Chilipad Review: So Cooling, I Turned Down The AC In Triple-Digit Heat
From testing cooling mattresses and bedding to cranking the AC to truly frigid temperatures, I've tried countless ways to escape overheating while I sleep. (I think my husband especially appreciates my method of morphing into a human torpedo and kicking all the blankets off in the night.) So when I started testing the Chilipad by Sleepme, an active cooling system you add to your bed, I was excited—and dare I say, hopeful—to add it to my repertoire of reprieves. In this Chilipad review, I share how it performed after using it for more than two months during the peak of summer. I tested the Chilipad Dock Pro for over two months in the summer heat to see how effective it is. Illustration: Forbes / Photo: Retailer I live in the South, where we've hit triple digits these past few weeks. Add in a healthy dose of humidity and you have the perfect testing environment for a cooling product. Chilipad offers multiple cooling systems; my husband and I tested the Chilipad Dock Pro Bed, which lets you independently customize temperature and scheduling for each side of the bed. Ahead, learn more about how it works, its standout features and its potential drawbacks. Forbes Vetted Forbes Vetted ratings are based on thorough evaluations by our editorial team to help you choose the best products with confidence. Cooling type: Active | Cooling method: Water | Trial: 30 nights | Warranty: 1 year What you'll love: Available in half or whole sizes for one or more sleepers Each partner can control their side of the bed Temperature control ranges from 55 to 115 degrees Fahrenheit No membership fees Keep in mind: It requires distilled water and cleaner for maintenance (not included) Only queen, king and California king sizes are available You can choose a 'me' or 'we' model of the Chilipad Dock Pro, meaning a half size created for just one person that goes on one side of the mattress or a whole size for two people who share a bed. Both options are available for queen, king and California king mattresses. My husband and I ordered the 'we' to see how customizable it truly is for couples. When it arrives, you may feel like there's a lot going on with the different docks, hoses and wires, but it comes together rather simply. You secure the pad on your mattress like you would a protector and weave the hoses through your bed frame. The hoses connect to the dock(s), which then plugs into the wall. You can power the device on and control the temperature using the buttons on the dock, but it's best (and easiest) to download the Sleepme app and control it from your phone. The "we" Chilipad Dock Pro fits like a mattress protector, but with hoses at the bottom. bridget chapman for forbes Along with adjusting the temperature from 55 to 115 degrees Fahrenheit, you can set up a regular schedule for it to automatically turn on and adjust throughout the night or morning if you prefer. Something I also especially appreciate about the Chilipad: It does not require an ongoing paid membership or fees like some other cooling products do. If you're like me and enjoy a clutter-free zone, I'd measure the space beneath your bed frame to make sure it can slide under. At 6.25 inches tall, the docks just barely slide under ours. (It would bother me if I had to keep them out in plain sight, but that may be a personal preference—I don't fully love being able to see them under the bed either, to be honest.) The Chilipad's dock slid snugly under my bed, keeping it out of immediate sight. bridget chapman for forbes The cooling system works by circulating distilled water through microtubes in the pad, and the water's temperature changes to keep you comfortable. You do need to buy the distilled water separately; I found it requires a refill every few weeks, so it's best to keep a jug nearby. With my husband and I using two docks every night, we probably replace the jug itself on a monthly basis. Rapid And Effective Cooling (Or Heating) Relief One lesson I've learned after moving many times over the years is no two thermostats seem to share the same temperature truth. What I mean by that is 66 degrees for one may feel like 70 degrees for another, and hot sleepers know how much each one of those degrees count in the middle of a sweltering night. Because of this, I first set my Chilipad to 64 degrees—and I froze. I found my sweet spot to be 68 to 70 degrees for most of the night with an automatic adjustment to 73 degrees come morning. Meanwhile, my husband likes his even cooler, at 65 degrees, so it takes some playing around with. Whatever your preferred temperature, this system was so effective at cooling my body that I ended up turning down our AC a few times in the middle of the night. I also tested its heating function, cranking it up to the full 115 degrees. The result was a soothing warmth, as if lying on a full-body heating pad or heated massage table. I think it could especially be relaxing and helpful for easing aches, pains or cramps. The second the system kicks on, it starts working, but it takes a few minutes to significantly change degrees. You can slightly feel the water when it initially fills the microtubes within the pad beneath you, and a cooling sensation forms as it drops in temperature, but it's very subtle in terms of the operational feel. I didn't notice the pad itself being there throughout the night and don't think it altered the feel or firmness of our mattress at all. The dock's display shows your bed's current temperature next to what it's working toward. bridget chapman for forbes I compare the sound the dock makes to a very gentle white noise. The brand refers to it as 'whisper-quiet,' a description I agree with. We also sleep with a white noise machine so it didn't impact us at all. Nevertheless, I think most people would be fine with it or would hardly notice it since I had to double-check whether it was still on or not some mornings—but if you need your room to be dead quiet while you sleep, it might be a dealbreaker depending on where you place the dock. Easy To Maintain With Water And Cleaner As mentioned above, you need distilled water to keep it running, but Sleepme suggests you also use the Chilipad cleaner on a monthly basis. Using the cleaner is really easy: You just pour it into the same area where the distilled water goes and you're done. However, you need to purchase the cleaner separately; you can buy it as a 3-, 6- or 12-pack (ranging from $24 to $96 before discounts). The brand also recommends doing a semiannual flush where you disconnect the pad, drain it, then wash it in a cold water on gentle cycle and dry with a medium-temperature setting. You add both the water and cleaner to this corner of the dock (after unlocking and removing the ... More lid). bridget chapman for forbes I always recommend using a mattress protector to keep your mattress safe from spills, dust mites and allergens, but I would especially recommend a waterproof one for extra security if using the Chilipad. (We haven't experienced any issues with leaking or condensation, but again, it never hurts to have one.) Optional AI-Powered Sleep Tracking You can also add a sleep tracker to the Chilipad Dock Pro, which is in the form of another thin but smaller pad that goes under the Chilipad cover where your chest lies. It uses AI to offer live temperature adjustments as well as daily analyses of your REM, deep sleep and light sleep stages. The non-wearable device also tracks your sleeping heart rate variability, resting heart rate, breathing patterns and more in an effort to help improve your sleep quality and knowledge. All the information is stored in the same app you use to operate the Chilipad. It does cost an additional $299 at full retail, though. We haven't tested this component yet and cannot speak to its precision (though no sleep tracker is 100% accurate). Final Thoughts The Chilipad Dock Pro Bed Cooling System has immensely transformed our sleep. Not only do we sleep deeper and better—and have nixed the 3 a.m. blanket-kicking routine—but my husband no longer feels like a human furnace sleeping next to me, and vice versa. It's easy to use, and I love that you can set daily, personalized schedules for each side of the bed. Though I do think there are a lot of mattresses and bedding products that are more 'cooling' than others, there's only so much they can do, since they don't use electronic tech to cool you down. Rather, their materials help regulate your temperature by being breathable, cool to the touch or a heat conductor. They definitely help in my experience and are adequate for many sleepers, but their capabilities are not extreme. The Chilipad, on the other hand, is an active bed system that can truly chill or toast you to your heart's content. There are also smart beds that contain this type of technology, like the Sleep Number ClimateCool, but these options are best if you're looking to commit to a more drastic (and expensive) sleep setup change. I appreciate that adding the Chilipad to your current mattress won't alter its feel or firmness. However, I know the Chilipad Dock Pro is a luxury purchase alone. It also may not be the right product for those looking to avoid having any dock(s) and hoses to store under or around their bed—or if you don't want the regular maintenance of adding distilled water and cleaner. In that case, a cooling blanket or cooling mattress topper may suffice. But for my hot-sleeping husband and me, the Chilipad is beyond worth it. Why Trust Forbes Vetted The Forbes Vetted sleep team consists of experienced editors and writers who've tested hundreds of mattresses and sleep products to help others achieve the best sleep possible. Is The Chilipad Worth It? We think the Chilipad is worth it if temperature is negatively impacting your sleep. It's an effective cooling (and heating) system that can adjust your bed's temperature from 55 to 115 degrees Fahrenheit. It's also easy to use and maintain. What Is The Difference Between Chilipad And Ooler? The Ooler was a cooling system from Sleepme that was discontinued in December 2023 and replaced with the Chilipad Dock Pro. The brand says the Dock Pro offers twice the cooling capacity that the Ooler did, while being quieter and more comfortable. Does Chilipad Require A Subscription? No, Sleepme does not require a subscription or ongoing fee for its Chilipad bed cooling systems.

Too hot to sleep? 7 things that can make you overheat at night
We can all get a bit hot and sweaty during warm summer nights, but sometimes there's more going on in the body causing us to overheat in bed. There is a close connection between body temperature and ability to fall asleep, as your circadian rhythm relies on temperature cues among other things. Our bodies snooze best in cool temperature, which means that sleeping on one of this year's best cooling mattresses can boost your quality of sleep. However, there are several environmental, lifestyle and health factors that disrupt our body's ability to regulate temperature. We've spoken to Dr. Emma Lin, a board-certified Pulmonologist and Sleep Medicine Specialist and Co-Founder of ReadyO2, and Ana Schick, BA, CPT, CHC, Resident Sleep Expert and Health Coach at Sleepme to find out exactly what may be causing us to run hot at night, and what we can do to sleep better in the heat. There are many different reasons why you could (always or occasionally) be sleeping hot, from lifestyle choices to medical conditions and hormonal changes… Schick says hormonal shifts, specifically a drop in estrogen during perimenopause and menopause, can "override your body's built-in thermostat, leading to sudden heat surges known as hot flushes." These can happen at any time of day, but are commonly more intense and frequent at night. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. 'Estrogen has a big role in regulating our cardiovascular system,' which is "heavily involved in what we call thermo regulation – the center of the body that controls our heat," Dr. Sarah Jenkins, who we spoke to for our feature on sleep problems during menopause, explains. "And when we have an estrogen deficiency, we can get hot flushes. Hence, you can wake up really hot in the night, literally soaking the bed sheets with sweat," she adds. Even before perimenopause arrives, women won't be strangers to a sweaty, sleepless night. Changes in hormone levels throughout their menstrual cycle can trigger hot flushes, says Lin. Estrogen levels also drop just before a woman comes on her period. This impacts the hypothalamus, which is responsible for regulating body temperature. The brain becomes more sensitive to temperature changes, leading to increased sweating or feelings of heat during the night. Lin adds that men experience this temperature fluctuation too, if they have low testosterone levels. From sunlight exposure to your exercise routine, what you do during the day has a surprising impact on how well you sleep at night, and your diet is one of the key players here too. In terms of temperature regulation, there are certain foods that raise your body temperature in the metabolism process. Schick says that caffeine (a well-known sleep disruptor) can increase body heat, alongside spicy foods containing capsaicin, which temporarily raises body temperature as it stimulates heat receptors. Also note that the time you eat can impact your sleep. Eating large meals late at night will mean your body is still metabolizing food when you go to bed. Think of your body as a well-fueled machine — its temperature will be raised while working to break down this food, rather than winding down (and cooling down) to sleep. "High-stress levels can trigger cortisol-driven temperature dysregulation," says Schick. When we're stressed, our bodies release more hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, which increase heart rate and blood flow. Ultimately, this leads to an increase in body temperature, fighting against the body's urge to sleep. Hence, it is useful to follow deep breathing exercises at night to help your body calm and cool down before hitting the hay. Having tried them ourselves we recommend moon breathing and the 4 7 8 sleep method. Your bedroom may be lovely and cozy, but is it at the optimal temperature for sleep? You may need to adapt your sleep set-up to accommodate the warmer weather during summer months. It's important to make sure your bedding and sleepwear is breathable, to allow good airflow during the night and to help wick away moisture, preventing you from getting clammy and uncomfortable. You may even need to change up your mattress to help with temperature regulation. As mattresses age, their materials wear down, becoming less breathable and more likely to trap heat. We recommend a top-rated cooling mattress with specialist climate control tech to anyone struggling to beat the heat at night. Schick explains that alcohol can dilate blood vessels, increasing blood flow to the skin and leading to a flushed feeling. A study published in the America Journal of Physiology, which assessed the impact alcohol consumption had on the circadian core temperature of nine healthy men, concludes alcohol consumption increases nocturnal core body temperature by an average of 0.36°C (0.65°F). Hence, you may overheat in bed after a night on the booze. A 2020 study by French researchers also shows alcohol disrupts the natural circadian rhythm and melatonin production alongside thermoregulation mechanisms. Leaving you feeling hot and dysregulated, alcohol consumption often results in poor sleep quality. Alcohol and smoking are often put on par when it comes to compromising health. Similarly to drink, smoking, specifically nicotine, can dysregulate body temperature. A 2021 study of over 600 Lebanese women, 62.5% of which experienced hot flushes, noted a "statistically significant difference [...] between women who experience hot flashes and their counterparts with respect to smoking." Smoking cigarettes can lower estrogen levels, narrow blood vessels and increase heart rate and blood pressure. All of which can alter temperature regulation in the body. Thermoregulation within the body plays a vital role in how well we sleep. Of course, tossing and turning in a sweaty fluster is not conducive to peaceful sleep, but there's more going on inside the body which stops you sleeping when you're hot. Temperature is a key circadian rhythm cue. This means it helps regulate the body's internal biological clock, influencing sleep-wake cycles and hormone release. For sleep-inducing hormones, e.g. melatonin, to be released, your core body temperature needs to drop. Therefore, reducing your temperature in the evening and maintaining a cool sleep space is crucial to getting restorative rest. "Managing hot sleep starts with optimizing your sleep environment, routine, and thermoregulation," says Schick. How do you do this? Here's what she recommends...

What is the Chilipad and how does it differ from a heating and cooling mattress?
Struggling to get to sleep, and stay asleep, because you're too hot? Not only does your body temperature need to drop to regulate the hormones that will help you sleep, but research has shown that heat at night keeps people awake and reduces deep and REM sleep. It's a issue for many — 57% of Americans said they sometimes struggle to sleep due to being too hot — that's only likely to get worse over the warmer months. One option is shopping a top-rated cooling mattress but, if you're looking for a high tech cooling upgrade for your existing mattress, consider the Chilipad Dock Pro bed cooling system at Sleepme It's a mattress pad that is cooled (or heated) by water that flows through it via a control unit, with a smartphone app that allows you to fine tune the climate of your bed. Here, we explore more about the tech, how it works and whether the Chilipad Dock Pro is the right cooling option for you. The Sleepme Chilipad Dock Pro is a hydronic system (that means it uses water as the means of heating and cooling) comprising a EMF-free smart mattress pad, bedside control unit and Sleepme app. In an upgrade from the Chilipad Cube, the Dock Pro uses a membrane (rather than tubing) to circulate temperature controlled water through the mattress pad — which fits over your existing mattress and under your fitted sheet — to cool or warm your sleep surface, and therefore your body, through the night. The pad is designed to absorb heat, and as this warms the circulating water, it returns to the control unit to be cooled again (where the heat being released into the air to stop your bedroom getting too cool). The mattress pad itself has no electrical connections or wires, which means no electromagnetic fields (EMFs) surrounding it, reducing potentially harmful radiation in your sleep space. Additionally, "Airplane mode reduces EMFs from the Dock Pro control unit," according to Sleepme. You can control the temperature of your bed and schedule temperature adjustments through the Sleepme App, or keep your sleep space phone-free by using buttons on the control unit. View the Chilipad at SleepmeThe Chilipad Dock Pro system comes in two different models — the 'me' model covers half the bed, the 'we' model covers both sides direct from Sleepme. With 15% off now, prices start from $1,019.15 for a 'me' half queen and rise to $2,124.15 for a 'we' Cal king. You'll also get a 30-day sleep trial, free shipping and a 1-year warranty. The Chilipad Dock Pro is available in a 'Me' size mattress pad with a hydrolayer membrane that covers half the bed and a 'We' size that covers the whole bed, with sizes from Queen to Cal King. Depending on which size you choose, the Dock Pro can cool one or both sides of the bed to temperatures as low as 55°F and as high as 115°F, offering a temperature solution no matter the time of year. This dual temperature control is a key selling point for the Chilipad. Even with the 'we' option, which covers the full bed, you can adjust the temperature of each side independently, meaning you and your partner needn't bicker over your nighttime temperature preferences. You can control the temperature, schedule changes during the night and set your pad to wake you by gently warming as an alternative to an alarm, all with the free Sleepme app. Or, for an extra fee ($299 $249), you can add Chilipad's non-wearable sleep tracker which uses AI to identify when you'd benefit from a temperature adjustment during the night. In turn, the mattress pad will heat or cool to keep you at an optimal temperature for the best quality sleep (goodbye sweaty tossing and turning). Like the Eight Sleep Pod 4, this sleep tracker will also produce a nightly sleep score and report, offering detailed analysis of your sleep metrics including time spent in each essential sleep stage, heart rate and heart rate variability (HRV). The best mattress toppers for hot sleepers rely on cooling materials like gel-infused foam, copper and breathable fabrics to dissipate heat. While these offer good temperature regulation, they don't actively cool or heat your bed. They simply help wick away excess heat and moisture for a cooler, comfier night's sleep. However, the Chilipad offers that active climate control, meaning it makes temperature adjustments based on your real-time metrics in order to increase deep and REM sleep — if you upgrade with the sleep tracker that is. Otherwise, temperature adjustments are in your hands, though you can schedule them through the night. It essentially does what the best smart beds of the year do in terms of climate control, but at a slightly lower price and minus subscription fees. For reference, a queen size Chilipad 'We' with the sleep tracking upgrade for both sides of the bed is currently a total of $2,367.15 (was $2,797) compared to a queen Eight Sleep Pod 4 at $2,649, which offers dual-sided sleep tracking and temperature regulation, but the subscription fees are a minimum of $199 a year on top. You can also opt for the Chilipad Dock Pro Bundle, which for a queen-sized 'We' includes everything you'd get if you bought the queen 'We' on it's own, plus two sleep trackers, 12 months of system cleaner and an extended protection plan. This is currently $2,528.00 (was $3,238). Specializing in active, dual climate control, the 4.1/5 star-rated (from over 400 reviews) Chilipad Dock Pro could benefit many sleepers, from couples with different temperature needs in bed to people sleeping poorly due to menopause. Many reviewers raved about its cooling abilities, claiming it had eliminated their nightsweats. The Chilipad is a more affordable option offering similar water heating and cooling features to an Eight Sleep Pod for almost $300 less for a queen, and without any additional subscription fees. As a tight-fitting mattress cover, the Eight Sleep Pod feels more like a part of your mattress, whereas the Chilipad is a topper. Chilipad claim that the Dock Pro only takes 20 minutes to install, compared to up to an hour for the Eight Sleep Pod. As it's compatible with any mattresses between 8 and 18 inches, you needn't splash on a new mattress either. And, unlike the Eight Sleep Pod, it's machine washable and dryable, making easy work of your mattress cleaning. Finally, Chilipad say their water-based cooling system is, in general, more energy-efficient than air conditioning units, which is good news for both your wallet and the environment. While the cover is washable, the Chilipad Dock Pro does require regular maintenance too, like water filter refills, which you wouldn't have to do with a standard cooling mattress or mattress topper. While the majority of reviews on the Chilipad site are positive, those who had gave negative feedback noted issues connecting the Dock Pro with their WiFi (and maintaining that connection), and some said that they found it too noisy. While white noise can be helpful for some sleepers, it could keep light sleepers who dislike the noise awake at night. Some customers reported leaking issues with the Chilipad, though the reviewers generally noted the brand had provided replacements or refunds. Anyone keen on decluttering their sleep space should also consider that you must make sure you have bedroom space for the control unit(s). We'd particularly recommend the Chilipad Dock Pro by Sleepme to hot sleepers struggling to beat the heat at night, but who don't want to change their current mattress. With personalized, customizable and automatic (if you upgrade) climate control, it will help you regulate your body temperature at night. However, you must have the $1,000+ budget for this tech-enhanced sleep set, so we recommend you try more affordable methods first to ensure it is a worthy investment for you. Cheaper approaches to cooling your sleep space include keeping your blinds closed through the day, keeping windows open and sleeping with breathable nightwear and bedding.

The Right Way to Wash a Heated Blanket Safely
Nothing matches the feeling of crawling into a warm bed after a long, tiring day, especially if you have an electric heated blanket. These not only provide targeted warmth but are also cost-effective, eliminating the need to heat the entire room. Despite their benefits, electric heated blankets come with some concerns, especially for first-time users. Chief among them: How do you wash one? After all, most electric blanket manufacturers recommend washing the blanket before use. If you've been wondering this, too, you're not alone. Several Reddit users share the same concern, having tried various cleaning hacks and ruining a few blankets along the way. Here's everything you need to know so you can use your heated blanket without worrying. If you're looking for more information about sleep, check out the wellness editors' favorite sleep tips and how to take a nap without ruining your sleep. Can you wash a heated blanket? Generally speaking, yes. Most electric blankets are machine washable and can even be dried in the dryer. But before you go toss yours in the next load of laundry, take a moment to read the blanket's care instructions. Different blankets may have different washing instructions. For example, Sunbeam, a blanket manufacturer, recommends presoaking the blanket and then washing it in cold water and mild soap on delicate for two minutes. Another blanket maker, Sleepme, makes electric blankets with weighted inserts. They recommend removing the insert, then washing only the outer cover on a gentle cycle. Materials you'll need to wash your heated blanket Depending on the care instructions, here are some things you may need to wash your electric blanket. Washer Dryer or drying rack/clothesline Laundry detergent Clean cloths (if needed for stain treating) How to wash an electric blanket Washing a heated blanket isn't difficult, but there are usually some things you'll need to do to prepare the blanket for the washing machine. Here are step-by-step instructions to follow. 1. Remove the cords The electric blankets cords are what allow the electricity to travel from the outlet into the blanket. Electrical cords should not be submerged in water. Damaging the cords could cause the blanket to malfunction or stop working entirely. It's best to remove all connected cords to ensure the blanket isn't damaged. 2. Review the blanket's washing instructions Somewhere on the blanket or in the information that came with it, there will be washing and drying instructions. They will usually indicate if the blanket can be machine washed or should be hand washed, what washing machine cycle to use, how to dry and even sometimes soap specifications. It's important to read these before laundering the blanket. If the washing instructions indicate that the blanket must be hand washed, skip ahead to step four. 3. Run on a delicate cycle Most electric blankets should be washed on a delicate or gentle cycle. This helps to eliminate dislodging or damaging the wiring inside the blanket. 4. Wash by hand Though most heated blankets can be washed in a washing machine, there may be some that must be hand washed. In that case, remove the cords, and fill your washing tub with cold water and gentle detergent. After you've soaked the blanket for a bit, use your hands to wash the blanket, similar to how a washing machine agitates. When you're satisfied with the amount of washing done, drain and refill the tub with water to rinse the blanket. Do this until all soap is gone from the blanket. Squeeze excess water out and either lay flat to dry or dry in the machine on low if the care instructions indicate you can do so. 5. Dry the heated blanket Most electric blankets can be tumble dried on low in the dryer. Be sure to dry your blanket according to the instructions provided by the manufacturer. If the blanket must be air-dried, try laying it between two towels to soak up excess water and then lay or hang it flat to dry. You might be tempted to wring out excess water by twisting the blanket, but do not do this as it may cause damage to the internal often should you wash a heated blanket? How often you should wash your electric blanket depends on how much the blanket is used. As a general rule, you should wash the blanket when you think it needs it. You may need to wash it infrequently if it is on a bed that doesn't often get used, or if you're a nightly user, you might prefer to get in a routine of washing the blanket each time you wash your other bedding. If you plan to pack away the blanket, wash it before putting it in storage. When you shouldn't wash a heated blanket Do not wash a heated blanket that still has any cords attached. Additionally, if the blanket's care instructions suggest hand washing instead of machine washing, do not wash the blanket in the washing machine. How to get rid of stains on a heated blanket If you use your electric blanket a lot, it's inevitable that, eventually, you'll need to treat a stain or two. In most cases, a regular washing process will do, but when it won't, try mixing some laundry detergent and warm water and pretreating. Using a clean cloth, apply the soapy water mixture to the stain. You can either leave that setting and then wash the blanket following its care instructions or rinse the stain-treated area with another damp cloth and then air dry.
