SINGAPORE : Malaysia has been an energetic and effective Asean chair, says Singapore's prime minister, Lawrence Wong.
Wong, who is in Malaysia until Tuesday for the 46th Asean Summit and related summits, said Singapore will continue to work closely with Malaysia to advance Asean integration efforts.
'Caught up with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on the sidelines of the Asean Summit. I congratulated him on chairing a successful summit,' he posted on Facebook.
Both leaders also took stock of various bilateral issues, he said.
Wong said he looked forward to welcoming Anwar to Singapore later this week at the Shangri-La Dialogue, Asia's premier defence summit.
Anwar is scheduled to deliver a special address at the dialogue, which will be held from May 30 to June 1.
In a separate post, Wong said he had a fruitful meeting with Indonesian president Prabowo Subianto on the sidelines of the summit.
He said they discussed global and regional developments as well as the importance of a strong and united Asean in these turbulent times.
'We also look forward to closer bilateral cooperation. The longstanding relationship between Singapore and Indonesia has served as an anchor of stability against geopolitical headwinds,' he said.
Separately, Prabowo emphasised the need for Asean to become a stronger and more united regional bloc in facing global uncertainties, calling on all member states to strengthen regional cooperation.
'Asean must be stronger, more solid. The situation is uncertain, so we must work together more effectively,' he said.

AGC to seek contempt proceedings against Shafee for ‘Nazi-Germany' court remark

PETALING JAYA, May 30 — The Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) has announced plans to initiate contempt of court proceedings against Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah over his controversial remark likening court proceedings to a 'Nazi-Germany kind of hearing.' In a statement, the AGC said Shafee's comment, made in reference to an ongoing case, constituted a 'serious and unnecessary attack' on the judiciary. 'While lawyers have the right to challenge judicial decisions through legal channels, public statements that undermine the courts or erode public confidence in the justice system are unacceptable,' it said. The AGC said it would proceed with contempt of court applications to uphold the rule of law, protect the integrity of the judiciary, and safeguard the courts from baseless accusations and undue public pressure. Shafee, who represents former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, reportedly made the remark in response to a court order temporarily suspending proceedings linked to Najib's judicial review to enforce a royal decree for house arrest. Yesterday, Malaysiakini quoted Shafee comparing the court's decision to a 'Nazi-Germany kind of hearing.' In a follow-up statement today, Shafee clarified that his remark was meant to educate the public during an exchange with a reporter, rather than to disparage the judiciary. He said the comment was intended to explain the concept and essence of a 'judicial decision.' Najib had earlier been granted leave by the Court of Appeal to initiate judicial review proceedings to serve the remainder of his jail sentence under house arrest. However, these proceedings are on hold pending the Federal Court's decision on an appeal by the Attorney-General. In February last year, the Federal Territories Pardons Board announced that Najib's prison sentence for the SRC International case had been reduced from 12 years to six, with his fine lowered from RM210 million to RM50 million. The AGC's move comes amid ongoing scrutiny of public commentary related to judicial matters, reinforcing its stance on preserving confidence in Malaysia's legal system.

Kelantan govt seals rare earths pact with Lynas

Lynas Rare Earths CEO and managing director Amanda Lacaze said Malaysia is already recognised as a rare earths centre of excellence through Lynas's operations. (AP pic) PETALING JAYA : The Kelantan government's investment arm has struck an agreement with Australia's Lynas Rare Earths Ltd to develop the state's rare earth resources that are essential for high-tech industries. The Australian mining company said today it has signed a memorandum of understanding with the state's Menteri Besar Inc (MB Inc) that provides a framework to negotiate a deal for the future supply of mixed rare-earths carbonate feedstock to Lynas. Under the non-binding agreement, the parties will cooperate on the growth of the rare earths industry in Kelantan and work towards developing Malaysia's locally sourced and separated rare earth products. 'Malaysia's ionic clay deposits have excellent potential as future feedstock for Lynas Malaysia, particularly given their high proportion of heavy rare earths which are in demand for future facing technologies including electric vehicles and electronics,' Lynas CEO Amanda Lacaze said in a statement. She said this initiative brings together Lynas Malaysia's expertise on the rare earths industry spanning more than a decade and Kelantan's rare earth resources. 'We look forward to working with MB Inc to ensure the (rare earths) it produces meets the high environmental and technical standards required by Lynas and our customers in Malaysia as well as global manufacturing supply chains,' she added. Lynas has been operating a processing plant on the outskirts of Kuantan, Pahang, since 2012. The miner currently sources all of its rare earths from the Mt Weld mine in Western Australia. The Kelantan land and minerals office previously stated that rare earth elements have been found in large quantities in Jeli and Gua Musang. Last December, the department said it deployed drones to monitor remote locations identified as having rare earth elements to prevent illegal mining activities. News reports then indicated police had arrested 55 individuals after uncovering an illegal rare earth mining operation in Gua Musang. Meanwhile, the federal government is encouraging state administrations to allow rare earth mining. Outgoing natural resources and environmental sustainability minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad was reported to have said Malaysia aims to position itself as a regional hub for rare earth mining and processing. 'Lynas's plant in Malaysia is the first plant outside China that can process heavy rare earth elements,' he said during a visit to the Lynas plant earlier this month. He added this achievement increased the nation's competitiveness in the rare earth elements market. Rare earths and geopolitics Geopolitical tension is fuelling interest in finding new sources of rare earths supply. After the US slapped ultra-high reciprocal tariffs on China last month, the Asian giant retaliated by tightening restrictions on the export of rare-earth materials, targeting US manufacturers, including Tesla. With the Trump administration now having a truce with China over its tariffs, exports of rare earths restarted this month for some companies. China remains in the driving seat as it currently refines almost all of the world's heavy rare earth elements, including dysprosium and terbium. Lynas has been seeking to break that stranglehold, and recently began commissioning a new separation circuit that will make it the only commercial producer of separated heavy rare earth products outside of China. Ironically, the opposition-controlled state of Kelantan may turn out to be a starting point in helping the US and its allies break China's virtual monopoly in rare earth elements.

Bursa ends on weak note amid subdued regional sentiment

KUALA LUMPUR : Bursa Malaysia failed to sustain earlier gains and ended the week on a weaker note, weighed down by continued selling pressure in heavyweight and midcap stocks amid downbeat regional sentiment. Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng said regional markets slipped after US Treasury secretary Scott Bessent announced that trade talks with China had hit a standstill, reducing confidence in a long-term reduction in tariffs. 'Investors are closely monitoring the situation, as further developments in US-China trade relations could significantly impact global markets. 'We believe that geopolitical tensions and economic data offer little reassurance, Asian markets may remain volatile in the near term,' he told Bernama. Meanwhile, UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd head of investment research Sedek Jantan noted that despite a firmer overnight lead from Wall Street, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) failed to sustain its early gains, weighed down by continued foreign fund outflows and persistent macroeconomic and political uncertainties. 'The index has now erased much of its earlier momentum, sending the one-month return to (-2%) and hovering just above the key psychological threshold of 1,500. 'As of yesterday, foreign investors had extended their net selling streak to 10 consecutive sessions,' he added. He said investor sentiment remains cautious as markets weigh recent changes in ministerial leadership and the potential for adjustments in the Cabinet, with attention focussed on policy continuity and Malaysia's broader economic direction. On the global front, Sedek said uncertainty surrounding US trade policy continues to cloud market visibility. He said a US appeals court has stayed a prior ruling that had blocked President Donald Trump's use of reciprocal tariffs under the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act, raising fresh questions about the future direction of US trade enforcement. 'While the legal process unfolds, businesses and markets are left navigating a more complex and uncertain global trade landscape,' he added. At 5pm, the FBM KLCI slipped 10.63 points, or 0.70% to 1,508.35 from yesterday's close of 1,518.98.
