the Chilipad cleaner on a monthly basis. Using the cleaner is really easy: You just pour it into the same area where the distilled water goes and you're done. However, you need to purchase the cleaner separately; you can buy it as a 3-, 6- or 12-pack (ranging from $24 to $96 before discounts). The brand also recommends doing a semiannual flush where you disconnect the pad, drain it, then wash it in a cold water on gentle cycle and dry with a medium-temperature setting.
You add both the water and cleaner to this corner of the dock (after unlocking and removing the ... More lid). bridget chapman for forbes
I always recommend using a mattress protector to keep your mattress safe from spills, dust mites and allergens, but I would especially recommend a waterproof one for extra security if using the Chilipad. (We haven't experienced any issues with leaking or condensation, but again, it never hurts to have one.) Optional AI-Powered Sleep Tracking
You can also add a sleep tracker to the Chilipad Dock Pro, which is in the form of another thin but smaller pad that goes under the Chilipad cover where your chest lies. It uses AI to offer live temperature adjustments as well as daily analyses of your REM, deep sleep and light sleep stages.
The non-wearable device also tracks your sleeping heart rate variability, resting heart rate, breathing patterns and more in an effort to help improve your sleep quality and knowledge. All the information is stored in the same app you use to operate the Chilipad. It does cost an additional $299 at full retail, though. We haven't tested this component yet and cannot speak to its precision (though no sleep tracker is 100% accurate). Final Thoughts
The Chilipad Dock Pro Bed Cooling System has immensely transformed our sleep. Not only do we sleep deeper and better—and have nixed the 3 a.m. blanket-kicking routine—but my husband no longer feels like a human furnace sleeping next to me, and vice versa. It's easy to use, and I love that you can set daily, personalized schedules for each side of the bed.
Though I do think there are a lot of mattresses and bedding products that are more 'cooling' than others, there's only so much they can do, since they don't use electronic tech to cool you down. Rather, their materials help regulate your temperature by being breathable, cool to the touch or a heat conductor. They definitely help in my experience and are adequate for many sleepers, but their capabilities are not extreme. The Chilipad, on the other hand, is an active bed system that can truly chill or toast you to your heart's content.
There are also smart beds that contain this type of technology, like the Sleep Number ClimateCool, but these options are best if you're looking to commit to a more drastic (and expensive) sleep setup change. I appreciate that adding the Chilipad to your current mattress won't alter its feel or firmness.
However, I know the Chilipad Dock Pro is a luxury purchase alone. It also may not be the right product for those looking to avoid having any dock(s) and hoses to store under or around their bed—or if you don't want the regular maintenance of adding distilled water and cleaner. In that case, a cooling blanket or cooling mattress topper may suffice. But for my hot-sleeping husband and me, the Chilipad is beyond worth it. Why Trust Forbes Vetted

Is The Chilipad Worth It?
We think the Chilipad is worth it if temperature is negatively impacting your sleep. It's an effective cooling (and heating) system that can adjust your bed's temperature from 55 to 115 degrees Fahrenheit. It's also easy to use and maintain.
What Is The Difference Between Chilipad And Ooler?
The Ooler was a cooling system from Sleepme that was discontinued in December 2023 and replaced with the Chilipad Dock Pro. The brand says the Dock Pro offers twice the cooling capacity that the Ooler did, while being quieter and more comfortable.
Does Chilipad Require A Subscription?
No, Sleepme does not require a subscription or ongoing fee for its Chilipad bed cooling systems.

15 Ways To Heal And Rebuild After An Abusive Marriage
The echoes of an abusive marriage can cling like shadows, haunting the spaces where light should shine. You're not alone in this maze of healing, and rebuilding yourself is both a tender art and a fierce reclaiming of power. Every step is an act of creation—not just of a new life, but of a new you. Here are 15 surprising ways to gather the pieces and forge a path forward. 1. Engage In Radical Physical And Emotional Rest In a world that glorifies hustle, the concept of rest can feel like rebellion. After enduring an abusive marriage, your body and soul are in dire need of repair. "Radical rest" is about giving yourself permission to do nothing and be unapologetically still. Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith, author of "Sacred Rest," explains that true restoration isn't just physical—it's mental, emotional, and spiritual too. Imagine shedding the guilt that comes with inactivity and instead basking in the healing power of rest. This isn't a luxury; it's a necessity, a radical act of self-love. Set aside time to unplug from the chaos, to simply breathe and be. Your calendar might not like it, but your heart will thank you. 2. Unfollow And Unfriend Toxic Third Parties You've been through enough—it's time to declutter your digital life. Those social media feeds filled with toxic reminders of the past need an overhaul. Start by unfollowing and unfriending anyone who doesn't add genuine value to your life. Curate a digital environment that uplifts and inspires instead of draining your energy. This isn't about escapism; it's about creating a space where you can breathe without the weight of judgment or comparison. Surround yourself with accounts and communities that celebrate authenticity and resilience. Over time, you'll find your online world reflects the inner peace you're striving to achieve. Your digital self deserves as much freedom as your real-world one. 3. Create Your Own Sanctuary Space Your home should be a place of solace, not another battlefield. Transform a corner or room into a sanctuary that soothes your senses and spirit. According to feng shui expert Anjie Cho, a well-designed space can influence your mood and energy. Choose colors, textures, and objects that resonate with your newfound self. This isn't about spending money on new things; it's about reclaiming your environment. Repurpose items you love, or introduce elements like plants or soft lighting to cultivate calm. This sanctuary becomes a physical manifestation of your healing journey. As you nurture this space, you'll find it nurtures you in return. 4. Write Your Own Narrative You've been living in a story written by someone else—now it's time to seize the pen. Writing your own narrative means consciously deciding who you are and who you want to become. Start a journal, blog, or collection of notes that give voice to your experiences and dreams. This act of writing is a bold declaration of agency over your life. Your story doesn't need to be shared with the world unless you want it to be. This is for you, an evolving document of self-discovery and empowerment. As you write, you'll uncover truths and desires that have been stifled. Your narrative is both a map and a journey, guiding you toward the life you deserve. 5. Explore Somatic Therapy Healing isn't just a mental exercise; it's a full-body experience. Somatic therapy focuses on the physical sensations associated with trauma, offering a path to release pent-up emotions. According to research published in the journal Psychological Trauma, somatic practices can significantly reduce symptoms of PTSD. Through techniques like breathwork and movement, you can reconnect with your body. Consider working with a somatic therapist to navigate this journey. They'll help you identify and release the tension stored in your body. This isn't about reliving trauma; it's about finding peace within your own skin. You'll emerge with a deeper understanding of the language your body speaks. 6. Relearn The Art Of Child Play Somewhere along the way, life became too serious, too fraught with fear. Rediscovering play is about embracing joy for the sake of joy. Engage in activities that make you laugh, that make you lose track of time. Whether it's painting, hiking, or dancing around your kitchen, let playfulness re-enter your world. This isn't about denying the pain but acknowledging that joy can coexist with healing. Play is a powerful antidote to the heaviness of trauma. It's a reminder that life is more than survival—it's meant to be experienced with wonder. Give yourself permission to find delight in the everyday. 7. Boost Your Self-Compassion With Mindful Meditation Silence the inner critic that echoes with your abuser's voice by embracing self-compassion through meditation. Kristin Neff, a leading researcher in self-compassion, emphasizes that being kind to ourselves in difficult times is essential for healing. Mindful meditation allows you to observe your thoughts without judgment, offering a safe space to practice self-kindness. Start with just a few minutes each day, focusing on your breath and the gentle acceptance of yourself. As you cultivate this practice, you'll find that self-compassion becomes more than a momentary exercise. It's a transformative way of being that fosters resilience and self-worth. With time, you'll treat yourself with the tenderness you've always deserved. 8. Create New Power Rituals Rituals can anchor you amidst the chaos, providing a sense of stability and meaning. These aren't grand gestures but small, intentional acts that honor your journey. Light a candle each evening to symbolize the light you're bringing into your life. Or start each day with a mantra that reinforces your strength and purpose. In creating rituals, you're reclaiming control over your story and setting intentions for your future. These practices become sacred reminders of your resilience. They're about celebrating progress, no matter how small, and grounding yourself in the present. Through ritual, you cultivate a sense of belonging within yourself. 9. Engage In Active Reflection After an abusive marriage, reflection isn't just a passive glance backward; it's an active, empowering process. Engage with your past not to dwell, but to understand and reshape your future. Consider therapy or counseling as a guided space for this exploration. The goal is to discern patterns, understand triggers, and navigate the complex web of your emotions. Active reflection helps in transforming experiences into wisdom. It's about turning what was once a source of pain into a wellspring of strength. With every insight, you gain clarity and direction. This journey inward is about healing and stepping into your agency. 10. Cultivate Connection Through Volunteering Isolation can be an unwelcome companion after leaving an abusive relationship. Volunteering offers a bridge back to community and connection. Choose causes that resonate with you, whether it's helping animals, supporting other survivors, or environmental activism. Here, you'll find purpose beyond your personal struggles. Volunteering shifts the focus from what you've endured to what you can offer. It's an opportunity to rebuild social ties and rediscover your sense of belonging. Through acts of service, you cultivate empathy and compassion—both for others and yourself. Your contributions become a testament to your strength and resilience. 11. Seek Empowerment Through Education Education isn't just about acquiring knowledge; it's a pathway to empowerment. Whether you're interested in formal studies or informal learning, expanding your horizons can redefine your identity. Take a class, dive into online tutorials, or join discussion groups that challenge and inspire you. Through learning, you gain tools and perspectives that enrich your life. Education becomes a reclamation of power, a declaration that you are more than your past. It's about igniting curiosity and exploring new passions. In nurturing this aspect of yourself, you build confidence and self-efficacy. Knowledge becomes both a shield and a sword in your journey forward. 12. Redefine Success On Your Own Terms The world is quick to impose its definitions of success, but your journey demands a personal lexicon. What does success look like for you, beyond societal expectations? Maybe it's about creating a life of peace, or nurturing meaningful relationships. Redefining success allows you to prioritize what truly matters to you. This isn't about minimizing aspirations but aligning them with your values and desires. Craft a vision for your future that feels genuinely fulfilling. As you pursue this vision, you'll find satisfaction in progress rather than perfection. Success becomes a deeply personal celebration of growth and authenticity. 13. Reconnect With Nature As A Healing Ally Nature offers a sanctuary where you can ground yourself and find solace. Spend time outdoors, feeling the wind on your skin and the earth beneath your feet. This connection to the natural world can be profoundly healing, reducing anxiety and fostering a sense of peace. The simplicity and beauty of nature remind you of the world's vastness and your place within it. Engage in activities like hiking, gardening, or simply sitting by a body of water. Allow the rhythms of nature to influence your own, promoting balance and reflection. The natural world becomes both a refuge and a teacher, offering lessons in resilience and renewal. Here, you find the quiet strength to keep moving forward. 14. Celebrate Your Steps To Recovery In the aftermath of an abusive marriage, every step forward is a victory. Celebrate milestones along your journey, no matter their size. Whether it's a day without anxiety or a moment of courage, acknowledge and honor these achievements. They're markers of your resilience and progress. Create rituals or keepsakes that commemorate these moments. This practice reinforces your growth and motivates you to continue. By celebrating your milestones, you redefine success and cultivate a mindset of gratitude. Each celebration builds upon the next, weaving a tapestry of triumph over adversity. 15. Build A New Circle Of Allies The people around you can profoundly influence your journey of healing. Seek out those who uplift, challenge, and support you without judgment. This new tribe doesn't need to be large, but it should be authentic and nurturing. Join support groups, attend workshops, or connect with like-minded individuals who resonate with your journey. Building a community of allies is about creating a network of strength and empathy. These relationships offer fresh perspectives and shared experiences that validate your feelings. Together, you forge connections that become a buffer against adversity. Your tribe becomes a living testament to the healing power of community.

Holo Footwear Is Preparing To Take The Next Big Step
It's been nearly two years since HOLO Footwear made its grand entrance into the basketball space – agreeing to a signature shoe deal with Isaac Okoro – and almost twelve months since they added the fifth overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, Jacy Sheldon, to their roster. Since then, they haven't given the gas pedal any room to breathe. Last month, Sheldon's signature shoe, "The JS:01," in the Bubblegum colorway officially released online at DICK'S Sporting Goods (during WNBA All-Star weekend) and was sold out within 24 hours. DICK's has committed to launching six more colorways of the shoe between now and the end of the year. Sheldon's now former employer (she was traded to the Washington Mystics on Thursday afternoon), the Connecticut Sun, has also partnered with HOLO, making them the team's official footwear sponsor for the 2025 season. And to top things off, HOLO signed viral music artist Michael Minelli (originally from Connecticut) and will be the premier sponsor of his 30 city "With Love" music tour. Minelli recently did the halftime performance at the Sun game and did some content with Sheldon while there (most of this can be found on HOLO's Instagram). With so much recent success, one can't help but wonder how the burgeoning brand could possibly one-up itself. Well, we now have our answer. HOLO Footwear Is Launching Their First Running Shoe Think about all your favorite basketball shoe brands. Nike, Adidas, Under Armor, New Balance. What do they all have in common? They all have their own signature running shoe. Now, it's time for HOLO to enter its name in the race. "We've had so much success of late, and running is such a big part of the space," CEO and Co-Founder of HOLO Footwear, Rommel Vega, said in an exclusive interview with me for Forbes. 'So, we decided we wanted to play in that space. However, we also wanted to ensure that we did so through the lens of our brand. All our athletes train incredibly hard. So, we wanted to create a shoe that looks great and is built for performance." HOLO wants the best of both worlds: function and fashion. But how can they manage to tiptoe this thin line without sacrificing one for the other? Enter, Locol Design and Source – a footwear design and sourcing agency based in London, UK. They've worked with companies like Nike, Converse, Puma, and Adidas, and their Creative Director, Brian Kutsch, went to the same college (College of Creative Science in Detroit, Michigan) as Vega. They specialize in modernizing performance footwear, making them the perfect partner for HOLO in this mission. 'I called Brian up and told him we need a running shoe. We're ready to get into the running space. And he was like, 'What do you want it to be? And how do you want it to be?" And I go, I don't know. You're the design team. You're in London. You know what's trending. You guys are ahead. Just don't F*** this up. That's the brief. That was it," Vega joked. After months of tireless planning and collaboration, the Rebel Runner was born. 'They nailed it," Vega said emphatically. "We're really excited to be working with such a great group of talented designers. For me, especially, it is cool to work with someone I went to college with. It's a full circle moment for both of us." "There are three key parts to the shoe. One is the fit. Then, there's the foot strike management, and lastly, we have the DNA of HOLO," Kutsch explained to me. "We were able to take one of their iconic models and really modernize it to fit into the foot running space." 'It really is built for running, but it is also great for all-day wear," Brian added. He even went as far as to coin it as "the Cadillac of running." Now, it is time for the world to see the masterpiece these two parties have banded together to create. The Rebel Runner is set to launch in five different colorways (seen below) for both men and women in March of 2026. However, the general public will get their first chance to see the shoe in person at the Atlanta Shoe Market this weekend (August 9-11). HOLO will be stationed at booths 5203 and 5205. From there, the next step is to conduct wear testing with collegiate athletes and engage in sponsored community running events, including (potentially) the Grand Rapids River Bank Run. There is still a lot that needs to happen before The Rebel Runner officially debuts in March. But one thing is for certain: if this is anything like what HOLO has done in the last two years, it is destined to be a success.

Is It Tacky To Have A Shower For Baby No. 2?
Having a baby is such an exciting time, every time. The occasion itself brings with it so many other fun experiences: picking out sweet items to decorate the nursery, sharing the news with your friends and family, noodling on a name. One of the biggest milestones in pregnancy is the chance to celebrate your new addition with your closest pals at a baby shower. But is it a faux pas to have a baby shower when you're expecting your second, third, or fourth child? Amy Rainer, a seasoned etiquette teacher, weighs the Expert Amy Rainer has spent nearly 30 years teaching children the basics of proper etiquette through her Birmingham-based Etiquette with Amy Baby Shower Traditions If you grow up in the South, you may not realize just how much our celebratory traditions define everyday life. Take the Southern baby shower. Typically, it's hosted by a circle of women—often close friends of the grandmother-to-be, or of the mother-to-be if it's a younger crowd. They volunteer to throw the shower, coordinate calendars and guest lists, and then send out the invitations. Back in the day, new moms (much like brides) would register at local stores and beloved boutiques, listing out the items they hoped to receive. These days, most turn to digital platforms like Babylist to round up their wish lists all in one place. Attending a baby shower comes with an unspoken agreement: You'll be bringing a gift. Which brings us to the real question—one that many hesitate to ask out loud: Is it tacky to expect people to buy you more than one baby gift over the years? After all, chances are you'll invite the same circle of friends and family to your second (or third) baby shower that you did to your first. Expert Advice "As with every topic," says Rainer, "there are people in both camps." One group believes one baby shower is enough, that you've been properly celebrated (and gifted!) as you're ushered into this new phase of life. Other folks believe that you're free to be showered with both attention and gifts, no matter how many children you have. "Regardless of where one falls, gifting events really boil down to generosity, kindness, and gratitude. The hostesses and guests exhibit excitement and kindness as they welcome the new baby, while the new mother shows a heart of gratitude for the bestowed kindnesses!" says Rainer. Showers, whether baby, engagement, bridal, or otherwise, usually come with a price tag for guests. After RSVPing, most people's first move is to check to see where they can purchase a gift for the honoree. For that reason, it's technically "traditional" to only have a shower with your first child. The Perfect Solution But tradition doesn't have the final word. As years and modernity tend to do, this issue has a perfect workaround. The "sprinkle," a cutesy term meant for a smaller party (not a full-blown "shower," but still something), evolved to address this very problem. Do members of your community want to celebrate alongside your family as you add another member, but you have all the baby gear you could ever need? Fantastic! Shoot for a sprinkle instead, where you get all the sweetness of gathering those who will support you up to and through the growth of your family, but without the inherent "ask" associated with an affirmative RSVP to a shower. Rainer chimes in: "I grew up in the '80s and I remember hearing that you only have a baby shower for the first baby. As time marches on, manners evolve as well, and this may be one of the places where the 'old school rules' don't always need to apply. If someone wants to gather a group of friends to 'sprinkle' a mom of baby number 2 or 3, I'm not sure a 'rule' needs to hold them back from if there's a rule that states 'Baby showers are only appropriate for first babies,' I think there is room for some exceptions. A 'sprinkle' for a new baby is an opportunity for generosity, kindness, and gratitude to be displayed. And, after all, isn't that what is at the heart of all etiquette?" We couldn't have said it better ourselves!Pro Tip If you're invited to a "no gifts" sprinkle and don't want to arrive empty-handed, a treasured children's book is always welcome.
